  • Well-maintained and friendly site with spectacular views of Bannow Bay
  • Horse and pony trekking available from the site
  • Dog-friendly setting a 45-minute drive from ferries at Rosslare
Apart from winning the lottery, there probably aren't many things more blissful than a horsey canter along an Irish beach. If this too is your idea of what you'd do on any holiday, you're well placed to sort it at Wexford's Roches Campervan and Campsite: it's right on the Bannow estuary and the site owners run a horse and pony trekking centre alongside their working dairy farm. You might not be able to imagine many views more blissful than over the sea from Roches either – perhaps a view of a winning lottery ticket...? And the site also has direct access to the bay: it's in the sunny south east of Ireland with loads of beaches and historical sites nearby, and kayak hire is available on site. Base yourself here for fab flat and bass fishing in the estuary too, and walks alongside it, and splendid Wexford beaches, and old old sites like Tintern Abbey and the Clonmines castles. Pubs, a chemist, two supermarkets, a tyre centre and hair salons are at the local village of Wellingtonbridge a short drive away. Roches has a shower and toilet block, internet access, charging facilities and chemical disposal. Barbecues and campfires are allowed, but if you're too blissed out/knackered after your horse ride to sort supper, trot along to one of the several nearby pubs serving tasty feed – trad Irish music sessions are often on the menu too. Music is also available on site at weekends in June, July and August, with midweek karaoke for the kids. The site is 45 minutes from Rosslare if you're heading to/from Europe and want an overnight stay.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Really enjoyed our stay… lovely setting, tiered levels all overlooking the sea inlet… we saw a beautiful sunrise . Halloween trail we walked at night with a torch under the stars to the Halloween decorated old mill.
Live band in the campers area (indoor) and the campers all seamed to be enjoying their drinks . We listen from the van .. kids were singing along …. 11pm
Was a shut off for noise and was spot on time and we all slept well. Oh forgot to mention the coffee van and chipper van on site too- loads of seating areas and a short cliff walk the kids enjoyed. Also staff were so friendly! Good job all.

Disliked: We were on the grass which was fine as we didn’t need power but long grass and had loose wet cut grass on top all ended up in the campervan … could be worse !
Could do with a playground.
But we had a ball .

Local attractions

The ruin of 13th-century Tintern Abbey (not the Wordsworth one) is one of many old sites to see in Co Wexford and its surrounds. See also Hook Lighthouse at nearby Hook Head, the oldest working lighthouse in the world, and 16th-century Duncannon Fort with its maritime museum. Several towns and villages are around Bannow Bay (although do go fishing first): pedal or potter around the likes of Saltmills, Newtown, Ballygow, Ballyowen and the splendidly named Haggard Bridge to carefully compare the Guinness in each. If you're lucky enough to be on an extended trip (perhaps with the aid of that winning lottery ticket), make your way from Roches to the ferry port at Rosslare, from where you can sail serenely on to Fishguard and Pembroke in Wales, or to Cherbourg or Roscoff in la belle France.
