Rose and Crown: Swimming Pool

General

  • Bar and food site near Spalding and 20 minutes from Wisbech
  • Outdoor playground; big screens showing major live sports
  • Heated pool, large patio, and food seven days a week

Hurrah, another Pitchup.com pub site! And what a decent pub it is too.

The Rose and Crown in Holbeach Hurn, near Spalding, is a budget-friendly site with an attached village bar and restaurant surrounded by the Lincolnshire Fens. Families, groups, solo travellers, bikers and dogs are all welcome at this friendly Lincolnshire site.

The pub has all sorts of touches you'll likely like to see in an inn: there's a main lounge and a beer garden with covered seating along with more modern updates like big screens showing Sky and BT Sports. There is also a heated outdoor pool and an outdoor kids' playground.

If you also like to see proper food in pubs, you should be happy here with the traditional pub menu dished up every day of the week from noon. And as the Rose and Crown is one of the last independent breweries in the region, you'll be fairly certain of getting a decent pint too…

The Rose and Crown is run by Dougie, who wants his guests to have as enjoyable a stay as possible: he's always working on upgrades to the pub and campsite so there's often something new to discover on a stay here…

Wifi can be picked up in the pub only (not across the entire campsite), but it can be a bit poor/slow at times because of the rural setting. A supermarket is five minutes' drive away for supplies.

Please note

The bar is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

Please note that the shower facilities are unisex.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

A cable measuring at least 10 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

No electric barbecues allowed.

The restaurant is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/03 and 31/12 (subject to weather conditions).

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

A charge of £0.20 applies for the use of the shower.

    Disliked:

Cleanliness has really gone down hill from last year could benifit from fly zappers placed high especially in the front pub area.. we have been hear b4 and was much cleaner last time don’t know weather this is due to staff shortages but was really off putting as we have returned home with loads of bites .. once the staff are back on top of cleaning its a lovely place to go .. just maybe more staff needed as they are very over worked and really all try there best

The park, the pool, the pub, the food, Mark was amazing (not to be confused with the owner Dougie), bingo night (the locals were super friendly), met some lovely people & my daughter made some lovely friends. We ate at the pub several times and the food was always good & very reasonably priced. Drinks were reasonably priced too, don’t usually drink but they had peroni on tap so a few of those were consumed. The pub sells ice creams, sweets & chocolate for the kids. The pool was great when it was quiet & was often open past the time it was supposed to be closed, was clean & warm. Mark has time for everyone & works his butt off. The staff were all friendly enough & again they don’t stop, really hard working group.

    Disliked:

Dougie… gets confused with mark because all the reviews say how nice dougie is so people mistake them. We were there for 12 nights & the only time he spoke to us was when we complained about our neighbours smoking weed & the smell taking over our caravan, not sure anything was said & they left the next day but not before smoking more. On the week nights it gets a bit quieter & dougie goes around demanding the kids go back to their tent/caravan before it’s even 10pm, one family we met were told off because of their tv being loud, again it wasn’t late. On a weekend it doesn’t matter, kids out until the small hours, people shouting & music playing & not a lot done about it. The back of the site was taken over for a few days by people that drank all day, threw up in the pub loo & then blasted music from their car at god knows what time. They were told to turn it off but their party continued & the kids screaming & playing until 2-3am… thankfully we were far enough away & in a caravan for it not to disturb us too much but I did feel for those in tents around them! Horrible group of people. When it’s busy the pool area gets very busy, parents drinking & kids running riot & taking over the pool. The location is very remote, mobile reception pretty bad but wifi available around the pub & on some areas around the field. It’s a 10 minute drive to the nearest supermarket which isn’t too bad. Some drivers use the road into the camping field like a race track, no regard for the kids & animals around.

Directions

If you are following a satnav, it may well take you down Low Road; ignore this and carry on along Marsh Road, where you will see the Rose and Crown pub (bright yellow) on your right. Check in here, then drive for another 30 yards to reach the site entrance, again on the right.

Please don't drive down Low Road as this is only a small lane which tourers and motorhomes find it hard to come down.

Local attractions

You'll find a fair bit to do within a reasonable drive of the Rose and Crown, like Wisbech and its Elgoods Brewery, gardens and maze 20 minutes away, and royal days out at Sandringham within 35. Both Hunstanton and Skegness are within about 45 minutes' drive.

Closer to home are two golf courses and Spalding's Springfields Outlet Shopping & Festival Gardens, which also has a tourist point detailing local attractions.

Spend a day around the Wash too for birdwatching at Frieston, Gibraltar Point and RSPB Snettingsham and a look at the RAF bombing range where visitors are welcome to watch the aircraft.

Historians have the National Trust's Peckover House or the Octavia Hill Birth Place Museum, both in Wisbech, to wander around, and if you have kids along on your hol, they'll probably fancy wanders around Fun Farm, Alley Katz Bowling or the Butterfly Wildlife Park.
