General

  • Family-run site in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Steps away from the beach
  • Pool, sauna and summer restaurant/entertainment

Views, glorious views… the area surrounding St Audries Bay Holiday Club near Minehead is the setting for right Somerset sights. The park is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the foot of the Quantock Hills, it's close to the beach on the Somerset coast and has views across the Bristol Channel to Wales: bring your camera.

St Audries Bay has been family-owned and run since 1933 and has picked up a goodly handful of awards along the way, so it’s safe to assume they know what to lay on for guests of all ages whatever the weather: among the options on offer are tennis, boules, fishing, an adventure playground, a pool with sauna (a small extra charge applies for the sauna), and a games room with video games, snooker and pool tables.

Entertainment is laid on during July and August, and restaurant and bar meals, takeaways and tipples are available during these months in the Sundowner bar. Or head off site instead: once you’ve hiked the Quantock Hills, both Bridgwater and Taunton are on the M5 15 miles away and Exmoor National Park is nearby.

Gold David Bellamy Conservation Award

Please note

The indoor swimming pool is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Outside July and August, the bar and restaurant are open at certain times only: please ask for details on arrival.

The park was lovely, shame about the weather (lol), everything was clean, the pitch was nice and level and big enough for our two tents and car with room to spare, everyone was friendly and helpful, nice and secure site as we had to leave all our things in one tent while my husband went home (90 minute drive) to collect the poles for the second tent which he forgot, the beach was gorgeous with several beautiful waterfalls. I especially loved how the pool was sustainably heated via a wood chip burner with the wood coming from local forests. The only downside for me was that nothing opened until 9/10 AM, we were up early both mornings and there was nothing to do and nowhere to get a hot drink as our gas burner couldn't cope with the wet weather. Would be ideal to put a coffee machine on site somewhere that could be accessed at all times. Other than that, it was brilliant and we are hoping to go back next summer, for a week probably.

    Disliked:

Not much to dislike really, it was lovely.

Cleanliness, friendliness, great clubhouse and opportunities for young children. Pool was fantastic, clean and warm. Very nice toilet/shower block. Not over taken by too many children. Great area to go touring.

    Disliked:

Beach area not great for longer than a few mins. Very pebbly, not good for smaller children although the 30mins we spent there we made fun.

We loved pretty much everything about this site, the beautiful views which made me wish I had a better camera to capture them, the large flat pitches which were close to the lovely clean shower & toilet block and the indoor heated swimming pool was fantastic. It was a short walk down to the beach for an evening stroll, although you have to watch the clay-type bits when the tide is out! The bar and restaurant area is very nice too, and the evening view from the Sundowner bar is absolutely beautiful! The staff were all very friendly too.

Local attractions

Pick up a safari tour at Dulverton or Dunster to see Exmoor’s wildlife in sit-down style, or take to your feet or wheels to explore the park’s walking and biking routes. Going there by night? Exmoor National Park is the first designated International Dark Sky Reserve in Europe: watch the stars at Haddon Hill or Wimbleball Lake, the first designated Dark Skies Discovery Site on Exmoor.

The country park at Wimbleball is worth hanging around for a day or two too: it’s managed by the South West Lakes Trust and has an activity centre, trout fishery, bike route and nine-mile lake walk.

Minehead nine miles away from St Audries Bay has a couple of record breakers: it’s the starting point of Britain’s longest walking trail, the South West Coast Path, and it has the country’s longest standard-gauge heritage railway, West Somerset Railway, starting at its station and running just over 20 miles to Bishops Lydeard.

Weston-super-Mare is also within easy driving distance and has miles of clean beaches, a refurbished pier, a SeaQuarium, more donkeys and Britain’s only helicopter museum: give it a whirl.

There are several other Somerset essentials to see within driving distance: cider farms at Taunton and Washford, two vineyards at Bridgwater, the Blackdown Hills to hike after the Quantocks, and famous Glastonbury and its abbey about 40 minutes’ drive away.

Must see

  • Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (18.2 miles)
  • Millennium Stadium (21.1 miles)
  • The Cardiff Story (opens April 1st 2011) (21.2 miles)

National Trust
