  • Quiet site set on the Rhine’s banks with views over to Switzerland
  • Just south of the Black Forest, a 10-minute drive to Waldshut-Tiengen
  • Restaurant and wifi; public pool, miniature golf and playground nearby
Relish resting right by the Rhine while on a retreat at Rhein-Camping Waldshut, a family-run site on the southern outskirts of the Black Forest looking out over the rushing river towards the stunning scenery of Switzerland on the other side. Just beside the water, separated by neat hedges, colourful flowers and a walking path, this is one well-located spot in the Waldshut district of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. Boat trips and fishing are close by (have a chat with staff if you fancy bobbing about or angling on the Rhine) and the site is close to public amenities including an outdoor pool edged by a spacious sunbathing area, a miniature golf course with river views and a playground. But that’s not to say the park’s lacking its own facilities… oh no. The Restaurant Rhein-Perle and its beer garden mean there’s no need to go far for fodder (make sure to order the Black Forest specialities and a chilled local beer), and wifi’s available at an extra charge to help keep you connected with the outside world. The usual suspects, like showers, toilets, a washing-up area and a launderette open 24 hours a day, are all here too. After a morning bread roll ordered the night before, whizz along the path fronting the river with the wind in your hair on one of the park’s e-bike rentals or simply meander on foot with a four-legged pal (dogs are welcomed on site), stopping to dip your toes in the water every now and again.

Local attractions

For getaways from the site, Waldshut-Tiengen (10 minutes’ drive) has a historic old town and is your gateway to wanders in the Black Forest and Rhine valley. It’s also packed with attractions and amenities – head here for an indoor swimming pool with a sauna and solarium, a go-kart track and laser games. To ride on the river directly from the park, climb aboard a boat close to the grounds to be whisked to where the Aare and Rhine waterways meet with views over to Switzerland and Waldshut-Tiengen along the way. Post-sail, swim at the Schluchsee reservoir (50 minutes’ drive north) or glide down the slides at the Aqua Fun theme park. A few minutes further on is Wutach Gorge for roams in this spectacular forested valley. For views that are just as epic, go north again to the Feldberg area and scurry up the steps to the top of the communications tower (an hour and 10 minutes) for panoramas of mountain peaks. The House of Nature Feldberg museum is worth stopping by too for the interactive displays on conservation enroute.
