  • Spacious and comfy three-bedroom caravan in the Ox Mountains
  • A 10-minute drive from Foxford and half an hour from Castlebar
  • Self-contained unit with bathroom and well-equipped kitchen
Perhaps you’re heading out into the Ox Mountains in search of hikes, bike rides and days of fishing… or maybe you’re just in the market for a chilled-out stay in a scenic and peaceful part of the world. Either way, Attymachugh Lodge should make an excellent base for your stay. This spacious static caravan is in the Co. Mayo countryside about 10 minutes’ drive from the village of Foxford, with gorgeous views all around (particularly fine at sunset) and very little noise to disturb your peace. It’s a handy location for all sorts of outdoor pursuits in the mountains, but it’s also somewhere that you could easily choose to do very little other than hang out and enjoy the scenery right there around your temporary home. With three bedrooms inside, the lodge sleeps up to six people and is therefore a good bet for a family holiday or a getaway with a group of pals (no dogs here though, please). It’s an entirely self-contained unit with its own bathroom and kitchen (including a cooker, fridge, microwave and washing machine/tumble dryer) and bed linen and towels provided. Lots of other touches contribute to a cosy and comfy stay here, including central heating, a fireplace and a lounge area with TV and sofas. There are some lovely views out of the windows, but on a fine day you’ll probably want to head outside to make use of the outdoor furniture for your meals or drinks with a splendid surround-sound take on the scenery.

Local attractions

Hiking and bike routes are all around in this mountainous area, so there should be something to suit your abilities and requirements. A good place to start is the collection of circular walks running from Foxford (10 minutes’ drive); it’s also a fine idea to get a taste of the area’s past with a stroll along the Foxford Heritage Trail from Foxford Woollen Mills (10 minutes). If it’s other pursuits you’re after, how about fishing in the River Moy between Foxford and Ballina (25 minutes), playing golf in Swinford (15 minutes) or going horse riding (25 minutes). If all that sounds a little too active, perhaps you’d rather take a drive on part of the Wild Atlantic Way, or just wander along Enniscrone Beach (35 minutes). For urban strolls your best bets are either Castlebar (half an hour) or Sligo (50 minutes); sticking to the rural surroundings you could take a tour of Belleek Castle or learn about the area’s history at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life (both 25 minutes). A tour of Connacht Distillery (25 minutes) is likely to be a tasty option too…
