  • Scenic spacious site on the edge of the North York Moors National Park
  • Two playgrounds, indoor play area, bike hire and pitch and putt
  • Award-winning amenities, licensed shop, and homemade cakes for sale
Families, couples and even the family dog, get ready to strike gold. Popular Golden Square Touring and Camping Park on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park is an absolute gem of a site – safe, scenic, spacious, well-maintained and with enough to do to keep guests of all sizes busy for days. Once the kids are persuaded to leave the two outdoor playgrounds, indoor play area, pitch and putt and football field, countryside walks and trails start direct from the park; seaside frolics at Scarborough and surrounds are an hour away, and a sports centre with indoor pool is five minutes’ drive down the road. Those who prefer to take to two wheels can hire bikes on site and ask the Golden Square owners for info on the best cycling and mountain bike trails in the area; there be loads. Away from the hum of activities, Golden Square has glittering little touches all over: two luxury stonebuilt and heated toilet and shower blocks – previous winners of the local Loo of the Year accolade – as well as two disabled/family bathrooms. An on-site licensed shop sells caravan accessories, toys, games, groceries and essentials like bread and milk (it sells daily newspapers and homemade cakes too; a golden opportunity for afternoon relaxing in the sun, perhaps…). Pitches are warm, sheltered and kept secluded by specially planted trees, hedges and shrubs; the park has also been designed on three levels so that even in the height of the summer season it doesn’t feel crowded. And as it’s North Yorkshire, the views at Golden Square are gold-standard too: moorland, forest and farm stretching all around and into the Yorkshire moors.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Location is pretty nice and some lovely walks from the site into the Forrest. (Don’t use their booklet at all cost)

Cleanliness of the toilets and showers.

Disliked Really quite unfriendly from the off,. Dogs are allowed however the lead police seem to prioritise catching you with the lead off your dog than providing friendly customer service! We had our 12 week old puppy off the lead writhing 5m off our camper and were told to get her on a lead!…errrr why, she is enjoying a chew laid down and is the size of a baby Jack Russel!

Next came the WiFi, signal not great and the WiFi you have to pay for which when the site is hardly cheap is unnecessary.

The walks in and around the site, which are printed in the shop have to be bought, which again I think is unnecessary and greedy, not only that, but the printed route is well outdated and is not representative of what reference points are now there, resulting in getting lost on numerous occasions.

Overall we were very disappointed with the our experience and was compounded by the lady in the shop giving 3 young children a proper dressing down when all they were trying to do was spend their money. It was so uncalled for that another guy in the shop went to find their parents to let them know they had done nothing wrong at all.

Lovely area, poor experience, such a shame.

Excellent site with clean facilities and friendly staff.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Parks are ideal for children of all age. Facilities - toilet, showers and washing up area all cleaned to a high standard.
Shop is well stocked and staff are friendly.

Disliked The ground is very hard, which obviously can’t be changed but maybe some warning when or after booking to advise of this and to bring lots of tent pegs.

Site is exactly as advertised

Electric grass pitch

Liked Requested a quiet area as we don’t have kids yet so didn’t want to be near the play park which was accommodated. Facilities and site were clean, ANPR for entry and exit secured the site a bit more so felt safer I imagine for families with small children.
Our dog is our baby and a spaniel needs exercise, there is two dog walk areas, one is a big field which we appreciate as they could have just put more camp spaces but haven’t.

Disliked The shorter loop dog walk sign goes from grass walk through to a forested part which had a wire fence so lead to basically nothing? People had smashed the fence down so you could walk over it and make a loop back to the camp site but seemed a bit odd.

Nothing the site can do but oh my trying to get tent pegs and wind break into the ground which was so dry was very difficult, make sure you’ve got a good hammer and a strong man.

Local attractions

Golden Square Touring and Camping Park is above Ampleforth village which has two village pubs serving meals and snacks (and ales); several more pubs as well as restaurants and cafés are available in the market town of Helmsley, a few miles away. The 110-mile Cleveland Way starts in Helmsley, looping around the North York Moors National Park and ending at Filey via the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast. Endless other outdoor opportunities in the 554 square miles of the North York Moors National Park include pony trekking across the moors, rock climbing, and off-road driving… a mere few of the pursuits here to suit all tastes. If you prefer a more peaceful time, professional fly fishing tuition is to hand close to Golden Square and fishing lakes are at Castle Howard, Terrington and Hovingham; for golf, five courses are within 12 miles including Gilling Castle two miles away, Kirkbymoorside within six, Easingwood 10 miles away, and Malton and Thirsk within 12 miles.
