Wethercote Farm Campsite: Aerial view of the location

General

  • Small family campsite at a working farm in the North York Moors
  • Thirsk and Helmsley both 15 minutes’ drive; Castle Howard half an hour
  • Countryside views; walks to Rievaulx Abbey and Sutton Bank from site

It’s not often that you find a campsite with a gorgeous ruined abbey within walking distance, but Wethercote Farm Campsite is that rare beast. Surrounded by amazing open views, this relaxed and peaceful spot is an hour on foot from the atmospheric remains of Rievaulx Abbey.

The camping pitches are located on the fields of a beef, sheep and arable farm fringing the North York Moors National Park. There’s always plenty going on in neighbouring fields and there are lots of animals around, including Herdwick lambs in spring and the resident farm dogs. Because of the other animals, your well-behaved canine companions are welcome, but must be kept on a lead at all times.

Facilities around the camping fields include a shower and toilet block with hot running water, a washing-up shed and rubbish and recycling areas. Drinking water taps are scattered around the site and firepits are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The lovely market towns of Helmsley and Thirsk are both roughly 15 minutes’ drive away for stocking up on goodies from the supermarkets, and a short drive in pretty much any direction will lead you to a delightful country pub (often with a good food menu).

Please note

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Friendly relaxed atmosphere in a lovely setting.
    Clean facilities.
Listening to the owls at night.
    BBQ and firepit friendly

    Disliked:

This didn't affect us as it was quiet when we were there, but if it's busier there might be long waits for the showers. One shower is in the same cubicle as the toilet and the 2nd is adjacent to the compost toilets.

Lovely rural campsite with decent facilities and even wifi if needed. A "no music" policy ensures everyone gets peace and quiet. Sheep in the next field coming right up to the fence kept us entertained in the evenings. One flushing toilet and one composting toilet. 2 good showers plus a decent dish washing area. A 2 and a half mile walk from the Kilburn white horse visitor centre, from where numerous other walks start.

    Disliked:

Pitchup advertised ice pack freezing, but there wasn't a freezer. Not a major point but I was expecting one.

From the manager...

Hi thanks so much for the review and I'm so pleased you enjoyed your stay! I'm so sorry the information about freezer packs wasn't clear.... I freeze them for you at the house but my sign get damaged and I haven't replaced it.... I will get onto this straight away so it's clear how we work!
Thanks again

Good facilities, lovely washing up station with anything you could need and firepits available. Adorable little resident dog running around. Just a very relaxing place to be.

From the manager...

Hi Amy
Thank you for your review, I'm pleased you liked the site overall but it's such a shame you didn't see our lovely utility shed right next to the entrance and the shower block. It has everything you need in there from logs and tourist info to a large sink and draining area with as much hot water as you would need! We hope you come and stay again so we can show your our facilities are far from basic for a small Farm campsite!

Local attractions

Wethercote Farm Campsite is a handy overnight stop for hikers on the Cleveland Way National Trail (15 minutes’ walk), and within a five-minute drive you are at the top of steep Sutton Bank for views of the mid-19th-century chalk Kilburn White Horse; on clear day you’ll also have panoramas right across the Vale of York. At the Sutton Bank National Park Centre (five minutes’ drive), there’s a café, small store and bike hire as well as lots of visitor information about this spectacular part of the world.

You can walk to Rievaulx Abbey (an hour’s walk) for a wander around the lovely cloisters, and then move on to Rievaulx Terrace (another 20 minutes) for views back over the abbey grounds. York (50 minutes) is a treasure trove of history, from its Gothic Minster to the medieval cobbled street of The Shambles, lined with dinky souvenir shops.

There’s more history to be discovered at Castle Howard (half an hour), the setting for many a TV drama, with tours of the house and gardens designed by John Vanbrugh. Thirsk has also had its moment of TV fame as home of ‘The Yorkshire Vet’ documentary series and The World Of James Herriot (15 minutes), with displays in a vet’s restored 1940s home and surgery – and for a day full of fun on adrenaline rides, head for Flamingo Land Resort (40 minutes).
