General

  • Small family-run site in the village of Llanvetherine
  • 10 minutes' drive from Abergavenny and the Brecon Beacons
  • Footpath leading from the site to Offa's Dyke Path

Hiking boots at the ready, folks – Church Cottage Caravan and Camping is in the little village of Llanvetherine, a prime spot for days spent stomping along the trails of the Brecon Beacons.

This is classic Welsh countryside, with a little brook running through the site and gorgeous green views at every turn. It’ll take you mere minutes to drive to the eastern side of the Beacons from here, although you might equally consider leaving the wheels behind and striding out on foot: a path leads directly out to hook up with the Offa’s Dyke Path and the Three Castles Walk.

In need of a good feed after your efforts? There’s a fab country pub five minutes’ drive away, or you could hit foodies’ fave Abergavenny in around 10 minutes for market stalls, Michelin stars and all sorts in between. There are lots of independent shops to poke around in here too if you fancy a break from the outdoorsy stuff.

Back at base, all is kept quite simple to max out the peaceful vibes – spacious pitches are served by squeaky clean facilities, and there’s a wifi connection to help you plan your next path (or share view pics with the unfortunates back at work). Canine pals who want to get in on the Welsh wanderings are welcome to stay too.

Our first, but not last, stay at Church Cottage, we stayed for one week and enjoyed every minute. Not a large site but with level hard standing pitches each with it's own hook up and fresh water supply, plenty of room for van and awning and room to park your car.
The toilet/shower block were exceptionally clean and stocked with additional toiletries for your use. The waste facilities were perfect too, easy access and spotlessly clean. Flo and Ed and there two delightful children welcome you on arrival, and having only been open since May 2018 the site is a credit to them, and very popular too.
The views are amazing there are some great walks and short drives to loads of places of interest and to Abergavenny town centre which has every kind of shop you could wish for and a brilliant market on certain days.Visitors get a welcome pack on arrival which is very informative, and there is free wi fi.

Everything about it, spacious well kept pitches, which even had a picnic table with seats provided, such a nice touch. Flo was the perfect hostess, so friendly without being intrusive, you just knew if you had a problem she would help you resolve it.

Wonderful hosts who were so welcoming and very friendly when we had car issues upon leaving, Quiet site with nice walks that admittedly were a bit much for me but only due to my own poor fitness I am sure keen walkers would love these.
Only 10 minute drive to Abergavenny which is a lovely place
I believe the site has plans for a little shop and a pizza oven which would be great and save having to drive to the supermarket.
Lovely site and great for relaxing time .

    Disliked:

Only one small dislike which really cannot be helped and that is the road outside can be loud at times which is a shame as the campsite and surroundings are so idyllic

Very clean site. Owners were very welcoming and friendly. The pitches are big enough that you can pitch length way or side on. Great showers and toilet facilities even if only a couple for the site. Nice dark site enabling those who what to sit out at night and see the stairs a great view.

    Disliked:

More like a suggestion than a dislike but the entrance could do with being wider making it easier to enter and leave the park with caravan. Also not the fault of the owners but traffic first thing in the morning and tea time can be heavy which does make noise.

OMG, this small campsite is a sparkling Welsh gem. Flo and Ed the owners are so lovely and always available to help or just for a chat. On arrival you are provided with a welcome book and trust me, it was well read and full of helpful information.
Flo and Ed know the area well and can fill in any gaps if you wish.
The local castles, all of which can be walked to, are fascinating and a real insight into England and Welsh history. There are pubs not far away and Abergavenny is nearby with supermarkets and shops, with canal walks etc.
Phone signals and TV signals are poor, so bring a box set or two. This may seem a downside, believe me it's not. I was so chilled after a day it was a real detox. The toilet and shower block is clean and tidy and well serviced. Hot water and a good sized shower. The views are to die for. Such a glorious place. We will return.

Directions

The site is very easy to find, just off the B4521. If you're arriving so Church Cottage is on your left, the entrance is a little tight so it's best to go on just past the gate, turn around and approach from your right.

Local attractions

It’s safe to say most folks are drawn here by the Brecon Beacons National Park – around its 500 or so square miles are heaps of options for leisurely strolls, mountain scrambles, mountain biking and horse riding (and a mountain railway for those whose legs won’t stretch to such endeavours). Heading in the other direction, Ross-on-Wye is half an hour away for days spent paddling canoes on the River Wye.

The national park’s not the only place for a walk though: the Offa’s Dyke Path is a short trot away, and locals also advise wandering straight from the site to the ruins of Whitecastle, half an hour away on foot, before perhaps continuing on the rest of the Three Castles Walk.

For a break from all the active pursuits, head to the Big Pit National Coal Museum or take the kids to Cantref Adventure Farm. Plus there’s a whole cluster of castles to conquer: Crickhowell, Raglan, Usk, Grosmont and Skenfrith castles are all within a half-hour drive.

Must see

  • Raglan Castle (6.4 miles)
  • Blaenavon Ironworks (8.6 miles)
  • Blaenavon World Heritage Centre & Tourist Information Centre (8.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Skenfrith Castle (6.0 miles)
  • The Kymin (10.5 miles)
