Dreaming of a beach break? It’s quite possible you could be imagining yourself at Western Cape’s Imhoff Caravan Park, on the Cape Peninsula around 40 minutes’ drive from the centre of Cape Town. The beach in question is the aptly-named Long Beach, a lengthy and handsome stretch of powdery white sand with waves that should get the nod of approval from surf seekers. Best of all, it’s mere minutes away on foot (although there are plenty of other pretty places nearby if you’re after somewhere to stretch your legs a bit more). And what’s the perfect finale for such a day? A braai, of course – and such things are not only permitted but actively encouraged here, as each pitch has built-in braai facilities (all you need do is bring along a grid, wood and charcoal). Pick up supplies in Kommetjie, 20 minutes’ walk away (or a couple of minutes in the car) – or stick around in town for bars and restaurants if you’d prefer to leave the cooking to someone else. Time on site can also be spent playing table tennis or pool, or kicking back in the comfy TV room (or scrambling around at the playground for the tiddlers). Everyday tasks are covered too, with a laundry room, washing-up area and bathroom blocks with toilets and showers.

Local attractions

You’ll easily fill a good number of days on and around the Cape Peninsula… aside from the beach right by your place, it’s worth stopping by at Noordhoek beach (15 minutes’ drive) and the famed Boulders Beach (25 minutes), a must-see for its cute colony of African penguins. Keep going south, south, south and you’ll get to the Cape of Good Hope (the very tip of the African continent) in about 40 minutes or so. Turning attentions north instead, you might like to putt a few balls about on the golf course at Clovelly Country Club (20 minutes), wander along the extensive and gorgeous trails at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden (35 minutes) or meet some exotic critters at World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary & Monkey Park (40 minutes). A little further north again are, of course, Cape Town and Table Mountain National Park (both around 40 minutes’ drive). A day in town might include visits to the District Six Museum, Nelson Mandela’s former prison on Robben Island and wanders in the colourful Bo-Kaap area – along with a cable car ride up Table Mountain to take it all in from on high.
