Adventure Camping: Camping pitches

General

  • Laidback family site, among hill and coast views
  • A five-minute drive to Westward Ho! beach; 15 minutes to Barnstaple
  • 35-acre site within walking distance of pub and Big Sheep theme park

Adventure Camping is a spacious site in the grounds of the Ultimate Adventure Centre, a mile and a half from the centre of Bideford and in the scenic surrounds of comely Devon countryside (with views both up to the hills and over to the coast).

This is a splendid spot to settle in for lots of Devon hotspots: you can walk to the Big Sheep theme park (or stroll to the local pub, five minutes away…) and a short drive gets you to places like Westward Ho! beach or to Barnstaple to hit the Tarka Trail. And of course you'll want to allocate some time to the fab range of antics organised by the site: a number of different adventure activities will be available to book during your stay, including climbing, high ropes, an assault course, kayaking and paddleboarding.

There’s a whopping 35 acres of space to play with here, so plenty of scope to play games, take strolls around the lake or light up a barbecue or firepit to chat with pals. Dogs are welcome on site so feel free to bring them along for your Devon break here.

The site looks like it's been done up, and clean, lovely big pitches. Instant hot water for the showers. Washing facilities, The fact we had the whole site to ourselves. Drinking water taps dotted around and a Chemical toilet which is very handy.

    Disliked:

No-one was there to greet us and show us where we had to go, No-one picked up the out of hours number when phoned, so we just pitched out of the way where we thought was best. The shower heads were fixed so couldn't adjust, No shelf in the showers to put toiletries on. No plugs in the washing facilities for dishes. No hand dryers to dry hands after the loo.
Site map also needs updating, with the camping area names.

Great site - just needs details on website06/06/2022

  • Electric grass tent or campervan pitch
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

Big pitches, was able to swap round to be near other members of the party, nice airy (Covid friendly!) toilets, open and good views.

    Disliked:

Price was more for campervan without electric than tent pitch with electric - even though it was the same piece of grass! Adventure sport was not open and we booked it specifically for that. It was half term so everyone on training before school kids back again, but as we had booked for that it was misleading. It needs to be clear on the website when booking that it won't be available on specific dates. Canoes etc not locked up and no safety around the lakes, so I would be very worried about my children coming here for a school residential trip - as a parent and camping (and older kids) it was fine as I could watch them as I should.

From the manager...

hello, thank you for bringing some points to my attention, we are in the process of our website being fully redesigned, we are looking at the safety around the lake and ensuring the canoes are locked away, we hope you will come back and visit us again.

    Couldn't check-in until 5pm

From the manager...

Hello Aaron, Thank you for your review, I am very sorry you did not have a satisfactory stay with us, the smell of sewage has now been addressed by southwest water and we are looking into plans to have a small park for the children staying on-site, unfortunately during your stay, we did not have a bar/shop/cafe, we do now have a small shop open from 4.30 pm with UAC souvenirs, alcohol, sweets, snacks, ice creams etc. With regards to the cafe we had a flood in the kitchen, we do have plans to open it back up very soon.

Directions

By bus
The only bus which passes The Ultimate Adventure Centre is the 319 Stagecoach bus from Barnstaple town centre to Hartland. The nearest bus stop is outside the church in Abbotsham, which is approximately 2- 3 minutes' walk from the site. However, if you ask the driver nicely, they usually stop outside the car park to drop you off.

By train
The nearest train station is Barnstaple, approximately 10 miles away. From here, a taxi will cost around £20, or you can take the 319 bus which stops outside of the train station (details above).

Local attractions

Adventure Camping is in the small village of Abbotsham, niftily placed for the best of Devon attractions and the nearby beaches of day trips to Croyde, Woolacombe, Westward Ho! and other Devon beaches.

Less than half an hour's drive will see you at Saunton Sands, the eminently suitable surfing beach, and Braunton Burrows, the eminently spectacular sand dune system that's the biggest in England. Botany and nature buffs will find over 400 species of vascular plants and several rare species here; take a guided walk for the easiest way to spot.

Closer to home, on the edge of the Taw Torridge Estuary and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Northam Burrows Country Park is a smaller but still very viewsome option for nature walks among its sand dunes, salt marsh and grassland. Access it from the beach at Westward Ho! and drop in at the visitor centre at the northern end of the beach, open to the public in summer.

Heavenly hikes on the South West Coast Path are just a mile away, and nearby Bideford has two of Devon's toppest attractions for kids and families, the Milky Way Adventure Park and The Big Sheep.

See also the fishing village of Clovelly along the coast to the south west, a day out among the greenery of RHS Rosemoor, another among the waves of surfing spot Woolacombe, or a drive to Dartmoor for yet more outdoorsy activities: you're on an adventure, after all…
