Bar (10 minutes' drive), a modern town on the Adriatic coast, really is a stunner – while here, you'll spend a fair bit of time taking leisurely strolls along its handsome harbour promenade, perhaps stopping off for dinner at a traditional fish restaurant en route. King Nikola's Palace, once the abode of Montenegrin royalty, makes an interesting break from the boardwalk; Stari Bar ('Old Bar' – 10 minutes) is also well worth visiting for its older buildings and sweeping hilltop views. Also on the Adriatic is Ulcinj (30 minutes), a well-preserved town close to the Albanian border. While here, make sure to have a gander at the old Ottoman-built mosque and spend a good few hours wandering though the sleepy streets of the old town. Should you wish to stray beyond the sandy sea coast, you may well be enticed by Lake Skadar, one of the largest in the Balkans.
