  • Peaceful farm site a short walk from a Cornish cove
  • On the eastern Lizard Peninsula; five minutes' walk to a pub and beach
  • Local produce sold on site; barbecues and firepits allowed
If you’re after a stay somewhere remote and scenic, the Lizard Peninsula should certainly fit the bill – this is Cornwall’s most southerly point, so you could hardly get further away from the trappings of busy modern life. Porthallow Cove Campsite is located on the eastern edge of this splendid spot, in a quiet village location under five minutes' walk from the coast. Porthallow is a small former fishing community just to the south of the peaceful Helford river. Sitting between the neighbouring villages of Saint Keverne and Roskorwell, there's just one road that runs through the village, plus a cluster of houses and a pub. The South West Coast Path skirts the village too, with Porthallow Cove Campsite close to the midpoint of that spectacular long-distance trail. The pitching area at this small coastal farm has stunning sea vistas on the one side and lovely valley views on the other. The main field is set over a very gentle slope as the land approaches the sea, with access to simple portable toilets and a shower. Some locally-produced food is available to buy on the site too for when you're feeling peckish, with cooking easily sorted thanks to barbecue and firepit-friendly rules. A shop, butcher's and newsagents can all be found just down the road in the village of St Keverne (10 minutes' drive).

Local attractions

This southern part of Cornwall is peppered with scenic fishing villages, including nearby recommended spots like Coverack (15 minutes' drive) and Cadgwith (25 minutes). If you're around in the latter on a Friday night (known around these parts as Saint Inebriatus' Eve…) you can join the famed Cadgwith Singers for a singalong of sea shanties at the lively village pub. To the west of The Lizard, the foodie town of Porthleven (30 minutes) is where to head for gastronomy and more good times, or you could head in the other direction towards Falmouth (45 minutes), home to Pendennis Castle, several top-rated beaches and ferries over to St Mawes and St Anthony on the Roseland Heritage Coast. Cornwall does family-friendly very well too, with highlights including (but not limited to) the Cornish Seal Sanctuary at Gweek (25 minutes), Flambards Theme Park (25 minutes) and Trebah Garden (40 minutes). For a glimpse into the life of a Cornish tin miner, meanwhile, you could head to Geevor Tin Mine (an hour), where there's also a wide range of activities like gold panning, candle dipping and pottery throwing.
