  • Valley views and animals on site; pub and shop five minutes’ drive
What could be better than wild camping? For many people, the answer to that will be wild camping with lots of animals around. If that’s the case, welcome to Stickle Tarn, in Carmarthenshire’s Brechfa Forest… where the enclosed tents-only camping paddock has views of water buffaloes, alpacas and goats grazing in neighbouring fields. Guests on the level grass pitches have access to drinking water and a compost loo, but this is an off-grid site so there's no electricity (don't forget to bring torches and batteries…). Hammocks and swing seats around the paddock make a fabulous place to flop for an idle half an hour or so watching the antics of the animals. A firepit is supplied with logs for an evening of alfresco cooking. The smallholding operates a compact farm shop, where you can buy home-produced meat and seasonal vegetables for the grill, as well as eggs for breakfast fry-ups. Brechfa (five minutes’ drive) has a restaurant and pub (advance booking required) and if you run out of basics, the village community shop opens Monday to Saturday until 1pm. Please bear in mind that this is a working and self-sustaining smallholding and there will be tractor activity and logging noise during the day, although these are kept to a minimum when guests are present.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The vibe was great! A quiet field surrounded by dogs, goats, alpacas, water buffalo, chickens and ducks is honestly our idea of heaven. We had such a lovely stay and the hosts were so friendly and kind! The area is stunning - the forests are absolutely mind blowing. We also loved the farm shop! Had so many cool crafty things in as well as buffalo sausages which we thoroughly enjoyed! Thank you for having us we had the best stay!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Friendly owner

Disliked: When we arrived, we were told we couldn't stay in our vans and were told it's written in the description/rules. I've since had another look at the description and rules and I still cannot find it. The owner did offer for us to stay on the drive but there were cement mixers and concrete blocks stored there and it was a bit like staying on a building site so we opted to go elsewhere.

From the manager: Our listing is for a none electric grass pitch the symbol of a tent which you have to select when booking, the symbols for yurts camper vans caravans are not available for selection as we do not provide facilities for those, So yes camping is in a field which is across another field and due to the weather which we have no control over access is wet and muddy and not suitable for vehicles. Yes to the side of our drive we have building supplies as we are doing work to our house. Sorry our grass camping pitch area did not reach your expectations, when I came out later as I had found somewhere else for you to park up on hard standing you had gone. I would suggest when booking a grass camping pitch you make contact and check in advance that a field is suitable for your van. Take care and happy motorhoming.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The host were really welcoming and invited us to walk around their farm with them to meet the animals, it also had a little farm shop on site. Its set back from tourist attractions so really nice and quiet for the family to play during the day and sleep peacefully at night but the main road isn't too far for out and about stuff. There's a compost loo on site it's brans new so really clean and sanitiser is provided and they provided us with a fire for the evening

Local attractions

Nature lovers take note – Brechfa Forest teems with squirrels, deer, pine martens, woodpeckers and finches. Perhaps you’ll spot them on rambles straight from the campsite: way-marked routes are suitable for all levels, from an easy circular riverside stroll to the challenging Forest Garden Trail through giant redwood and eucalyptus trees. More nature walks can be found at the National Botanic Garden of Wales (half an hour’s drive). Mountain bikers can access tracks from Byrgwm (10 minutes) or the steep Gorlech MTB trail (15 minutes), while those of you looking for gentler pastimes can play a round at the Carmarthen Golf Club and Driving Range (half an hour). Kids can have a day out at the beach as sandy expanses at New Quay, Aberporth and Penbryn (backed by steep cliffs) are all within 45 minutes’ drive. The seaside town of Aberaeron (also 45 minutes), known for its brightly coloured Georgian houses, is right on the Wales Coast Path for clifftop hikes, and if you’re lucky you might spot Cardigan Bay’s famous bottlenose dolphins from the shingle beach.
