The High Hermitage Holiday Park: Large gravel pitches

General

  • Quiet countryside park among ancient woodland
  • Tyne fishing available nearby: permits at reception
  • Wildlife haven a short walk from the village of Ovingham

Customer service is the name of the game at The High Hermitage Holiday Park, a peaceful place in the Northumberland countryside where staff are always on hand to deal with queries or concerns, and to keep the amenities up to high standards.

The landscape includes ancient woodland and the site's own stream, Kitty's Burn, all in a wildlife haven a short walk from the village of Ovingham via a few friendly local pubs. Many guests use the park as a base for the Northumberland coast; other famed destinations like Hadrian's Wall and Alnwick Castle are within easy reach.

The High Hermitage is less than a mile from Prudhoe railway station, where you can access trains to Newcastle, Carlisle, Hexham and Glasgow.

Fishing is available on site; pick up a permit at reception.

The site warden was great, friendly and very helpful and the fully serviced pitch was perfect. The site is clean and tidy and very peaceful

    Disliked:

The facilities are very poor, one toilet and one shower for the men and two toilets and one shower for women. Both facilities if not replaced need a full refurbishment as they are old , dated and shabby!

Man who met us on site was lovely, big spacious pitch

    Disliked:

Ground was not good for tent pegs, very hard underneath with rocks ect. Toilets were not cleaned at the weekend, shower was dirty and soap was not refilled, they only mopped the floor. Bins need to be in a place where everyone can see them, we had to walk around the site 3 times before we found them.

Well kept quiet rural site located within walking distance of a local village and train station for access to Newcastle.
Well spaced out pitches and the hard standing pitches are first class.
    Warden was first class.

    Disliked:

The grass pitch area is in need of some work to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the site.
    Toilet block could be updated.

Super friendly welcome, great location near the station and village. The hard standing serviced pitches looked really good

    Disliked:

We are seasoned caravanners and stay a lot on caravan club certified sites. I would say the facilities, working site with building materials knocking about, etc are very similar to those sorts of sites. The difference is that they are typically about £20 a night. There's nothing wrong with this site at all but I think the pricing is slightly out - that being said there isn't much competition around so I'll probably be back.

The warden was super helpful and jolly, the site was clean as were the toilet block and shower. small site at the current time with improvements in the planning for the toilets and shower block that currently are similar to those we used at school, but very clean. great location with two pub within a mile of walking but be sure to take your torch for the way home when dark. Great stay overnight for our trip home from Scotland.

    Disliked:

Only 4 stars for facilities as shower block needs updating but no complaints.

Very friendly welcome, we were allowed on site early as we had travelled quite a way. The warden, Gordon, could not do enough to ensure we were settled in and had everything we needed. Good size pitches and a very quiet site with all other occupants a good distance apart.

    Disliked:

Facilities were a little spartan with only one shower and toilet to be used by at least 20 units. No mop or squegee to clean out after use so the floor just got wetter and wetter and the steps down to the facilities left a lot to be desired especially in the dark.

The nearby town of Prudhoe, about 11 miles from the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, has a Norman castle and a waterpark as well as access to the old Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, now the Tyne Valley Line and still running regularly between the two cities.

If you're anywhere around this part of England, a must-see is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall, the most visited destination in the north of England, running for about 73 miles across the north of England from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend, across the North Pennines, and along Northumberland National Park.

The wall has several Roman sites along its length, including Housesteads Roman fort, the most complete Roman fort in Britain; eight forts and live excavations at the Roman Army Museum and Roman Vindolanda, and Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths and Museum.

Paintball, quad biking, go karting, offroad 4x4 driving and a Go Ape! are all available locally. A shopping centre is 20 minutes away.
