  • Glamping site with safari tents half an hour’s drive from Soria
  • Cañón del Río Lobos half an hour’s drive; Laguna Negra 45 minutes
  • Outdoor pool, sports courts, kids’ club and canoe hire
You might want to pack your best, sturdiest hiking boots when you book a holiday at Kampaoh Picos de Urbión, half an hour’s drive from the city of Soria, in Castile and León. That’s because you’ll be within easy reach of three national parks there: Cañón del Río Lobos (half an hour), with its limestone gorges; Sierra de Urbión y Laguna Negra (45 minutes), with a high-altitude lagoon and trails leading up Pico de Urbión mountain; and Sierra de Cebollera (one hour), whose woods are home to foxes, deer and birds of prey. So that’s the hikers, the adventurers and the birdwatchers sorted. But that doesn’t mean that those who just want some chillout time should feel left out. Surrounded by a grassy lawn, the site’s outdoor pool is a top spot for winding down; it also has a separate children’s area with a waterslide. If you manage to drag the kids away from the pool, they might like to explore the playground and make new friends during assorted organised activities. You can also rent canoes and pedal boats to check out the Embalse de la Cuerda del Pozo reservoir, have a game of tennis or a football match. Accommodation is in safari tents with comfy beds and thoughtful touches like mosquito nets and a portable fridge. The site also has a restaurant and a grocery store; if you don’t find what you need for your barbecue there, try the nearest supermarket in Abejar (five minutes), where there’s also a bakery. Bathrooms, showers and a launderette complete the picture.

Local attractions

Explore the medieval centre of Soria, on the Douro River. Check out the collections of archaeological artifacts and antiquities at the Museo Numantino, or delve into Spanish literature at the Casa de los Poetas. If you need a breather, Alameda de Cervantes de Soria is a large park with shaded lawns and an observation tower. Across the Douro from Soria, the river bank is punctuated by religious buildings, including the ruins of the medieval Monasterio de San Juan de Duero (half an hour’s drive) and the Ermita de San Saturio (40 minutes), which dates from the early 1700s and seems to cling to the rocks above the water. The forested limestone landscape of Cañón del Río Lobos Natural Park is home to a colony of vultures, but you might also be able to spot otters and wild boars during your hikes here. The 12th century Hermitage of San Bartolomé (45 minutes’ drive) is said to have been a key location for the Order of the Knights Templar.
