  • Scenic site on a friendly family-run farm with easy access from A30
  • On the edge of Dartmoor National Park; 45 minutes' drive to the coast
  • Farm-reared meat products and local apple juice available to buy
Dartmoor National Park on your doorstep and pretty much halfway between Devon’s two gorgeous coastlines – Lovaton Farm Camping is certainly in an excellent spot for getting out to explore this fabulous part of the world (and it’s easily accessed from the A30 as well, to make life even easier…) This small, family-friendly site is up on the northern edge of the national park, a couple of miles from the village of South Tawton and 15 minutes’ drive from Okehampton. Outdoor enthusiasts should be well served here: there are plenty of places nearby for long walks, and it’s easy for cyclists to get out on the Granite Way and Wray Valley Trail (both traffic-free bike paths along disused railway lines). Cool off with a paddle in a nearby stream or head for one of Devon’s fab beaches for a swim or some surfing – both coasts are about 45 minutes’ drive away. The setup here is a simple back-to-basics affair, but guests will have access to a toilet and a shower and there's a firepit available to hire (permitted only when weather conditions allow). There's running water on site but it's not suitable for drinking so bottled water is also available. The food is pretty top-notch though: for breakfasts and barbecues (permitted only when weather conditions allow), farm-produced sausages, bacon, burgers and apple juice are available to buy on request. For any other bits you may require, there are a couple of supermarkets in Okehampton. Not in the mood to cook? There are a couple of excellent pubs nearby, with the nearest being a mile and half away in Whiddon Down.

Local attractions

Out for a walk or a bike path? The Tarka Trail can be picked up in Sticklepath (10 minutes’ drive) for a traffic-free outing all the way up to the north coast if you’ve got the legs for it. Bit far? Take yourselves for a stroll around Fernworthy Reservoir (20 minutes) instead or choose a Dartmoor route that takes in top spots like Lydford Gorge (25 minutes) or Haytor Vale (half an hour). Of course, there’s always the option of a stroll on the South West Coast Path too – or a day at the beach? Head south to Torquay (45 minutes) for a classic English Riviera resort with a sheltered beach and a selection of seafood restaurants, or turn north to Bude (50 minutes) for a day of surfing (or surf lessons, if you need a hand with the technique). Closer to base, both Okehampton Castle and Castle Drogo are worth a visit, as is the Moretonhampstead Motor Museum with its collection of over 150 historic vehicles – all are 15 minutes’ drive away. A leisurely ride on the Dartmoor Railway (20 minutes) is a great way to see some scenery too.

Liked: There is nothing to like here just a terrible location

Disliked: The site is right by the A30 so super noisy and there is no running drinking water only an inadequate box of bottled water provided by the owners! There is only one composting toilet and one shower, one outside wash basin and NO washing up facilities. Expensive for something so useless and felt like we had been completely ripped off. Suffice to say DO NOT STAY HERE it's awful.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback , I am so sorry that you felt compelled to leave such a poor review. It does say on the description that it is a basic site and in the features it says it has a compost toilet and a shower, it is a small site but though small it is kept clean and tidy. Regards to drinking water, I have a cool box with large bottles of free water ,chilled during the heatwave and constantly topped up. I also fill containers for those who ask, from our house, along with ice packs. There was a list of contact numbers in the shower block ,so I can be contacted at anytime if there is a problem. Regards to the A30, it was Bank Holiday weekend, so it was busier than usual . Once again I am so sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. I am normally up at the site to see how everyone is but that particular night I went to a Charity Event, calling by as I left but you had not arrived and it was late when I got back, so didn't like to disturb , so I missed you. .
