General

  • Well-stocked fishing lake covering five acres
  • Bordered by the River Nene
  • On the edge of the village of Yarwell

Now this is fishing on a grand scale…There’ll be no angling for a good spot at Yarwell Mill Country Park bordered by the serene River Nene: the well-stocked fishing lake here covers five acres, so you're sure to find a solitary spot in which to settle down.

Or just sit dreamily over a book if that's your bag instead: the park is set in calm Cambridgeshire countryside and will have those looking for a relaxing holiday hooked line and sinker.

Facilities here are hassle-free: clean showers and loos which are well lit at night, a washing up area and a shop selling essentials. The village of Yarwell is on the edge of the park for real ale and pub grub at The Angel Inn, while if you need to stock up on any fishy essentials, the fishing tackle shop Sheltons is in Peterborough 20 minutes’ drive away.

In the ende we couldn't camp for many famili reasons, especially that we're afraid of one of our children getting into the lake without us being aware, she's at that stage. Anyways, the staff of the camping site hava offered to keep the booking fee for one year in case we decide to attend later, a gesture we appreciate.

The water, river lake and pond.

    Disliked:

Our site and the site next door was covered in dog poo. Hoped that they did not think it was our puppies as we clear up religiously after them. The site had also been cut so obviously not checked at all. Not particularly friendly people at reception and lots of Do Not signs everywhere. A nice toilet shower and rubbish block at the centre of the site, but needed more as too far away.

Local attractions

Bring your boots: the countryside surrounding Yarwell Mill and Yarwell village is packed with scenic walks and sleepy villages to explore including Wansford and Nassington, and the historic town of Stamford is just six miles away with its timber-framed buildings, medieval churches and 17th- and 18th-century stone buildings to point the camera at.

The 117-mile Nene Way passes through Peterborough and also takes in the ancient market town of Oundle 12 miles to the south-west; the Sulehay Nature Reserve, covering walks around the ancient forest of Sulehay, the Stonepit Quarry and the woods and fields of Ring Haw is just to the west of Yarwell (there’s some parking at the entrance to the forest on the Wansford to Yarwell road).

For resting your feet, jump onto the Nene Valley Steam Railway, which has been puffing along since 1845 and which runs for seven and a half miles along the river; join it at Wansford for the girder bridge trip across the Nene or go loco and book a Driver Experience.

Then track along to the historic village of Fotheringhay, said by a historian to have ‘been distinguished beyond any other place in Britain, except the Capital, by the aggravated misfortunes of Royalty’; Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabethan Elizabeth are just two blue-blooded types associated with the village, although Liz was slightly luckier in that she wasn’t executed at Fotheringhay Castle.

Elizabethan enthusiasts can also browse around Burghley House, finished in 1587 and with 35 major rooms, over 80 lesser rooms and halls and regular events including food markets, art and music courses and something called the World Record for the Number of Fairies in One Place in August 2012. Each to their own…

You can potter in and around Peterborough too for heaps of historical highlights: there’s seventeenth century Elton Hall, the medieval manor house Longthorpe Hall and the Grade I listed Thorpe Hall. Or, you could decide to be thoroughly contrary and modern and book a skydive at Peterborough’s Sibson Airfield.

Must see

  • Burghley House (5.7 miles)
  • Peterborough Cathedral (7.4 miles)
  • Barnsdale Gardens (13.0 miles)

National Trust

  • Lyveden New Bield (9.3 miles)
  • Woolsthorpe Manor (19.2 miles)
