Adventure Camping: Camping in North Devon

General

  • Laidback family site, among hill and coast views
  • A five-minute drive to Westward Ho! beach; 15 minutes to Barnstaple
  • 35-acre site within walking distance of pub and Big Sheep theme park

Adventure Camping is a spacious site in the grounds of the Ultimate Adventure Centre, a mile and a half from the centre of Bideford and in the scenic surrounds of comely Devon countryside (with views both up to the hills and over to the coast).

This is a splendid spot to settle in for lots of Devon hotspots: you can walk to the Big Sheep theme park (or stroll to the local pub, five minutes away…) and a short drive gets you to places like Westward Ho! beach or to Barnstaple to hit the Tarka Trail. And of course you'll want to allocate some time to the fab range of antics organised by the site: a number of different adventure activities will be available to book during your stay, including climbing, high ropes, an assault course, kayaking and paddleboarding.

There’s a whopping 35 acres of space to play with here, so plenty of scope to play games, take strolls around the lake or light up a barbecue or firepit to chat with pals. Dogs are welcome on site so feel free to bring them along for your Devon break here.

    Awesome lodges

Great friendly welcome and informative (James or Jamie on arrival)

    No Wi-fi....

    Disliked:

More information needed on what to bring as couldn't find anything about bedding on website. Message sent via fb messenger and email and no reply received until we'd already left (although it was on our welcome pack).

On our departure I found at least 3 pairs of knickers and some socks that were under different mattresses as I cleaned up.

Plug hole in the shower had not been cleaned and was thick with hair

Possibly have some sort of table or seating within the room.

    Maybe a mirror

We loved our holiday at Adventure Camping! The accommodation was much better than the images on the site and the outside decking was the perfect place to spend an evening overlooking the lake.

Our teenage kids loved the water assault course and high ropes - the highlight of the holiday - and are already asking to go back before the end of the year!

The staff were so friendly and helpful and the site was very dog friendly too.

The location is fantastic- in the middle of gorgeous countryside and yet also a few miles from the country's most stunning beaches!

This was a gem of a find for us and we will be returning!

We absolutely love the Ultimate Adventure Centre.
The accommodation is perfect for our large family of 7, everything is clean and well maintained.
The staff are very friendly and welcoming.
The activities are second to none and loved by our older children, whilst the younger ones love a visit down the road to the big sheep. But they also all love the open space and ability to play outdoors.
The location is perfect for exploring the North Devon coast and then ending the day back at the adventure centre with a glass of wine whilst the kids play.
We can't wait for our next visit.
Thank you so much Russ and the team.

Local attractions

Adventure Camping is in the small village of Abbotsham, niftily placed for the best of Devon attractions and the nearby beaches of day trips to Croyde, Woolacombe, Westward Ho! and other Devon beaches.

Less than half an hour's drive will see you at Saunton Sands, the eminently suitable surfing beach, and Braunton Burrows, the eminently spectacular sand dune system that's the biggest in England. Botany and nature buffs will find over 400 species of vascular plants and several rare species here; take a guided walk for the easiest way to spot.

Closer to home, on the edge of the Taw Torridge Estuary and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Northam Burrows Country Park is a smaller but still very viewsome option for nature walks among its sand dunes, salt marsh and grassland. Access it from the beach at Westward Ho! and drop in at the visitor centre at the northern end of the beach, open to the public in summer.

Heavenly hikes on the South West Coast Path are just a mile away, and nearby Bideford has two of Devon's toppest attractions for kids and families, the Milky Way Adventure Park and The Big Sheep.

See also the fishing village of Clovelly along the coast to the south west, a day out among the greenery of RHS Rosemoor, another among the waves of surfing spot Woolacombe, or a drive to Dartmoor for yet more outdoorsy activities: you're on an adventure, after all…

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (6.9 miles)
  • Castle Drogo (29.1 miles)

  • Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (14.3 miles)
