  • Peaceful wooden cabins among olive groves with mountain views
  • A 10-minute drive from the centre of Bar and half an hour from Ulcinj
  • Scenic swimming pool, sun terrace and restaurant on site
Do yourself a favour and bag a break at Terasa Bartula. This small, peaceful site is in the south of Montenegro, just under five kilometres from the centre of the coastal town of Bar. There are some very splendid views to be had from around this rather special site: peek out of the window of your cabin or lounge around by the pool – either way you’ll be able to gaze up at greenery and craggy mountain peaks. The spacious terrace around the pool has been generously supplied with sun loungers for laidback lazing; it merges with the shaded terrace of the bar-restaurant, where you can stop for convenient eats and drinks. A play area and games room are on site as well, and there’s a free wifi service too. The area around this garden-filled site is all olive groves, some of which have been here for quite some time: in fact, a couple of kilometres away you can gawp at what’s said to be one of the oldest trees on the entire planet. You’ll of course also want to spend some time down in Bar, taking in its beaches and King Nikola’s Palace; the site also makes a fab base for visits to Lake Skadar and Ulcinj (the country’s southernmost town) or hikes in the surrounding mountains.

Local attractions

Bar (10 minutes' drive), a modern town on the Adriatic coast, really is a stunner – while here, you'll spend a fair bit of time taking leisurely strolls along its handsome harbour promenade, perhaps stopping off for dinner at a traditional fish restaurant en route. King Nikola's Palace, once the abode of Montenegrin royalty, makes an interesting break from the boardwalk; Stari Bar ('Old Bar' – 10 minutes) is also well worth visiting for its older buildings and sweeping hilltop views. Also on the Adriatic is Ulcinj (30 minutes), a well-preserved town close to the Albanian border. While here, make sure to have a gander at the old Ottoman-built mosque and spend a good few hours wandering though the sleepy streets of the old town. Should you wish to stray beyond the sandy sea coast, you may well be enticed by Lake Skadar, one of the largest in the Balkans. Wild water lilies, monasteries perched on islands and varied local birdlife are among the attractions to be checked out here – for help getting your bearings or to book excursions, stop off for a chat with the folk at Lake Skadar National Park Visitor Centre (35 minutes).
