  • Farm eco-campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Inchigeelagh in County Cork
  • Skibbereen 35 minutes’ drive; Killarney National Park an hour
  • Shared living room; communal kitchen and picnic area with pizza oven
County Cork bound? If you like the sound of a quiet getaway on a small, back-to-nature campsite, but rather fancy some amenities so you don’t have to rough it too much, then take a look at Bilberry Boreen Campsite, 10 minutes’ drive from Inchigeelagh. Here you can choose your own pitch among wildflower meadows and woodland on a farm that is in the process of being re-wilded. There are spectacular rural views everywhere you look, and the peaceful vibe has an emphasis firmly on appreciation of the wildlife around you. Now back to those amenities… and there are quite a few. Tucked away in the corner of a meadow is a shower block, plus a shared kitchen with all basics like cooking oils, herbs, tea, coffee and sugar – in short pretty much everything you need for the basics of cooking a meal or making a brew. A covered area with a barbecue and pizza oven is a few steps away, with a picnic table just outside so you can serve your meals with a view. Should the weather play nasty, you can retreat to the comfy sofas in the communal living area, where you can borrow books and games to keep all ages entertained. There are electricity sockets there for charging your devices, but otherwise – this being ‘almost’ wild camping – everything is off grid.

Liked: Facilities were superb. Host was friendly and very accommodating. Hot showers, well equipped kitchen and we enjoyed the games area as it came in quite handy when the weather was poorly. Will definitely be back!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We brought a four man tent and pitched up in the meadow on the hill - the views were gorgeous, and we had the best view of the milky way and a few shooting stars. Lizzie is brilliant, we brought our grumpy little jack russell with us and she was so good with him, he even had a run around with her own two dogs. The facilities are perfect - very well equipped campers kitchen, very clean toilets with compost system. All very eco friendly. We absolutely loved the peacefulness of this place and would highly recommend. We will definitely be returning.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Incredibly peaceful location. Gentle country views from the field we camped in. I found the gentle sound from the turbines lulled me to sleep! Lots of space to pick a nice camping spot. Close to Inchigeelagh lake for kayaking. We didn’t use the kitchen but it looked as if it had all that you would need. The covered outdoor sitting area would be a great place to sit if the weather wasn’t good or for some shade. The shower area was immaculate and the hottest shower we had used in our experience of campsites this year. The compost toilet has instructions for use inside the cubicle on the wall. I would suggest having them in large print in other areas and outside the toilet to enable new users to understand how to use it before they go in.

Disliked: Nothing!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: I really liked the peaceful location and how accomodating the host Liz was. The amenities were pretty DIY but Liz put a lot of effort into making everything as functional and comfortable as possible. The only thing that might be a bit of a deciding factor for some was the toilet facilities are compost toilets. For me it wasn't an issue and they were well set up. The other amenities, hot showers, kitchen with outlets to charge a phone or battery were standard and clean. Lots of herbs and spices in the kitchen for cooking as well :) there was also a bbq and a games room which i didn't use but they looked great! The meadow where I pitched my tent was on a bit of a hill but it was quiet so i had my pick of a flat spot. There was another tent pitch area which I didn't see so there may have been lots of flat spots available. It looks like it could be nice for a chill group camp and bbq evening.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely atmosphere and the owner, Lizzie was very friendly, helpful and eco-minded, which we really appreciated. Great to have a fully equipped kitchen and large field where we could pitch anywhere and have lots of privacy. Everything was very clean and well stocked.

Disliked: Location a bit remote and needs a good Sat Nav to find. Could do with more washing facilities and places to sit. Compost toilets were not that easy to use.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The campsite is eco-friendly, very clean and well maintained. Owner Lizzie is extremely helpful and her dogs are very friendly, our children loved them (ok, me too!). We were lucky enough to be there on an evening that Lizzie fired up the pizza oven, much enjoyed by children, and parents that didn't have to cook! Well thought out facilities, especially useful if the weather is poor. Beautiful site, good phone reception despite remote location. The campsite feels like Lizzie has done a lot of travelling and therefore considers all of the small details that make camping at her site a more comfortable experience.

Local attractions

Pretty local towns to visit include Dunmanway (15 minutes's drive), with its brightly coloured cottages – here fans of Gaelic football can visit the grave of Sam Maguire on a self-guided tour of the town. For more insight into Irish history, visit Skibbereen (35 minutes) to learn about the Great Irish Famine of the 1840s in the Heritage Centre. To get to know coastal West Cork, make for Clonakilty (half an hour) and laze on the beach at Inchydoney (40 minutes), or drive sections of the Wild Atlantic Way along the untamed shoreline. Bilberry Boreen is also a handy base for exploring the stunning lakes and oak forest of Killarney National Park, having a stroll around the estate at Killarney House and Gardens (both an hour), or taking to the multitude of hilly trails on foot or by bike. If you’d rather stick closer to home on your expeditions, there are wild moorland walks in the Nowen Hill Forest or Warrenscourt Forest recreational areas (both 20 minutes).
