General
- Small-scale site in a pub garden overlooking Byland Abbey
- Helmsley 10 minutes away by car; York 40 minutes
- Real ales on tap and food served; accessible by public transport
A pub garden with a daydream-inducing views over Gothic ruins is what's in store at Byland Abbey Inn. As a look at this North Yorkshire site's pics will attest, real ale and gorgeous abbey arches are something of a winning combination – a mix made all the more appealing when locally-sourced meals are added into the equation…
This family-run site is at the foot of the Hambleton Hills and on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, a top spot for all sorts of pedestrian jaunts (including a popular five-mile circular that you can join mere metres from the inn's front door). Byland Abbey also has a bus stop if you fancy getting out to other leg-stretching locales but don't feel like driving.
The facilities for those overnighting here include well-kept basics like toilets and showers. Inside the pub there are plenty of cosy nooks and crannies where you can settle down with a drink in your hand (and, if you've brought one, a dog at your feet), perhaps close to the wood-fired stove on chillier nights.
When the sun comes up the next day you can sip coffee and admire the abbey on the ample outdoor seating, take advantage of the fresh morning air to slink out into the hills, or tuck into a home-cooked Yorkshire breakfast – and you could, of course, get up to all three.
Helmsley (10 minutes' drive) is home to the nearest supermarket – there's a castle, arts centre and open-air pool here as well.

Local attractions
Visit-worthy ancient buildings in the area include Rievaulx Abbey (20 minutes' drive) and Helmsley Castle (10 minutes), both of which are English Heritage-run. At the risk of stating the obvious, it's also well worth strolling around Byland Abbey (a few minutes' walk) and giving the 12th-century ruins a proper gander – catch the moment when sunlight streams through the Gothic arches in the evening for some particularly impressive pics…
For more hot holiday snaps, get down to Yorkshire Lavender (20 minutes) – Provence it ain't, but this 60-acre hillside spot has lush lavender fields plus a plant shop and sculpture park (both of which can be visited in their own right when the flowers aren't in bloom). Other sites with flourishing floral gardens like Castle Howard (25 minutes) and RHS Harlow Carr (50 minutes) are also easy to reach.
Got kids to keep entertained? Try the slick steam trains at York's National Railway Museum or the gorier exhibits at York Dungeon (both 40 minutes).
