Biking in the hills, strolling along sandy beaches and birdwatching in the countryside – you can take your pick of the lot at Finca Oasis Las Palmeras, a site in the Axarquía area looking out over the stunning Lake Viñuela, Sierra Tejeda mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. So what will it be first? If cycling is your preferred pursuit, take to the nearby Route of the Olive Oil and Mountains (five minutes’ drive) and ride through old olive groves and whitewashed villages. Birdwatchers will want to make their way to the mountains near Zafarraya (20 minutes) with binoculars in hand, while beachcombers should speed straight to Costa del Sol beaches like Torre del Mar (25 minutes south). All that movement is hungry work, so pedal back to the park for homecooked food at the on-site restaurant. For a morning meal, request breakfast in advance or head into Periana and pile up on pastries from the bakery. The village is also home to a butcher, fishmonger and supermarkets, as well as restaurants serving typical Axarquia specialities – keep an eye out for spots selling churros (fried dough sticks) to dip into hot chocolate. Take your treat back to Finca Oasis Las Palmeras so the kids can race around the play area as you eat and browse the site’s wifi.

Local attractions

For chilled-out afternoons, set your sights on a stint in the sulphurous Moorish-style baths at Baños de Vilo, just over 10 minutes’ drive. After your soak, follow up with a wander around the source of the Rio Guaro next door, a waterway that flows into the nearby Lake Viñuela (10 minutes). If the coast is calling your name, go south to the seaside around Torre del Mar and settle in on a sun lounger with a glass of sangria from one of the beachside bars. Once you’re well-rested, meander to the Marina of Caleta de Vélez along the esplanade for watersports or to indulge in a Costa del Sol speciality – a plate of seafood – at one of the restaurants facing the Mediterranean. Here in spring and summer? Don’t miss fiestas lauding local produce, from the Festival of Verdial Olive Oil in April to Periana’s summertime celebration of peaches.

Fully-serviced gravel and sand motorhome pitch

Liked: There would have been some stunning views, but we arrived during the 'Sahara Storm' so everything was Orange and visibility was extremely poor. Site fee was 10 euros per night out of season, so very fair.

Disliked: No-one on site when we arrived except a couple of other motorhomes. Only saw the owner when we left. Very badly sloped pitches in all directions. Toilet waste was down a hole in the ground covered with an open grill. We paid a deposit when we booked, but were charged the whole amount when we paid, so effectively paid the deposit twice! Restaurant was closed, so cannot comment. Wi-Fi was non-existent unless in the Restaurant........which was closed!

From the manager: Thank you for your comments. It's a shame you arrived during the sand storm, but obviously we can't control the weather! It was a pretty spectacular sight in itself! There is a phone number on the gate, if you need assistance and the owner is not on site. Apologies if you were charged the full amount, you should have said you had paid the deposit already - we are happy to reimburse the 3 euros if you would like? The wifi normally works on the restaurant's covered terrace even if the restaurant is shut (open Thursday-Sunday). We will shortly be revamping the site to include more facilities, levelling the pitches etc.

Liked: Views are lovely, food in the restaurant very good. Periana town within walking distance and has good choice of shops, bars & Cafes.

Disliked: Basic facilities but all works just have to get use to being in a rural area.
