  • Peaceful, simple grass pitches just outside the hamlet of Aldfield
  • Ripon and Lightwater Valley Theme Park within 20 minutes' drive
  • Walk across open fields to Fountains Abbey in 10 minutes
What a cracking location this is for those heading out on North Yorkshire walks: Through The Kissing Gate is just on the edge of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the Yorkshire Dales National Park beyond – and it’s a mere 10-minute walk across open fields to the splendid Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden, where there are abbey ruins, ducks by the pond and tearooms for a brew or ice cream. Not that it’s all about the hikes: there’s plenty more to explore around here, including Lightwater Valley Theme Park (15 minutes’ drive) and the town of Ripon – less than 10 minutes’ drive away but also easily accessed on foot, by bike or by bus from the village of Aldfield, a couple of minutes’ walk away (particularly handy if you’re planning to spend time in one of the town’s bars or restaurants…) The peaceful pitches back at base are in an open field, with views up to How Hill on a fine day. There’s plenty of space to play games and set up picnics for long, lazy evenings with the family (and that includes the dog, who's welcome to join you here). A cold-water washing-up area is provided, as is access to a portable toilet; for the brave types, there’s also a small outdoor shower area where you can bring along your own water and enjoy an alfresco freshen-up.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Really liked the barn set up and small touches.

Disliked: The porta loos were not functioning properly, the water for the sinks were not enough to wash hands thoroughly. There was also no toilet roll in any of the toilets (we do keep spare normally but didn’t this time).

From the manager: Thankyou for the review. We do keep the toilets very well stocked, however we are sorry if it had run out on this occasion. We hope you will visit us again! and hopefully you have spare just in case!.

Local attractions

A day out in Ripon (10 minutes’ drive) could look different depending on what sort of thing you enjoy… there’s the racecourse for race days (and another in Thirsk, 25 minutes’ drive away), the cathedral for some awesome architecture or the police and workhouse museums for those of you who fancy playing the role of a Victorian judge, constable or schoolteacher for a little while. Kids with you? Lightwater Valley Theme Park (15 minutes) is all about rides for under 12s, so the smaller ones in your group will be well tended to. Playtime is maze-style at The Forbidden Corner (40 minutes) instead - the four-acre garden is made up of tunnels, follies and other challenges for children. There’s a peaceful place or two around here, that's for sure, whether that's a cruise down the river at Newby Hall & Gardens (15 minutes), shopping down the Shambles in York (45 minutes) or wandering around the Victorian spa town of Harrogate (25 minutes). For more of the old stuff, there are guided geology walks around the cool rock formations at Brimham Rocks (10 minutes) or archery, canoeing or bushcraft in the grounds of the 14th-century Ripley Castle (15 minutes).
