  • The Ultimate Adventure Centre on site: zipwires, kayaking, surfing...
  • Views of the Devon hills and north Devon coastline

Wheeeee! Adventure sorts, you're sorted. Adventure Camping is a campsite right behind the Ultimate Adventure Centre near Bideford in Devon, where there's all manner of adrenalising activities to try – and all in the scenic surroundings of comely Devon countryside and hills with views of the Devon coast.

What's promised as 'the ultimate assault course' is laid on at the adventure centre, alongside other active options like coasteering, laser tag, body zorbing, mountain boarding, kayaking, a surf school, climbing wall, and high ropes, low ropes and a zipwire. Families, stag parties and hen dos are all welcome and the campsite is dog-friendly. Showers, loos and washing facilities are all available too.

Great potential as a site and facilities but not great experience yet 09/03/2018

The ultimate assault course was great and worth paying for. Accommodation and shower facilities are very good for price. Pub - the Flying Pig nearby was lovely food.

    Disliked:

The site advertises it welcomes large groups and stags/ hens. However, we were given a “final warning” and treated like children rather than a group of adults for talking in the cabin (also stared at as we walked back to the cabin) We were aware of keeping the noise down and making a conscious effort, so this was insulting as we felt we couldn’t socialise on site. Also, the night staff who was on duty, decided to stay in the cabin right next to us despite the rest of the cabins being free. This did improve after we provided feedback. Cafe was well equipped but lack of staff on duty so we used a lot less than we would have. Cabins are also very hot and so we weren’t able to sleep without opening both doors- would be good to have fans.

The campsite was lovely, we really liked the layout and the fact that there was so much to do. The weather stopped us being able to do what we wanted but we still really enjoyed our stay. The showers were so warm which we needed because it was so cold and rainy outside!! And the shower cubicles were huge. The showers and toilets were clean and there was always enough toilet paper and soap etc. The staff were excellent, all really friendly and approachable and helpful. We didn’t get chance to try the café but it was conveniently located near our pitch. We had a few people around our pitch but we were all perfectly spaced out. The pitch was really level and it was really easy to set the tent up. I was extremely comfortable and slept all night which I usually struggle with when camping!! It was really cheap to stay here, we didn’t go for an electric hookup but we didn’t find we needed one. I came down to Devon to visit the place I grew up. I would highly recommend this campsite!!

    Disliked:

The only thing I would change is that the toilet block was quite a walk from our pitch. But this didn’t really bother us, and the amount of good things about this site fully outweigh the bad!

Paid for a hook up pitch in our caravan but got upgraded to one of their log cabins that sleep 14. Excited about this but All bunk beds so we slept in our caravan still. Inside log cabin very basic, toilet seat hanging off, no plug sockets low so struggled to find somewhere to plug kettle & toaster in hence why they were just dumped on top of the fridge freezer I guess. No chairs inside and not very clean. No hot water coming through small dink in bathroom and due to sink size totally impossible to fill up the kettle or a simple water bottle. Not sure how much they charge for this accomadation but not worth a great deal.

Fantastic, enthusiastic staff on hand at all times. We were given a free upgrade the night before we left. The weather was turning for the worst so the let us pack away early and stay in one of there ausome huts. Only 5 minute drive to Westward Ho beach front where there are so many thing to do (adult or children). Facilities are more than adequate for camping.

    Disliked:

Mabe if someone was a light sleeper you could argue that it's a tad close to the main road. The wasn't an issue for our group.

I would definitely recommend 'adventure camping' we have just stayed there for a week and it was so quiet even though it was an activity site.
The showers and toilets were always clean and very spacious.
The staff there were super helpful (even bought round complimentary coffee one morning). Russ was great also, he let us play a game of golf Frisbee one evening and everyone mucked in. Also on our last couple of days the weather started to take a turn for the worse so Russ let us upgrade to one of the Atlantic lodges, let's just say we didn't know which beds to choose from being only two of us.
All in all a great stay and we would definitely return.

    Disliked:

Noise from the main road but this can't be helped. Nothing a pair of earplugs can't sort out.

    Getting involved in events available.

    Disliked:

Facilities not well maintained in areas some showers not working and washing up facilities giving only cold water.
Place looks a little barren and univiting and is overpriced if only being used for basic hook up.

From Cornwall, take the A39 past Bude towards Bideford. You will drive past Hartland and Clovelly. Look out for the brown Ultimate Adventure Centre signs on the A39 just outside Bideford.

By bus
The only bus which passes The Ultimate Adventure Centre is the 319 Stagecoach bus from Barnstaple town centre to Hartland. The nearest bus stop is outside the church in Abbotsham, which is approximately 2- 3 minutes' walk from the site. However, if you ask the driver nicely, they usually stop outside the car park to drop you off.

Local attractions

Adventure Camping is in the small village of Abbotsham, niftily placed for the best of Devon attractions and the nearby beaches of day trips to Croyde, Woolacombe, Westward Ho! and other Devon beaches.

Less than half an hour's drive will see you at Saunton Sands, the eminently suitable surfing beach, and Braunton Burrows, the eminently spectacular sand dune system that's the biggest in England. Botany and nature buffs will find over 400 species of vascular plants and several rare species here; take a guided walk for the easiest way to spot.

Closer to home, on the edge of the Taw Torridge Estuary and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Northam Burrows Country Park is a smaller but still very viewsome option for nature walks among its sand dunes, salt marsh and grassland. Access it from the beach at Westward Ho! and drop in at the visitor centre at the northern end of the beach, open to the public in summer.

Heavenly hikes on the South West Coast Path are just a mile away, and nearby Bideford has two of Devon's toppest attractions for kids and families, the Milky Way Adventure Park and The Big Sheep.

See also the fishing village of Clovelly along the coast to the south-west, a day out among the greenery of RHS Rosemoor, another among the waves of surfing spot Woolacombe, or a drive to Dartmoor for yet more outdoorsy activities: you're on an adventure camping trip after all…

Must see
