  • Family-friendly site with grassy pitches on the outskirts of Agropoli
  • Paestum 15 minutes’ drive; Monte Tresino hikes half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; views of the hilly countryside; barbecue provided
On the outskirts of the town of Agropoli (five minutes’ drive or a 15-minute walk), in the Cilento area of the Italian region of Campania, Tende Sotto Le Stelle is a peaceful, family- and dog-friendly spot where grassy pitches come with views of distant forest-covered hills. The name of the site translates as ‘tents under the stars’, and indeed, as darkness falls, you’ll be treated to the spectacle of the vast night sky – a pretty decent way to round out a day spent… at the seaside, maybe? Agropoli anchors the southern tip of the Gulf of Salerno, and the town has a long sandy beach with several establishments hiring out sun loungers and umbrellas. The waters along this stretch of coast, which includes the Santa Maria di Castellabate protected marine area (35 minutes), are pretty spectacular, so it’s worth considering a snorkelling or scuba diving trip with a local outfit. You might end up swimming alongside fish, crustaceans and turtles. Back at the beach, when you start to get hungry, you won’t have far to go, since pizzerias and seafood restaurants line the palm tree-shaded promenade. Speaking of food… the friendly owner of Tende Sotto Le Stelle provides a barbecue for her guests, who can stock up on provisions at the grocery shop just down the road (10 minutes’ walk) or drive into town for a wider range of options. The site comes with a toilet block with showers and a drying room, plus charging facilities and recycling points.

Local attractions

History buffs ought not to miss the Archaeological Park of Paestum (15 minutes’ drive), with its well-preserved Greek temples dating back to the fifth century BC. The Greek colony known as Poseidonia subsequently became Paestum, a settlement of the Romans, who built a forum, sanctuaries and an amphitheatre. A modern museum houses artefacts excavated in this area. There are several hiking trails on forested Monte Tresino (half an hour), from where you can also take in splendid views of the coastline. Stop at the Villaggio Abbandonato di San Giovanni, a ghost town with stone buildings including a 10th-century church and the ruins of a couple of medieval towers. A UNESCO Global Geopark, the Parco Nazionale del Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni (55 minutes) is home to otters, wolves and hares, plus birds like shrikes and woodpeckers. This vast natural area is marked by karst cave systems, limestone gorges and waterfalls.
