  • Wild camping site in a scenic location on the edge of Ferrew Bog
  • A 15-minute drive from Lough Conn; Ballycastle beach 20 minutes
  • Wildlife haven home to deer, foxes, pine martens and birdlife
Set in a pretty part of Ireland's County Mayo on the edge of the nature-rich Ferrew Bog, Blanemore Wild Camping is a small wild camping site located midway between the waters of Lough Conn and the west coast. This very peaceful spot is a real nature haven, home to a wide variety of animals, birds and wildflowers. It's also a mere 400 yards from Blanemore Forest, a great spot for quiet rambles through scenic woodlands and an ancient archeological site. The camping field is spacious and well set up for wildlife watching, taking in sunsets and astronomy after the skies have turned dark. The facilities on offer are simple, with just a camping shower and a portable toilet. What water is available is collected from rainfall, and power is supplied by solar and wind energy. This is a remote location, but the nearest convenience store is five minutes' drive away in Moygownagh. As well as selling groceries, the shop has a deli counter with hot and cold food, a petrol station and hardware supplies. The larger towns of Crossmolina (10 minutes) and Ballycastle (20 minutes) are other nearby options for picking up supplies, and neither is short of cafés and pubs.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Host was very friendly and accommodating.

Disliked: The site is on a bog so the pitching sites are mostly saturated. In fairness there was also heavy rain.

From the manager: So sorry you did not fully enjoy your stay with us. Unfortunately you arrived at the same time Storm Betty did and after the summer we have had the ground was already saturated. I did point out to you before you arrived the ground was already wet but you still wanted to stay. When you arrived again I said storm Betty is heading in that night and you were still happy to stay. I checked your pitch after you left and the turf has not broken up so considering the weather conditions and your 3 night stay the Boglands faired well !

Brilliant little spot, out the way and has everything you could need.…

Local attractions

The surrounding area has lots of quiet lanes for walking or cycling. Watersports enthusiasts will also find themselves with plenty of good options nearby, including sandy beaches at Lacken Strand and Ballycastle (both 20 minutes' drive) and Lough Conn's Gortnor Abbey pier, where you can launch small boats or paddleboards and take in views over Nephin mountain in the distance. For outdoor pursuits a little further afield, there's also the spectacular Great Western Greenway (45 minutes), a 40-kilometre cycling and walking route that traverses the west coast between Westport and Achill Island – and the whole thing's free of cars. Also well worth visiting for rambles is the area around the scenic village of Cong down on the border with Galway (an hour and 20 minutes) where Oscar-winning movie 'The Quiet Man' was shot. For history-themed days, you could start with the archeological site by Blanemore Forest (within a short walk of the site) before progressing on to check out the Céide Fields (half an hour), a Stone Age site on the coast. If you find yourself further to the south, make sure to explore the Croagh Patrick Visitor Centre (an hour and five minutes), which tells the story of Saint Patrick's pilgrimage to the summit of a nearby mountain.
