Lovaton Farm Camping: Camping, glamping style!

General

  • Scenic site on a friendly family-run farm with easy access from A30
  • On the edge of Dartmoor National Park; 45 minutes' drive to the coast
  • Farm-reared meat products and local apple juice available to buy

Lovaton Farm Camping is a small, family-friendly site on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park, a couple of miles from the village of South Tawton and 15 minutes’ drive from Okehampton. It’s a most handy location for making the most of both coast and countryside, as it’s easily accessed from the A30 and roughly halfway between Devon’s two coastlines (around 45 minutes’ drive from both).

Outdoor enthusiasts should be well served here: there are plenty of places nearby for long walks, and it’s easy for cyclists to get out on the Granite Way and Wray Valley Trail (both traffic-free bike paths along disused railway lines). Cool off with a paddle in a nearby stream or head for one of Devon’s fab beaches for a swim or some surfing.

This site is a simple back-to-basics affair, but guests will have access to toilets, a shower and running water, and there's a firepit available to hire. (Bottled water is available too, as the running water isn't suitable for drinking.) The food is pretty top-notch though: for breakfasts and barbecues, farm-produced sausages, bacon, burgers and apple juice are available on request. For any other bits you may require, there are a couple of supermarkets in Okehampton.

Not in the mood to cook? There are a couple of excellent pubs nearby, with the nearest being a mile and half away in Whiddon Down.

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

No electric barbecues allowed.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

The camping field is lange and lovely with amazing views. The facilities are basic, but there is all you really need and all is new and clean. The owner is fantastic and helpful, offered some great tips on what is worth doing and visitng in the area. We were provided with a fire pit and some wood to burn throughout the evening, which made everything even nicer. Not very busy, peaceful and quiet. Very lovely place and I hope to go back soon. Perfect location for the base to do some hiking in the area.

Wonderful countryside view from a 12 acre field. The owners are incredibly friendly and helpful and checked if we needed anything each day. They gave it a really nice atmosphere. Jane made good recommendations of local places to visit which enhanced our stay. The toilet and shower facilities are always clean. It’s a great base for seeing Dartmoor. There is no light pollution so you can see all the stars at night. We really loved Lovaton Farm and would love to go back again.
