  • Back-to-basics camping near Newborough on the Isle of Anglesey
  • 10 minutes’ drive to Llanddwyn Beach; 40 to Llanberis for Snowdon
  • Dog-friendly, off-grid grass pitches; pub and café five minutes’ drive
Off-grid and relaxed, the camping field at Shady Acres, near Newborough on Anglesey, is pretty much just that – several acres of grass fields carefully maintained for tourers and tents, and sheltered by mature trees. Everything is very simple here; just book, rock up and choose your own pitch. Dogs and kids are welcome, and there's lots of space for them all to let off steam safely in the fields. You’ll also be in a great position for lots of local walks, including a path through Newborough Warren National Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ stroll) that leads down to sandy Llanddwyn Beach. Barbecues are permitted by your pitch – if you’re running short on anything to make that happen, pick it up from the supermarket in Gaerwen (10 minutes’ drive). Newborough village (also known as Niwbwrch, five minutes) has a pub and café too. Basic amenities stretch to toilets and a washroom. There is no electricity on site, so remember to pack a couple of decent torches for moving around after dark.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The open field and location were perfect. Price was £10 per night - perfect for us as we had family staying in a caravan in the area so just needed somewhere to sleep. Quiet and everyone well spaced out. It is a basic site with two toilets and sinks. We arrived at night and I was a bit freaked out because it was dark and I couldn’t see what 8 legged mates might be lurking. There weren’t any. Always stocked with loo roll and the addition of a mirror was very welcome. Didn’t meet the owners to thank them as we were arriving late and leaving early. Looking forward to returning.

Disliked: Second night we moved spots and only in the morning noticed the litter left by previous campers. Not owners fault, shame people don’t clear up after themselves.

Liked: Easy access to field and was easy to find an area suitable to get a level pitch. Water and two interesting makeshift toilets if needed.

Disliked: Previous users had left some litter in the grass.

Local attractions

Craving some beach time? Head on down to Llanddwyn Beach (10 minutes’ drive) for walks to its landmark lighthouse and views to Snowdonia. Up the activity ante at Rhosneigr (20 minutes), with twin beaches popular for surfing, boating, kayaking and snorkelling. If all that sounds too tame, coasteering, rock climbing, abseiling and river-gorge scrambling are all available around Holyhead (half an hour), and you can also take fast-paced rib rides along the Menai Straits (20 minutes). For gentler times, head inland to Pili Palas Nature World (20 minutes) to see butterflies, moths and birds flying free in the Butterfly House, or take a tour of the chapel and towers of 13th-century moated Beaumaris Castle (half an hour). And of course, as the site is only 15 minutes from Anglesey’s Britannia Bridge, it’s easy to whizz back over to the mainland and spend a day exploring Snowdonia National Park. Take the Snowdon Mountain Railway up to the top of Wales’ highest mountain from Llanberis (40 minutes), tour 19th-century workshops at the National Slate Museum (both 40 minutes) or take strolls to Swallow Falls in Gwydyr Forest from Betws-y-Coed (50 minutes).
