Adventure Camping: View of the campsite, the cabins and the lake

General

  • Laidback Devon family site with adventure activities to book
  • A five-minute drive to Westward Ho! beach; 15 minutes to Barnstaple
  • 35-acre site within walking distance of pub and Big Sheep theme park

Adventure Camping is a spacious site in the grounds of the Inspiring Learning North Devon Centre, a mile and a half from the centre of Bideford and in the scenic surrounds of comely Devon countryside (with views both up to the hills and over to the coast).

This is a splendid spot to settle in for lots of Devon hotspots: you can walk to the Big Sheep theme park (or stroll to the local pub, five minutes away…) and a short drive gets you to places like Westward Ho! beach or to Barnstaple to hit the Tarka Trail.

And of course you'll want to allocate some time to the fab range of antics organised by the site: a number of different adventure activities will be available to book during your stay, including climbing, high ropes, an assault course, kayaking and paddleboarding (please use the requests section on your booking if you'd like to enquire in advance about these).

There’s a whopping 35 acres of space to play with here, so plenty of scope to play games, take strolls around the lake or light up a barbecue or firepit to chat with pals. Dogs are welcome on site so feel free to bring them along for your Devon break here.

Me and my friends camped here for one night in our cars so it was lovely to be Abel to park next to each other. The toilets & showers were lovely & clean, and the camp was clean and quiet! Fabulous activities for the kids to do (aged 9 and 13). Kept them entertained onsite and a great location for us to head to the beach and also take the bikes to the Tarka trail (although pretty hilly getting there and back!)
Supermarkets/petrol/mcds etc only 3-4mins drive away and the Thatched Inn pub is within walking distance and well worth a visit!
We stayed in one of the lakeside lodges which was perfect for what we were looking for....a bit more comfort than a tent with its own shower, toilet, sink and bunk beds, but then brought the rest of our camping stuff for cooking food etc. We used one of the spare bunk bed mattresses as a 'sofa' in the communal area but if you're more organised than us, bring your camping chairs for indoors....there's a picnic bench for outside 😄

    Disliked:

Shop had opening times but wasn't always open during these times. Not a major issue for us as we had everything we needed, just fancied an ice-cream and couldn't get one as it was closed when it said it should be open.

Location was great , nearby the coast and the Big Sheep for the young children .

    Disliked:

Opted to stay in the BunkBed Lodge , which wasnt the cleanest , which was fine as Adventure Camping is about adventure . However, the rodent which visited our room was a bit too much for the kids , and most disappointing , on check out we mentioned our little visitor and they didnt seem concerned or apologetic , almost as it should be expected . Personally, i wouldnt eat there with such activity and you dont expect such a flippant response to what can be a health issue or an unpleasant experience

From the manager...

Hello, thank you for you review.

This it is quite surprising to read and our sincerest apologies that you did not get the response from our team member that you desired. Customer service is a priority here, and the team are trained to calmly help. Be assured that your feedback was reported immediately and then escalated in the proper way.

We are situated on and surrounded by farm land and so it would be no surprise that wildlife is spotted at times. For your information we do have all of this under control and are satisfied with this.

Our team member, when reporting the above commented on how polite you had been about it. Note* Maybe if you had of reported it during your stay then we would have most certainly have given you and your family alternative accommodation in one of our other 20+ lodges.

It would be lovely for you to visit again and not feel that this experience is something that is common here.

Have a great summer!

From the manager...

Thank you for this feedback. A child's play area is definitely something that we want to build here as we grow, so watch this space :)

As for the breakfast, it would be good to learn more about this if you would not mind emailing us more information to Centre.ND@inspiring-Learning.com

The only bus which passes The Ultimate Adventure Centre is the 319 Stagecoach bus from Barnstaple town centre to Hartland. The nearest bus stop is outside the church in Abbotsham, which is approximately 2- 3 minutes' walk from the site. However, if you ask the driver nicely, they usually stop outside the car park to drop you off.

Local attractions

Adventure Camping is in the small village of Abbotsham, niftily placed for the best of Devon attractions and the nearby beaches of day trips to Croyde, Woolacombe, Westward Ho! and other Devon beaches.

Less than half an hour's drive will see you at Saunton Sands, the eminently suitable surfing beach, and Braunton Burrows, the eminently spectacular sand dune system that's the biggest in England. Botany and nature buffs will find over 400 species of vascular plants and several rare species here; take a guided walk for the easiest way to spot.

Closer to home, on the edge of the Taw Torridge Estuary and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Northam Burrows Country Park is a smaller but still very viewsome option for nature walks among its sand dunes, salt marsh and grassland. Access it from the beach at Westward Ho! and drop in at the visitor centre at the northern end of the beach, open to the public in summer.

Heavenly hikes on the South West Coast Path are just a mile away, and nearby Bideford has two of Devon's toppest attractions for kids and families, the Milky Way Adventure Park and The Big Sheep.

See also the fishing village of Clovelly along the coast to the south west, a day out among the greenery of RHS Rosemoor, another among the waves of surfing spot Woolacombe, or a drive to Dartmoor for yet more outdoorsy activities: you're on an adventure, after all…

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (6.9 miles)
  • Castle Drogo (29.1 miles)
