  • Cabo de Gata Natural Park 15 minutes' drive; walks from the site
  • Outdoor pool, Jacuzzi, gym and sports centre on site
This is an absolutely gorgeous part of the Andalusian coast… and perhaps even more so because it’s still relatively undiscovered by mass tourism. The area around Kampaoh Los Escullos is marked by stunning sandy beaches, great hiking trails and unusual landscapes where the desert seems to tumble into the sea. Somehow this gorgeous area, about 40 minutes’ drive east of Almería, still flies under the radar a bit, so when you come along to stay here you should find plenty of peaceful space to explore. And that goes for the site itself too, a peaceful space that’s certified as an Ecological Campsite. The glamping tents are well spaced around the grounds, so you’ll always have your own little patch of land to relax on. If you're all about the relaxation side of holiday life, you’ll be pleased to hear there’s an outdoor pool on site with a Jacuzzi, loungers and Balinese-style beds where you can chill out in comfort. Those who like to have a lot more to do can hit the gym or the sports centre, which has tennis, paddle tennis and courts for basketballs and football. You may also like to peruse the tourist information area for the lowdown on local places to go and hiking trails to follow (reception’s also open 24 hours a day for more advice). Everything here is designed to make life easy, with tents supplied with beds, bed linen and seating, and shared facilities including a launderette, a mini market and bathrooms that are accessible for guests with limited mobility.

Local attractions

Beach time, perhaps? Once you’ve spent some time on the sands at your local, Playa Los Escullos (20 minutes’ walk), you might like to set your sights a bit further afield with outings to places like La Isleta del Moro (five minutes’ drive) or Playa de Mónsul (20 minutes). The coast doesn’t all have to be about beaches, though – you can also take a walk through the natural coastal landscapes at Cabo de Gata Natural Park (15 minutes), join kayak outings with Kayak Cabo de Gata (half an hour) or explore life below the waves with Ecoágata scuba diving (20 minutes). Or how about an urban wander? Almería (40 minutes) is home to some excellent sights including the 10th-century Alcazaba, the cathedral, the Casa del Cine Almeria and the Archaeology Museum. There are also some great tapas bars to try and some unusual things to seek out, like the statue of John Lennon in Plaza de las Flores.
