What could be better than camping in a spectacular location backed by jagged peaks in the tree-clad Marxuquera mountain range? Glamping without the need to set up a tent, that’s what – so it’s time to head for the Valencia hills and Kampaoh Cova Negra, 15 minutes’ drive inland from the lovely seaside town of Gandía. Spacious glamping options here include smart pre-erected tents of varying sizes, sleeping up to six guests and all with hanging space for your clothes, cooler boxes, somewhere cosy to sit and exclusive-use shower rooms. The site also has impeccable ecological credentials, as it’s powered by solar energy and biomass boilers, while the wonderfully airy tents are shaded by recently planted, fast-growing paulownia tomentosa trees. As its name gives away, this glampsite is close to hiking, biking and rock-climbing adventures in the craggy Cova Negra foothills (20 minutes’ drive), and is therefore something of a beacon for adventuresome daredevils. Even when you’re not busy scaling rocky precipices, you can hone your skills by practising on the zipwires and high-wire climbing courses in the site’s multi-adventure park. Those of you with less energy may prefer to lounge happily in the sun, cool off in the swimming pool and sip icy-cold beers on the restaurant terrace.

Local attractions

Expert climbers and beginners alike can enjoy exciting, adrenaline-filled climbs in the Cova Negra (20 minutes’ drive). For something really challenging, book in advance to try La Falconera via ferrata climbing route (15 minutes’ walk), which leads up and down sheer rock faces and across hanging bridges suspended over deep gorges. Follow the hilly Font del Mondúver trail (40 minutes) for spectacular views from the mountains down to the Med coast, or cycle up to the Mirador de la Mallà (90 minutes by bike) to glimpse the serried ranks of peaks around the Barxeta Valley. If that all sounds just too hardcore, limit yourself to gentle strolls among the trees in Torradores Marxuquera (five minutes’ drive), a shady park with spectacular vistas to the Marxuquera foothills. Beach bunnies can descend on Gandía (15 minutes) to laze on sand backed by palm trees, before meandering along the promenade to seafront tapas bars and pizzerias at sunset. Xeraco Beach (20 minutes) is the spot for windsurfers, while the sandy stretch at Oliva (half an hour) is backed by dunes and popular with families.
