Pitch and Canvas: Camping at Pitch & Canvas

General

  • Small family-run site a mile from Tattenhall
  • 25 minutes' drive from the historic attractions of Chester
  • Fresh free-range eggs; cookery demos, gin tasting, and family picnics

Chosen Cheshire? Then also choose a cheery welcome from the good folks at Pitch and Canvas. This family-run site is a mile from Tattenhall and around a 25-minute drive from the centre of Chester.

Pitch and Canvas is in an area of low light pollution, making for some great stargazing at night. The meadow also gets some spectacular sunsets and has views over Cheshire's unmistakable Sandstone Ridge.

If you don’t fancy cooking there are handmade pizzas to order, or it’s a 25-minute amble to a classic country pub with classic country fare and a range of local ales, or to a smart restaurant that serves up an ever-changing menu based on its own kitchen garden. There’s a small supermarket 15 minutes’ drive away, but for a truly fab brekkie, you’re strongly encouraged to snaffle some local eggs, bacon and sausages from the site's small shop (and reward your forward planning with an ice cream while you're there).

The site also lays on activities for guests, including cookery demos, gin tasting and family picnics (the team can tell you more).

The site’s toilet block houses its clean, modern facilities in a snug wooden hut – sinks, showers (including one with a family room to make it easier with children) and toilets all a very short stroll from your pitch.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Reception is unmanned after 5:30 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Group bookings of 4 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Entertainment and activities are available between 01/08 and 31/08.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

What a lovely campsite! Nothing was a problem and the owners were so friendly and would go beyond to make sure you and your family have an amazing holiday! The site, toilets and showers were always clean and tidy. The shop was very handy in the hot weather we had! We even rented out a fire pit with all of the kit for the night as it got abit chilly and it was amazing!

    Disliked:

Some campers weren’t following the rules. The last night a family had loud music on until gone 2am and then a different family were up screaming and playing football at 5am so we didn’t get much sleep. There was also another family smoking drugs that filled the whole field which wasn’t nice either.

Lovely small campsite, clean facilities and friendly helpful staff. The pod was in need of a little TLC but not enough to effect our review. Great space for a family of 4 with a lovely outside area and fire pit. It was a lovely suprise to find a fridge, plates etc and a kettle in the pod, all came in very useful. This was our 1st time in a pod and we will be doing it again based in this experience ☺️

Quality of the facilities and size of the field (not too big and not too small) children had space to play while still in ear and eye shot.

    Disliked:

The transparency of the Sunday opening times. It's easy to lose track of the days when camping, and it would have been helpful if, when we swapped our ice blocks on Sunday morning we were reminded of the early closing, as we ended up being too late back on the Sunday to swap our ice blocks.
I should point out that the opening times are on the wall in the shop, but a friendly reminder would have been really helpful.

Views and country side area, but very close to Cheshire Oaks. The host Suzanne was a so friendly and helpful. Plus the added bonus of free range eggs from their farm were delicious. (And cheaper than a supermarket ). Our pitch was good and allowed sunshine and then shade later when needed. No need for the alarm as the cockerel was there to wake you up to the fantastic views and smells.

    Disliked:

Nowt, but the middle of the field would be ideal for a climbing frame for the kids.

Brilliant little site, clean and friendly.06/08/2022

Due to a mix up over booking there wasn’t an electric pitch that we paid for but the hosts explained this and put us in the overflow field with an electric extension, which worked even better as this field was almost empty so the kids had loads of space. It was nice and quiet at night so the kids slept well. Little shop on site to get milk, fresh free ranges eggs, ice creams, etc. Toilets were clean and well stocked with toilet roll, hand wash, paper towels and plenty of hot watcher for showers. This was a brilliant little stay for the kids first time camping.

    Disliked:

Not so much a dislike, more a suggestion. The new toilet block isn’t quite finished yet so these things might be on the to do list but I noticed missing is a mirror and a shelf for your toiletries when getting ready. Also the light outside the toilet block is quite bright so as we were next to it the tent was quite light at night.

Two large dogs belonging to other campers off their lead. Tbh they responded well to their owner but with two three year olds in our party we were a little on guard as digs did bound around.

Local attractions

If one ever needed a good reason to go out for a country walk, it’s present here in the shape of The Ice Cream Farm, the biggest ice cream-themed adventure park in the world and a half-hour walk away.

Hikers should make a beeline for the Sandstone Trail, a 34-mile route starting around a 10-minute drive from the site. You needn’t walk the entire length; pick up a booklet locally for info on shorter sections that take in views of castles, fields and hills before depositing you for a well-earned drink at a pub. If you’d prefer to explore on horseback, there’s a riding centre 10 minutes’ walk from the site that can organise treks for all abilities.

For a spot of history, take a trip to one of the nearby castles, such as Beeston Castle (10 minutes), a medieval structure set on top of a cliff, surrounded by a 40-acre woodland park and with some far-reaching views on clear days. Gothic beauty Cholmondley Castle is a little further away at 15 minutes and has nature trails, play areas and a farm shop as well as some gorgeous gardens to wander around.
