  • Quiet family-run Dorset park 20 minutes’ walk from Lyme Regis
  • Charmouth 10 minutes’ drive; Beer 20 minutes; Chesil Beach 50 minutes
  • On-site shop; pop-up dining in summer; pub five minutes’ walk
Looking for a non-party place? Set in peaceful countryside on the county lines between Devon and Dorset, Hook Farm Campsite in Uplyme should be your first pick. This family-run holiday park is a quiet place designed for small family groups, couples and solo travellers only. Not only that, but it's in pole position for exploring the Jurassic Coast and the pretty seaside town of Lyme Regis (20 minutes’ walk away). Once you’ve settled in, owners John and Jacky and their close-knit team at reception are happy to advise on sightseeing and local walks, or provide information on local events and attractions. The adjacent on-site shop is stocked with camping essentials, basic foods and barbecue bits, as well as sweets and snacks to keep the kids going. The staples store in Uplyme, 10 minutes’ walk away, should have anything you can’t find in the site shop, and there’s also a pub five minutes' walk away serving home-cooked food and real ales. For food fanatics, pop-up food trucks stop by Hook Farm Campsite in high season, and it’s also close to River Cottage (35 minutes’ drive, famed as the restaurant of TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall), as well as an assortment of pubs and restaurants showcasing local food and drinks. The campsite is situated within a dark-skies area, so you might get lucky weatherwise and observe star-studded night skies from the comfort of your pitch.

Electric grass campervan pitch (medium)

Liked Everything!! Staff so friendly and accommodating. Cleanliness of whole site. Showers, despite the 20p for 4 minutes is a great idea and they are so worth it. Pitches are not uniformed which is lovely, utilising the best of the views. Dog off lead walk in the field behind, was a great addition. Riverside walk to Lyme Regis, picturesque and not steep, took around 40 minutes. The Talbot Arms pub 5 minutes away- good beer. Food trucks during our stay was lovely idea and meant no cooking! Shop on site does essential when needed and not over priced. Amazing site, will definitely return.

Liked friendly staff and clean site. Excellent facilities and wi-fi throughout. No service at all on 4G or 5G so very grateful for the wi-fi. I even had a little garden area and hedge next to my pitch. Great views.

Electric grass tent pitch (XL)

Liked Good location

Disliked Good location, but unfortunately ruined by extremely rude and unwelcoming staff.

We stayed for three nights over the August Bank Holiday. On arrival, we asked if a one-hour-later check-out might be possible on Tuesday, depending on availability. We were immediately told that this was not allowed and that we would have to pay for an entire extra night. On Monday afternoon, we were the only guests on the tent field, with no new arrivals, so this seemed particularly unreasonable.

The site also has very strict rules about tent positioning and parking, but these were not clearly explained to us on arrival. We were later confronted by a member of staff, Dave, and told to move our car and re-pitch our tent, despite there being no practical space to do so. We moved the car to the nearby car park to avoid further confrontation, but a member of staff followed us there and insisted that all spaces were reserved, despite there being no signs indicating this. He then demanded £10.50 per day for parking.

When we agreed to pay, he suddenly said, “I’ve changed my mind. F*** *** the campsite, you are trespassing,” and threatened to call the police.

We have never experienced such aggressive and unprofessional behaviour at a campsite. Clearer communication and basic courtesy would have made a huge difference. Sadly, despite the good location, we would not return or recommend this campsite.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback.

To ensure a consistent check-out process, we do not offer late check-outs.

In regards to tent/car positioning, this is based on a thought-out process; to ensure safety and comfort for our guests, while reducing damage to the pitches (especially during wet periods). While we did show you where to position your vehicle on arrival, we appreciate you may not have been aware of this.

Our staff share our strong customer service ethos and this shows in many of our reviews. They would certainly not be swearing at guests, we have discussed this directly with them.

We are certainly disappointed to receive this feedback, as everything we do is to ensure a positive customer experience. However, we have taken your comments on board regarding the pitching and will ensure we make it clear in future.

Liked Staff were great, very friendly and helpful and a lovely well maintained campsite.
Beautiful location.

Disliked No hairdryers or electric point in the loos, in the area where the non electric hook up campers are located.
Given there is solar panels, I don’t think it’s much to ask for this, even if the campsite needs to put the fee up by £1 per night to cover this.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (large)

Liked Lovely site, it’s was a fairly large site for us but because of the way it’s laid out it feels private. The toilet block is modern, we mostly used the lower one. We had to walk up to the top block to freeze ice packs.
Yes, the showers are 20p but it wasn’t a problem, there is a count down so you know how long you’ve got left. I was worried about this before we arrived but it meant the showers weren’t busy and I never had to queue, even on bank holiday weekend.
The shop was well stocked and the wardens were friendly and helpful.

Disliked I didn’t dislike anything but less mobile people may struggle with the hilly site.

Local attractions

Dedicated star-gazers can stroll up to Trinity Hill Nature Reserve (45 minutes’ walk), awarded Dark Sky Discovery Site status thanks to its lack of light pollution. Hook Farm is also a handy base camp for walkers in the East Devon Natural Landscape (direct from site), and has ready access to the South West Coast Path (half an hour), while following the East Devon Way (five minutes) gives you a handy riverside shortcut down to the sea. Historic Lyme Regis (five minutes’ drive) is known for the fossils and ammonites found on its sands, and is gateway to the dramatic seascapes of the Jurassic Coast. You can hunt for more ancient treasures on the beach at Charmouth (10 minutes), and wander along the pebble spit at Chesil Beach (50 minutes). The lively (and lovely) seaside town of Beer (20 minutes) has a photogenic fishing harbour and several contemporary art galleries to mooch around, and if the kids are with you, you’ll probably end up at The Donkey Sanctuary (also 20 minutes), where you can feed and cuddle rescue donkeys.
