Golden Hill Wood: Camping field (photo added by manager on 27/07/2023)

General

  • Wild camping with Black Mountains views 15 minutes’ drive from Usk
  • Tintern Abbey 25 minutes’ drive, and Symonds Yat 40 minutes
  • Back-to-basics pitches with woodland crafts courses available

Set in a 1.5-acre, hilltop meadow looking out over forested hills to the Black Mountains, Golden Hill Wood is both a basic Monmouthshire pop-up site and a spectacular place to pitch up. There’s masses of space in the camping field, and guests are also very welcome to explore and let their kids play in the adjoining broadleaf woodland.

One of the missions at Golden Hill Wood is to manage the woods and meadow for biodiversity and conservation, and to support traditional woodland products – to learn more, you can book courses in woodland crafts when you arrive at the site.

As far as food goes, you can cook up a barbecue feast on your firepit, eat at several pubs within 20 minutes’ drive, or head for takeaways and restaurants in the pretty town of Usk (15 minutes in the car).

Facilities on this simple wild site stretch only to a compost toilet. There is no electricity and no running water, so come prepared with a supply of water and torches – although of course, the lack of light on the camping field means that you’ll hopefully catch some dazzling displays of stars on clear nights.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.

Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.

There is no reception on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

The massive flies because it was a beautiful hot day but that’s not your fault, it’s because we camp in fields! 🤣

I had an amazing week camping at Golden Hill! It's a really pretty spot, far enough from town to feel remote, but close enough to have plenty to do nearby.
The firepits work great, and you get a decent amount of wood in a bag. Lots of fun cooking over the flames and toasting marshmallows!
They also have the single most luxurious long drop facility ever, which they keep nice and clean.
Celi and Reyna are super friendly and made me feel so welcome and at home. They even invited me to join in their spoon carving workshop, and I learnt heaps of new techniques and got to make a spoon!
Plus bonus cute smiles from their little one :)
I came home feeling happy :)

    Disliked:

Well, I was definitely glad to get home to a nice hot shower, but that's exactly as advertised - I knew what I was getting into!

A tiny 'back to basics' site.
    Small and friendly.
    Beautiful setting.
If you want to genuinely get away from everything then this is the place to do it.
No distractions, just surrounded by countryside.
    Almost wild camping!

Hello, thanks so much for pointing out the gate issue - we’ve added an easier latch so hopefully that’s now resolved!👍

Local attractions

Staying at Golden Hill Wood means easy access to hiking paths and cycling trails in the Black Mountains (half an hour’s drive), and all the sporting action – paddleboarding, canoeing and kayaking – along the river in the Wye Valley (20 minutes). If you’re travelling with kids, the wacky sculpture trails in the Forest of Dean (45 minutes) might persuade them that walking is a ‘good thing’ to do.

For more strenuous sporting activity, go gorge walking at Symonds Yat (40 minutes), run yourselves ragged on rope courses and zipwires at Puzzlewood (35 minutes), or ride a Segway through the forest at Go Ape Mallards Pike (45 minutes).

Less adrenaline-inducing pursuits hereabouts include castle-spotting: have a wander round the romantic ruins of 15th-century Raglan Castle, and admire the mighty defence towers at clifftop Chepstow Castle (both 20 minutes). Alternatively, spend a peaceful afternoon exploring the chapels and cloisters of landmark Tintern Abbey (25 minutes), or discover all about regional Welsh life at the Usk Rural Life Museum (15 minutes).

Must see
