General

  • Small family-run site in the village of Llanvetherine
  • 10 minutes' drive from Abergavenny and the Brecon Beacons
  • Footpath leading from the site to Offa's Dyke Path

Hiking boots at the ready, folks – Church Cottage Caravan and Camping is in the little village of Llanvetherine, a prime spot for days spent stomping along the trails of the Brecon Beacons.

This is classic Welsh countryside, with a little brook running through the site and gorgeous green views at every turn. It’ll take you mere minutes to drive to the eastern side of the Beacons from here, although you might equally consider leaving the wheels behind and striding out on foot: a path leads directly out to hook up with the Offa’s Dyke Path and the Three Castles Walk.

In need of a good feed after your efforts? There’s a fab country pub five minutes’ drive away, or you could hit foodies’ fave Abergavenny in around 10 minutes for market stalls, Michelin stars and all sorts in between. There are lots of independent shops to poke around in here too if you fancy a break from the outdoorsy stuff.

Back at base, all is kept quite simple to max out the peaceful vibes – spacious pitches are served by squeaky clean facilities, and there’s a wifi connection to help you plan your next path (or share view pics with the unfortunates back at work). Canine pals who want to get in on the Welsh wanderings are welcome to stay too.

A really warm, friendly welcome from a very nice young couple just starting out on their new venture. The gravel pitch was very flat with both electric and water. The facilities were excellent - so clean and warm. A booklet about the camp site and surrounding area was a very good addition. There were maps and info about local amenities. A really good base to explore the area.

    Disliked:

Lighting outside the facilities would be a good idea especially for the winter months. Unfortunately no tv or mobile phone signal because of location but this was compensated by free WiFi.

This is a small lovely site (12 I think) quite near a well used road but certainly not noisy. We don't bring a car so took a taxi into Abergavenny (£20 return) although Flo did offer us a lift! There is walking from the site across well marked fields to Offers Dyke path or the Three Castles walk, one was enough for me though. There is provided information of the surrounding area which is really helpful and I'm sure we will be back to sample some of the many things to do. The facilities are really clean with outside washing up, okay if it doesn't rain. Really enjoyed our stay and the weather was great. Good luck with new baby Flo.

Easy to find site. Beautiful scenery. Quiet spot with lovely walks for the dog. Easy access to Abergavenny for supermarkets etc. Nice pub down the road with a real fire and good food. On the site the toilet/shower block is very warm and clean. I loved the basket of toiletries in the ladies! The couple who run the site were very caring and asked each day if everything was ok. I would love to visit again soon.

This small campsite is run by a lovely young couple, Flo & Ed, who couldn’t have been more friendly & helpful... not forgetting their wonderful daughter Izzy!
From the minute we arrived we were made to feel more than welcome.
Flo greeted us with a really useful handbook of the area, which included walks, local pubs etc & a beautiful jar of homemade jam.
All of the touring pitches are level & have an electric hookup. A water tap is share between 2 pitches so no walking to fill up your hog!!
The shower/toilet block was immaculately clean & warm...a far cry from some sites that we have visited.
WiFi was excellent, however, no TV signal if that’s your bag. Not an issue for us as we were there for the scenery, walking & to get away from it all!
The site itself is located just off Offa’s dyke path & within walking distance of Skirrid.
There are so many walks straight from the site that it really is a walkers paradise.
Dogs are more than welcome here too & our young Lab had no end of fun jumping styles & taking in all the sniffs!
Only 10 mins drive & you are in Abergavenny which has a great Morrison’s supermarket & Monmouth is 20 mins away.
The Hunters moon pub (5 mins drive) a smashing village pub, is also Dog friendly in the bar & have a great selection of beers (including gluten free!) & lovely food.
We will definitely return next year to do more exploring.
Thanks again to Flo & Ed for letting us enjoy a very special place!

Directions

The site is very easy to find, just off the B4521. If you're arriving so Church Cottage is on your left, the entrance is a little tight so it's best to go on just past the gate, turn around and approach from your right.

Local attractions

It’s safe to say most folks are drawn here by the Brecon Beacons National Park – around its 500 or so square miles are heaps of options for leisurely strolls, mountain scrambles, mountain biking and horse riding (and a mountain railway for those whose legs won’t stretch to such endeavours). Heading in the other direction, Ross-on-Wye is half an hour away for days spent paddling canoes on the River Wye.

The national park’s not the only place for a walk though: the Offa’s Dyke Path is a short trot away, and locals also advise wandering straight from the site to the ruins of Whitecastle, half an hour away on foot, before perhaps continuing on the rest of the Three Castles Walk.

For a break from all the active pursuits, head to the Big Pit National Coal Museum or take the kids to Cantref Adventure Farm. Plus there’s a whole cluster of castles to conquer: Crickhowell, Raglan, Usk, Grosmont and Skenfrith castles are all within a half-hour drive.

Must see

  • Raglan Castle (6.4 miles)
  • Blaenavon Ironworks (8.6 miles)
  • Blaenavon World Heritage Centre & Tourist Information Centre (8.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Skenfrith Castle (6.0 miles)
  • The Kymin (10.5 miles)
