  • Off-grid family campsite and fishery 15 minutes’ drive from Doncaster
  • Yorkshire Sculpture Park 45 minutes’ drive; Royal Armouries 50 minutes
  • Wildlife haven with fishing lakes, a sauna and communal kitchen
Like the sound of combining a fishing holiday with a stay at a wildlife haven? That’s exactly what you can do at Willow Garth Country Park and Fishery, 15 minutes’ drive from all the modern-day conveniences of Doncaster. Surrounded by farmland, this long-established South Yorkshire retreat has abundant wildlife, myriad birds on three woodland lakes and a private fishery well-stocked with carp, tench and perch. Whether you come to fish or simply sit by the waterside to contemplate the peace and calm of nature is – of course – entirely up to you. Either way, you can take long walks – with any accompanying dogs – straight from your pitch, grill up a barbecue on communal firepits or cook up a feast in the outdoor kitchen. And on clear nights, you may well see spectacular sunsets over the lakes. This being an ecologically sound, off-grid sort of place, there is no electricity available, but there is a simple wooden sauna among the trees, and a chill-out zone with hammock and sun loungers outside reception.

Non-electric forest floor tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great back to nature place. Glenn, the owner, is very friendly. We even had our own firepit, bought wood onsite and enjoy watching baby swans and ducks. Our children even had a go at fishing thanks to Glenn and Billy, our young fishing instructor. As for the facilities, bring drinking water with you. It's a simple, but tranquil place.

Disliked: There is a train line next to the site and during the afternoon on Saturday it seemed busy. But no trains over night and early morning.

Non-electric forest floor motorhome pitch

Liked: Liked The peace and quiet there is a railway runs close by but you hardly notice it after a while, we booked 2 days just to try out our new motorhome and were the only guests on site. The site its self is very basic but we had all we needed in the motor home so that didn't matter, Glen was very helpful and friendly and I'm sure we will be back again soon with the grandchildren. There is fishing on site and the water is very well kept with plenty if fish to the three pond, plenty of wild life to see and very quiet at night. Might not be everyone's choice but we will return again soon, if you need any supply's the local shop is just a short walk away its a small village and the shop stores everything you might need to keep you going everyone is so friendly. While we were staying a group of young boys came to fish and they seemed to enjoy ever moment they were on site. Not sure about WIFI we didn't even try as it was a get away couple of days.

Disliked: Its a little uneven but we managed well

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We have worked hard and now improved the layout and land evenness.

Liked: I’m a full time carer for 2 disabled children and desperately needed a break. I decided to book willow Garth camping for a weekend. It didn’t feel like I was in Doncaster at all. Loved the site and will be returning again for a mini break.

Local attractions

Looking for gentle family strolls? Situated on a former colliery, Bentley Community Woodland (five minutes’ drive) provides a splash of green among the suburbs of Doncaster, with woodland walks and cycling trails around the reservoir. There are more peaceful hikes to be had at Thorpe Marsh Nature Reserve, or you can meander around the manicured grounds at Georgian-era Cusworth Hall Museum and Park (both 10 minutes). If the kids are getting restless, take them to jump around at Go Bounce Extreme Trampoline Park (15 minutes), or go extreme on the endurance trails at Uncle Eddies Motocross Park (five minutes). When quieter sports are called for, there are several golf courses within 20 minutes’ drive, and if you’d rather someone else put in all the effort, Doncaster Racecourse (15 minutes) has a year-round schedule of racing. There are several big-hitting attractions nearby too: have a potter around the ever-changing outdoor installations at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (45 minutes), or admire vast collections of armour and watch jousting sessions at the Royal Armouries (50 minutes). A little further afield, you can visit the museums and minster in York, or The Deep aquarium in Hull (both around an hour).
