Outdoor adventures by day, comfortable place to stay by night? If that sounds like a good mix, take a look at Kampaoh Sierra de Urbasa, a glamping site surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Sierra de Urbasa. This rural location 10 minutes’ drive from Olazagutía makes a fabulous base for hikes through the gorgeous local landscapes, made up of mountains, rivers, forests and caves to explore and with historic monuments to seek out as well. And as you’re out in proper countryside, well away from any urban light pollution, you should have a good chance of seeing some glittering displays of starts overhead by night as well. Hiking is popular around here, but it’s not the only way to explore – the site has its own riding centre, and staff can also help you organise other adventurous outings in the mountains (or just advise you on the best routes to follow). The surroundings may be wild, but the accommodation certainly isn’t – in fact, it’s rather smart. You’ll be staying in a cool canvas tent kitted out with beds (and bed linen), rugs, lighting and various furnishings so you can relax in comfort. Shared facilities nearby include showers and toilets. There are shops and a couple of places to eat down in town, but after a full day of activity you may well prefer to stay on site and eat at the restaurant. Handily, it’s also got a bar for a nice cool drink to finish your day too.

Local attractions

One of the real draws of this site is the fact that you’ll be able to wander straight out onto hiking trails if you want to. One of the best is the hour-and-a-half walk to the Nacedero del Urederra nature reserve, which has a waterfall and a gleaming turquoise pool (you can also drive there in 10 minutes). Other walks nearby might take you to historic sights like the Dolmen La Cañada (15 minutes’ drive) or Mendiola dolmen (45 minutes), or through the forest to the Monastery of Iranzu (50 minutes). There's also the chance to get underground at Mendukilo caves (45 minutes) or Cuevas Arrikrutz Kobak (an hour), or get your blood really pumping with adventure activities at Urbasa Abentura (half an hour) and ziplines at Txindokiko Itzala (40 minutes). The city of Vitoria-Gasteiz (50 minutes) makes a good day out, with a wander through the medieval quarter, a visit to the cathedral and some time exploring the Gothic architecture. Alternatively, take a dip into the area’s local produce with a visit to Truffle Museum Navarra (40 minutes) and a tour of the vines at Bodegas Pago de Larrainzar (45 minutes).
