- Scenic, spacious site on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors National Park
- Two playgrounds, indoor play area, bike hire and pitch and putt
- Award-winning amenities, licensed shop and homemade cakes for sale
Families, couples and even the family dog, get ready to strike gold. Popular Golden Square Touring and Camping Park on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park is an absolute gem of a site – safe, scenic, spacious, well-maintained and with enough to do to keep guests of all sizes busy for days.
Once the kids are persuaded to leave the two outdoor playgrounds, indoor play area, pitch and putt and football field, countryside walks and trails start direct from the park; seaside frolics at Scarborough and surrounds are an hour away, and a sports centre with indoor pool is five minutes’ drive down the road. Those who prefer to take to two wheels can hire bikes on site and ask the Golden Square owners for info on the best cycling and mountain bike trails in the area; there be loads.
Away from the hum of activities, Golden Square has glittering little touches all over: two luxury stone-built and heated toilet and shower blocks – winner of the local Loo of the Year accolade; two disabled/family bathrooms, and an on-site licensed shop selling caravan accessories, toys, games, groceries and essentials like bread and milk (it sells daily newspapers and homemade cakes too; a golden opp for stretching out in the sun, perhaps…).
Pitches are warm, sheltered and kept secluded by specially planted trees, hedges and shrubs; the park has also been designed on three levels so that even in the height of the summer season it doesn’t feel crowded.
And as it’s North Yorkshire, the views at Golden Square are solid gold too: moorland, forest and farm stretching all around and into the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors.

Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
However, where the pitch or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple pitches or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click "Make another booking like this" at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.
Large groups: check the listing page for any group restrictions set out in the terms and section titled ‘Please note’.

Take the A1 and exit at Junction 49 to join the A168. Take the second sign for Thirsk, in order to avoid the town centre and at the roundabout take the A19 south to York. After approximately 3 miles, turn left signposted 'Caravan route Helmsley' and at Coxwold turn left for Ampleforth. Immediately after driving through Ampleforth, take the left-hand fork for Helmsley and you will see us on your left-hand side approximately 1.5 miles down the road.
Golden Square Touring and Camping Park is above Ampleforth village which has two village pubs serving meals and snacks (and ale); several more pubs as well as restaurants and cafés are available in the market town of Helmsley a few miles away.
The 110-mile Cleveland Way starts in Helmsley, looping around the North York Moors National Park and ending at Filey via the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast to end at Filey.
Both Ampleforth and Helmsley have public swimming pools – Ampleforth’s indoor at the college sports centre, and Helmsley’s outdoor and open in the summer months. The sports centre also has indoor and outdoor tennis, squash and badminton, with more of the same at several other leisure centres within driving distance.
Outdoors, there are endless opportunities in the 554 square miles of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park: pony trekking across the moors, rock climbing and off-road driving area mere few of the pursuits here to suit all tastes.
If you prefer a more peaceful time, professional fly fishing tuition is to hand close to Golden Square and fishing lakes are at Castle Howard, Terrington and Hovingham; for golf, five courses are within 12 miles including Gilling Castle two miles away, Kirkbymoorside within six; Easingwood ten, and Malton and Thirsk within 12 miles.
Near Ampleforth, Helmsley and around North Yorkshire you’ll also find stately homes, castles and historic houses galore; days out for the kids such as Flamingo Land and Go Ape!, and museums, shopping and first-class foodie establishments in fantastic York about an hour away. Make time for the seaside too: Filey, Bridlington and Whitby are all within easy driving distance of Scarborough and all worth a day trip (each).
Those looking for a bird’s eye view over the moors can pick up a hang-gliding or paragliding lesson from stunning Sutton Bank near Thirsk – don’t get dizzy if it’s your first time; the instructor will be up there with you too.
