  • In its own valley just over seven miles from the town of Guildford
  • Direct access to a footpath leading into the forest and a bridleway
Shut yourself away at Lockhurst Hatch Farm for as long as you can manage: the key features of this place are a spectacular setting in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, plus a snug berth to cuddle up in after days of hiking, biking and horse riding. Sitting high on a hill, units at this peaceful spot come with splendid Surrey Hills views as standard and are in prime position for getting outdoors. There’s direct entry to a bridleway from the park as well as a footpath leading to the forest, and other hikes around places like Blackheath, Albury Heath and Farley Heath are all within easy reach. The grounds are also accessible to guests for walks: the farm is set over 30 acres of pasture and woodland in its own valley, down a country lane surrounded by fields, forest and heathland. If you're up for roaming, ask on site for details on where’s best to stroll and cycle among the fields dotted with Lockhurst’s Portland and Jacob sheep. For supplies and town days, the centre of Guildford is just over seven miles away; pick up ingredients for the barbecue from the shops here – grilling out in the open air is permitted back on site. The park also has toilet and shower facilities as well as a washing-up area.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Gill the host was fabulous, emailed at time of booking and again closer to the stay. Very helpful with any questions I had. On arrival Gill was there to greet us and to walk us to the hut. The hut was very secluded and not on a site with other campers which I loved. A short walk past a cute little lamb that was living with some chickens, across a field uphill. The outdoor shower is very quirky I loved that. There is a firepit out side and logs for seating around it. In the hut there was lots of games and a book of local walks. The hut is very quaint. Wood burner inside is very effective. Loved everything about it. The power supply is solar so maybe pack a powerbank just in case. The views are beautiful. Breakfast is meats cheeses yogurts etc which Gill delivers every morning and leaves outside. We enjoyed every minute and was very sad to leave.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Loved the beautiful secluded location. Really felt im nature and with the back to basics feeling with boiling and cooking on a campfire and the outdoor shower, felt completely refreshed. The hut was amazingly insulated and the bed was really cosy and comfy. The walks around the hills start from the front door of the hut and you can visit some lovely pubs in the nearby villages of Little London and Shere. Gill our host was very welcoming and provided us with a delicious breakfast every morning to our door and told us about the different walks we could do in the local area

Route directions

From Guildford take the A25 Guildford to Dorking road. After approximately 5 miles (opposite Silent Pool), turn right onto the A248 towards Albury. After 1/3 mile, turn left up New Road to Farley Green. Pass over the level crossing and continue up the hill to Farley Green. Turn left at village green into Shophouse Lane. Pass a cul-de-sac, Kingsfield, on your left, then take the next turning left into Lockhurst Hatch Lane, signposted Lockhurst Hatch, Ponds Lane and Row Lane. Drive down the lane. After 1/4 mile at the bottom of the hill, the lane bends left and the drive to Lockhurst Hatch Farm is on the right. You will see the house and a barn of hay from the lane. Don’t take either of the two sandy tracks on the right that you'll pass as you drive down Lockhurst Hatch Lane: these lead to other houses.

Local attractions

Going into Guildford? Make sure to factor in some time for checking out the medieval Guildford Castle, with its manicured gardens and views from the square tower, as well as the intriguing exhibits on display in the gallery at the 17th-century Guildford House. Satisfying strolls start from this maket town too: a circular walk beginning at the Cornmarket Portico, just off the high street, leads up to Shalford Water Meadows; another suggested path is along the Wey River from Dapdune Wharf to St Catherine’s Hill with stunning views to be had enroute. Just outside town, have a gander at the art in Watts Gallery - Artists’ Village, which displays Victorian paintings and sculptures, or mosey about the walled garden in the grounds of lovely Loseley Park, a 16th-century stately home. Can’t get enough of aristocratic abodes? The National Trust has taken over a whole heap of historical houses hereabouts, including Clandon Park and Hatchlands Park (15 minutes away), as well as Leith Hill Place and Polesden Lacey (both within 30 minutes).
