General

  • Pub site near Spalding and 20 minutes from Wisbech
  • Lounge with open fire, beer garden and pool tables
  • Food including Sunday lunches and pub grub

Hurrah, another Pitchup.com pub campsite! And what a decent pub it is too.

The Rose and Crown pub, restaurant and caravan park in Lincolnshire's Holbeach Hurn near Spalding has all sorts of proper touches you'll likely like to see in an inn, like a warmly welcoming atmosphere for all manner of customers, a main lounge with an open fire, beer garden, outside play area, large marquee and a games room with TV pool table, air hockey and arcade games. And plenty of space in the adjoining grounds for a bit of football or rounders if you're the type to feel a tad competitive after a pint…

If you also like to see proper food in pubs, you should be happy here with the Sunday lunches, mixed grills, trad pub grub, bar snacks, veggie choices, piles of homemade desserts, and proper chips handcut from locally-sourced spuds, from a menu dished up every day of the week from 9am to 9pm. And as the Rose and Crown is one of the last independent breweries in the region, you'll be fairly certain of getting a decent pint too.

The pub was taken over in the summer of 2015 by Carol and Doug, who want their inn and camping guests to have as enjoyable a stay as possible: they've added a garden bar with a second pool table, and also look after a large patio to the rear of the pub, a landscaped pond and an extensive car park.

very quiet site during the day not so quiet at night thou :( maybe it was just a one of lol we did sleep ok but not till after 12.50 in the morning
    facilities were functional and clean
Very good value for the money £12 per night low season with ehu
Pub was friendly and welcoming and the service was good
The food was excellent and really good value for the money

    Disliked:

I would describe the whole set up as an absolute quality diamond but still a bit in the in the rough .. attention to detail was lacking nothing was finished off new doors fitted in the shower blocks but trims still in the ruff not paint or still undercoated and mitres not great . beautiful quality limed oak paneling on the bar fronts but let down by the edging un-finished floor tilling in the gents down but not finished quality worktop and moulded sinks but no cabinetry or panelling underneath .washing up area stainless steel stink drainer but no protection from the elements... as i said brilliant people great grub love the pub and only £12 per night low season with hook up so whats not too like there :) but would like to revisit in a year or two and see the difference because the quality of the people and the enthusiasm and team work im sure this site has the potential to be a 1st class site and i would be happy to pay more per night too reflect the work they have done and will do ...regards Andy and Lynn

From the manager...

Showers were recently refurbished and were clean but it was difficult to adjust the temperature in the two that we used. Ladies toilets were ok and clean but couldn't get hot water at the taps, perhaps didn't wait long enough. We didn't use the pub so cannot comment on it. The price paid was about right for what you get.

    Disliked:

Gents toilets were very poor and in need of an upgrade, the entrance door was an upside down diabled toilet door and there were areas of unlevel floor where walls had been taken out. They were clean though. The ground in front of the toilet block was muddy and dangerous after heavy rain, I nearly slipped on it on 3 or 4 occasions. This area needs tarmacking or slabbing which would also stop mud being trampelled into the toilets/showers. I'm not sure that the electric hook up points are up to the current electrical specification, I could see no sign of an RCD on the socket outlets. The childrens play area was not well maintaind and quite dangerous for young children.

Toilets blocked, site used by tourers perminetly sited no specific pitches not very clean

From the manager...

we welcome both good and bad comments, so we can improve the site, we are on septic tanks which do get blocked occasionally, but we do our best to sort it out as soon as we know, we do ask not to put anything other than toilet paper in the toilets but people forget, (they get used to big city toilets),I only have 6 seasonal tourers on at the moment, (which we keep together) and at quieter times we do say pick your own spot as it is a big field and you can have more space, as we are close to the marsh, begining of september we have wildfowlers come on for 6 months again we keep these all together leaving plenty of space for holiday campers

Defiantly advice people to go to bawsy pits.. its about a 20 min ride away and its absolutly beautiful. Lots of long walks and cauliflower feilds lol

    Disliked:

No signal at all and Wifi was down at the time of our visit but wasnt the staffs fault. Technical error..

    Disliked:

It was the worst camping experience I have ever had the noise from other campers was ridiculous it went on till the early hours so didn't get no sleep. The toilet facilities were shocking there was poo smeared on the walls and the taps didn't run for long so took awhile to wash your hands didn't use the shower facilities as they looked very dirty was not happy at all

From the manager...

we do ask people to keep noise down when it gets late, but sound will travel, and tents are not sound proof. the toilets are checked and cleaned several times during the day, but we did have quite a few children on site, (they drop paper on floor, and can have accidents with dirty hands) we have the taps on push buttons so they are not left running and wasting water, the sinks all have plugs and they are not slow running taps so do not understand your comment, because as soon as you push the button water will flow!

This site was fabulous, there was a friendly welcome for us and the dog. We loved the dog walk area, the play area was great for children, the pub was reasonably priced and the food was delicious. The site was very peaceful and quiet. The toilets and showers were spotless. I would recommend this site to anybody, we will return again in the future.

good size pitch lots of space and freedom to really camp back to basics as it should be.
playground for children entertained our bunch for the whole of our stay.
pub grub was amazing we ate about 4 times over a 10 day stay.
great location to go and explore the east coast.
showers were good - used all 4 at some point they were hot and powerful which is usually hard to find on campsites normally have portaloo showers.
The owners and all staff made us feel really welcome with children, we only had to ask and things were sorted straight away.
fantastic fun day on Sunday our kids and big kids loved the inflatables well done to Ben worked out there all day in that heat.

    Disliked:

There wasn't really anything we didn't like. we preferred when the site was less busy because we got to play rounders in the field but that's a personal preference.

lower rate for cleanliness but that's not a reflection on them trying, its hard to keep showers clean when your in a field water and mud will = mess society need to clean after them selves. not an issue for the owners.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments, and appreciated we are a basic camp site, and understood we do try to keep a check on toilets but at busy times people will walk mud and grass in,

Directions

From the A17 at Fleet Hargate, turn at the signpost Hovenden House and after 1/4 miles turn left, signposted Holbeach Hurn. After approximately 3/4 mile on the right through the village is the Rose and Crown Pub. A few yards further on and the site entrance is on your right.

When your satnav states you are at your destination, proceed straight ahead where you will see the Rose and Crown Pub (bright yellow) on your right, then proceed for another 30 yards where you will see the site entrance again on the right.

Please don't drive down Low Road as this is only a small lane which tourers and motorhomes find it hard to come down.

Local attractions

You'll find a fair bit to do within a reasonable drive of the Rose and Crown, like Wisbech and its Elgoods Brewery, gardens and maze 20 minutes away, and royal days out at Sandringham within 19 miles. Both Hunstanton and Skegness are within about 45 minutes' drive.

Closer to home are two golf courses and Spalding's Springfields Outlet Shopping & Festival Gardens, which also has a tourist point detailing local attractions.

Spend a day around the Wash too for birdwatching at Frieston, Gibraltar Point and RSPB Snettingsham and a look at the RAF bombing range where visitors are welcome to watch the aircraft.

Historians have the National Trust's Peckover House or the Octavia Hill Birth Place Museum, both in Wisbech, to wander around, and if you have kids along on your hol, they'll probably fancy wanders around Fun Farm, Alley Katz Bowling or the Butterfly Wildlife Park.
