  • Tree-filled site 10 minutes' walk from the beach in Cavo
  • A 40-minute drive from Portoferraio and Napoleon's Villa dei Mulini
  • Restaurant, crêperie, bar, fitness trail and free guided canoe tours
Poor old Napoleon – exiled to the island of Elba, what with all its gorgeous beaches, shimmering turquoise waters, fab seafood and stunning sunsets… Dock in at Elbadoc Camping Village, up at the island’s north-eastern tip just outside the village of Cavo, and it’s likely you’ll not be planning to mount an escape from such a spectacular spot. Take the fast ferry from the mainland and it’s about a 15-minute walk to the site, which is 700 metres from the seafront (and a sandy beach) in a valley full of native trees – eucalyptus, olive trees and maritime pines all provide both shade and a waft of fragrance around the place. Bikes can be hired on site to get out and see the surrounds, and guests can join free guided canoe tours or book various excursions (snorkelling, trekking and the like) by having a chat with the folk on site. Time spent on site might be filled with games of table tennis or table football or keeping an eye on the kids as they scramble about at the playground; in summer they may well get spirited away for various activities (allowing grownups the chance to slope off for a snooze or, at the opposite end of the spectrum, join fellow guests on the fitness trail). As you’re on hols, it’s fair to suggest that a certain amount of time be dedicated to eats and drinks too – they’re easily catered for on site, as there’s a restaurant, crêperie, bar and takeaway service as well as a mini market stocked with various essentials.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Electric optional hardstanding and grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Electric optional hardstanding and grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Niets!

Local attractions

The beaches on Elba are quite simply stunning, and plentiful too – there are around 70 of them scattered around the coast. The nearest one, in Cavo, has both free and serviced areas along its sandy stretch; head a little further north (five minutes’ drive from the site) to Cala delle Alghe for watersports including jetskiing and snorkel trips. If you want to see a bit deeper down into the sea, a scuba diving centre is about half an hour away. Scoot around several beaches and you may note that there are some colourful sands around here – golden, black and red beaches can all be found on the east coast thanks to the rich supply of minerals in the ground. It’s not in action any more, but the mine at Ginevro (an hour and 15 minutes) is still preserved for guests to get a glimpse of life underground. Back up on the surface, it’s worth pottering around Portoferraio (40 minutes) to see the old seafront bastions, and the Villa dei Mulini, a Medici palace that Napoleon busied himself restoring during his banishment.
