General

  • Well-maintained and friendly site with spectacular views of Bannow Bay
  • Horse and pony trekking available from the site
  • Dog-friendly

Apart from winning the lottery, there probably aren't many things more blissful than a horsey canter along an Irish beach. If this too is you, you're well placed to sort it at Wexford's Roches Campervan and Campsite, as it's right on the Bannow estuary and the site owners run a horse and pony trekking centre alongside their working dairy farm.

You might not be able to imagine many views more blissful than over the sea from Roches either – perhaps a view of a winning lottery ticket...? And the site also has direct access to the bay: it's in the sunny south-east of Ireland with loads of beaches and historical sites nearby.

Base yourself here for fab flat and bass fishing in the estuary too, and walks along it, and splendid Wexford beaches, and old old sites like Tintern Abbey and the Clonmines castles... Pubs, a chemist, two supermarkets, a tyre centre and hair salons are at the local village of Wellingtonbridge a short drive away.

Roches has a shower and toilet block, internet access, charging facilities and chemical disposal. Barbecues and campfires are allowed, but if you're too blissed out/knackered after your horse ride to sort supper, trot along to one of the several nearby pubs serving tasty feed – trad Irish music sessions are often on the menu too.

The site is 45 minutes from Rosslare if you're off to/from Europe and want an overnight stay.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

A charge of €1 applies for the use of shower.

On the shore of the estuary, this simple pitch was idyllic.

Really friendly owners, clean and tidy wash/WC facilities.

Great location for Wexford/Waterford and the Hook Lighthouse all of which we visited.

    Really enjoyable.

The site is in a beautiful area and well positioned with amazing views.

    Disliked:

The farm dogs are allowed to roam and there was dog faeces everywhere. This was not acceptable especially as I cleaned up after my own dog!!
Also the toilet and shower facilities seem to be in someones bathroom.

From the manager...

We do clean up after our dogs also our toilet & shower facilities are not in anyone's accommodation we own it and is only for the use of our camper guests.

No option for campers without own toilet 05/09/2017

You have a nice view from the campsite.

    Disliked:

The main problem is that there are no real facilities for campers. When we asked for the toilet on arrival we were told that we have to wait until 5 o'clock since she does not have the key (mind this is not a real camping ground). At half past 6 we still couldn't use the toilet... When the door was finally open at 7 o'clock it turned out that the "facilities" were actually someone elses home, which felt very awkward indeed (although the resident was very welcoming and told us we could use his toilet and shower any time).
There is a small cottage with a bathroom that can be used by campers if it is not rented (as in our case).

They also do pony trekking (Clonmines Pony Trekking), but if it is not the first time on a horse for you, this is also very disappointing: The one hour trek costs 25,-€ (for kids and adults), but if you do a bit of light trotting in between, you are back about half an hour later, but it costs 25,-€ nevertheless... And for half an hour riding it's far to expensive.
Besides, the trekking is done by kids. Our "guide" told us, that he started riding at the beginning of the summer holidays. Before he was afraid of horses...

From the manager...

Thank you for your bad review and I am very disappointed as none of this was discussed with me Margaret I checked this German family of 5 in and the toilet issue was sorted and at no time had they no use of a toilet and the lady did say she was not happy using the facilities in our or are facilities in our farm apartment the same lady came to our home on the evening they arrived said they would only stay the one evening with us (were booked in with us for 2 nights) because of the toilet facilities and I assured her the facilities for the camper vans and campers will be ready the next morning and I had no problem if they wanted to move on they never came back to tell me that they were staying on the second night the only way I knew was there tent was still up I passed them during there stay and was polite to all family members tried to speak to the children as they loved our new pup they had little English and I have no German so I made sure to give them a big smile when we met that evening I went down to check all ok and reply was yes thank you and the man was cooking dinner on the cooker and the family looked very at home so for €20 for a family of 5 with cooking facilities, toilet & shower and heating it is not bad value and all we are meant to provide is toilet & shower facilities, again giving them the opportunity to complain of the facilities and the pony trekking which I would have been able to do something about too late when your gone I take these reviews seriously but when I gave a personal service to do my best to make there visit as good as possible.

La vue sur une petite baie. L'isolement.

    Disliked:

Loved the park up location, right on the edge is the most peaceful estuary imaginable, with the sounds of the tide and the gentle warbling of the sea birds. Perfect location for walks and cycling, the Tintern Abbey is beautiful. Lovely homely bathroom facilities and the added bonus of the friendly farm dogs. Really friendly welcoming family, really enjoyed our time there.

Local attractions

The ruin of 13th-century Tintern Abbey (not the Wordsworth one) is one of many old sites to see in Co Wexford and its surrounds. See also Hook Lighthouse at nearby Hook Head, the oldest working lighthouse in the world, and 16th-century Duncannon Fort with its maritime museum.

Several towns and villages are around Bannow Bay (although do go fishing first): pedal or potter around the likes of Saltmills, Newtown, Ballygow, Ballyowen and the splendidly named Haggard Bridge to carefully compare the Guinness in each.
