  • Peaceful site on the banks of the River Rule in Bonchester Bridge
  • A 15-minute drive to Hawick or Jedburgh; Kielder Forest half an hour
  • Kitchen area on site; village pub next door
A riverside spot in the stunning Scottish borders is an enticing proposition in itself… but what if you could have that and be next door to a friendly village pub too? It’s all here for happy guests at Bonchester Bridge Riverside Park, in a lovely location on the banks of the River Rule and right next door to the lovely village inn (a place of warm welcomes, good food and excellent drinks). It’s not just handy proximity to the pub that draws guests to this park – it’s also the fact that it’s in an area that’s popular for all sorts of outdoor pursuits including hiking, cycling, fishing, watersports and stargazing. There’s a football pitch and playground in the village for kids who require a little more activity close to home. And of course having the river just by the park is handy for those who’d like to launch kayaks and paddleboards, cool their feet after a long walk or even take a refreshing wild swim… All of this is backed up by a strong clutch of facilities on site, including a centrally heated toilet and shower block (with a ladies’ dressing area too) and a kitchen with washing machine, tumble dryer and microwave. Barbecues and campfires are both permitted if you’d like to try your hand at alfresco cookery (or just fancy keeping warm while staring into the embers). Just remember that quiet time is between 11pm and 8am. Bonchester Bridge village is a tiny place but it’s at its liveliest during the annual international sheep-shearing contest (held every August, if you fancy joining the fun). It’s also well situated for outings to Hawick and Jedburgh (both 15 minutes’ drive) or trips across the border to Kielder Forest.

Electric hardstanding and grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: It was a really nice site. The wardens were really welcoming. Showers were great really clean and warm. Next door was The Horse and Hound bar and restaurant. Very welcoming. Food was good and the locals all had a sing song at the end of the night. The instruments were hung on the wall and anyone was welcome to have a go. Great atmosphere. Would definitely stay there again.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Good facilities onsite, warden was friendly but appeared totally oblivious to the noise his barking dog was making, local pub with friendly staff and lovely food.

Disliked: I had booked in for 2 nights, but unfortunately I left after only one night due to the wardens dog constantly barking. Every other visitor on the site also had dogs. Whenever someone walked past the wardens caravan which was next to the shower block his dog would bark, then all the other dogs on the site started barking... This would happen every 20-30 minutes ..The dog was quite as evening came, probably because it was inside the caravan, but at 6am the following morning the wardens dog started barking again, but none of the other dogs on site started barking. I would think it's the wardens job to set a good example, if he couldn't keep his dog quite it should never have been on site.. Would I stay here again...No, not if the wardens dog was onsite.. I would have had a totally different experience had the wardens dog not been there..

From the manager: Hi Gary. Sorry to hear about your recent experience at our campsite. We rotated our wardens during the weekend of your stay and can only imagine the distraction of the handover being the cause as we have had no other reports from other guests of the same issue during their stays. Nevertheless i'm sorry you had to endure the noise from the dog. I hope you give us another opportunity to enjoy our little campsite as the experience is not the norm and we pride ourselves on maintaining a peaceful and quiet environment.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch (riverside)

Liked: Friendly welcome. Well tended toilet block. On-site facilities better than expected.

Disliked: Clingy shower curtain. No shelves at sinks or in showers. Riverside pitch was below expectations, babbling brook had many field drains/septic tank outflows, water treatment plant just downstream of site. Laurel hedging recently planted between pitches had not been weeded, beware the nettles. The pub next to the site was convenient and attractive at first sight. Service was decidedly below par, food adequate at best. The Alsatian dogs at the pub were triggered to bark at any movement, which set off most other dogs within 500 yards. Finally, no Wi-Fi.

From the manager: Hi. Thank you for taking the time to review our campsite. There are hooks between each sink for towels etc and each shower has a wire basket shelf in each. The river doesn't have any septic tank outflows at all although there are two field drains for rainwater runoff to ensure the pitches/campsite not become waterlogged during heavy rain (clean water). I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the riverside pitch, these are by some margin our most popularly booked pitches and are very much in demand with guests regularly sharing positive experiences of their use. We are a back to nature campsite with many areas left as nature intended and where possible utilized to help clearly mark one pitch from another. When fully grown they will allow each pitch a further degree of privacy. The nettles are not a problem if you stick to the gravel tracks and mown grassed areas provided rather than take short cuts through the intended hedging. I cannot comment on your experience of the pub..... it's not ours. Perhaps post your opinions on their pages so that they can benefit from your insights. We don't advertise that we have any Wi-Fi which is why you didn't get any! Anyhoo.... enjoy your camping wherever you may roam. Thanks again for sharing your review.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch (riverside)

Liked: Amazing quiet location beside the babbling river , showers toilets and all the facilities you’d expect with a top rate camping and caravan site including free washing machine and tumble dryer! Chris the warden gave a friendly welcome and the location in the southern the borders was excellent .

Disliked: First impressions of the site going in were that that the pitches needed some TLC …..the grass areas and the dividing hedges were a bit wild but Chris did explain this was their first full year on a previously derelict site and I’m sure with further investment and time this will be a top site

Electric hardstanding and grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet campsite, good size pitches. Excellent showers, toilets, kitchen facilities. Great location too

Disliked: The firewood. Don’t mind the charge for a fire pit, but the “basket” of wood for a tenner was not good value. Three pieces of pine, three pieces of birch and a handful of kindling made from treated timber was disappointing. Treated timber should never be burned because of the chemicals it emits.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi. Thanks for taking the time to review our campsite. We take on board your comments regarding firewood and have found another supplier of sustainably sourced firewood which will benefit our guests next season with more wood for your money. You are absolutely right about treated wood being used for kindling... shouldn't happen and we have ensured that the two are kept well separate. We really appreciate your feedback and look forward to welcoming you back to Bonnie campsite next season. Thanks Again.

Local attractions

Walking boots at the ready – guests here can take a woodland walk directly from the site or follow one of several trails from just outside the village. Or, if you’re feeling particularly energetic, how about the Borders Abbeys Way? This 68-mile route links the great ruins of Kelso, Jedburgh, Melrose and Dryburgh, and short sections of it are just as rewarding if you can’t manage the whole thing (or you could drive – they’re all within a half-hour journey). If the water’s more of your scene, head instead to St Mary’s Loch (45 minutes’ drive), where the active sailing club runs activities including windsurfing, kayaking and yacht training. Lindean Loch (half an hour) is a good place for a wild swim. Heading over the border into England you’ll quickly get to Northumberland National Park and Kielder Forest Park (half an hour). Both are excellent places for walking and other outdoor pursuits, and the two together form Europe’s second-largest dark sky area – head here for great stargazing and observatory events.
