  • Basque glamping site on the edge of Zumaia, 2km from the beach
  • Surrounded by flysch cliff landscapes; San Sebastián 35 minutes' drive
  • Railway station a short walk away; restaurant and shop on site
What does staying in the Basque Coast Geopark mean? Well, it means being surrounded by a gorgeous protected environment full of beaches and craggy cliffs, and where the green mountains run all the way down to the sea, forming what’s known as a ‘flysch’ cliff. It’s a special place to spend some time, and one that you’ll be able to explore easily from Kampaoh Zumaia, a glamping site on the edge of the seaside town of Zumaia. This stretch of coast is particularly well known for its beaches, which are popular with surfers, hikers and photographers alike (one of the local beaches is so dramatic it even earned itself a slot as a location for Game of Thrones…) This site is in a strategic position for a Basque coast break – the nearest beach is just under two kilometres away (five minutes’ drive/25 minutes’ walk), with watersports kit hire on site. Being on the edge of town also means easy access to shops and places to eat, and you’ll also be close to the railway station for easy days out (to Bilbao or San Sebastián, for example). Everything on site is designed to keep life nice and easy, too – you’ll be staying in a furnished tent with beds made up, a fan provided to keep things cool, and seating indoors and out for chillout time. A launderette and wifi service are handy things to have, and there’s also a restaurant serving up a wide variety of meals including Basque dishes and takeaways (cleverly, the play park is within view of the terrace so parents can have a drink while keeping an eye on the kids). A shop, barbecue area and picnic tables are on site for self-catering times.

Local attractions

Your nearest beach (Playa de Santiago, five minutes’ drive) is a good option for family days on the sand, or trying out paddleboarding, kayaking and surf lessons. You can also pick up coast paths here for walks along the flysch cliffs – don’t forget your camera, it’s pretty photogenic around here. Elsewhere along the nearby coast, the beaches in Itzurun (10 minutes’ drive) and Zarautz (20 minutes) are well worth visiting for their spectacular scenery. You could also stop in for a fashion fix at the Museo Cristóbal Balenciaga (10 minutes) or look out for some of the vineyards and wineries that have popped up near the seafront. For a change from exploring the gorgeous landscapes, how about a city day? To the west is Bilbao (55 minutes), famed for the must-see Guggenheim Museum, and over to the east is San Sebastián (35 minutes), a foodie favourite for its pintxo bar culture.
