General

  • Pub site near Spalding and 20 minutes from Wisbech
  • Lounge with open fire, beer garden and pool tables
  • Food including Sunday lunches and pub grub

Hurrah, another Pitchup.com pub campsite! And what a decent pub it is too.

The Rose and Crown pub, restaurant and caravan park in Lincolnshire's Holbeach Hurn near Spalding has all sorts of proper touches you'll likely like to see in an inn, like a warmly welcoming atmosphere for all manner of customers, a main lounge with an open fire, beer garden, outside play area, large marquee and a games room with TV pool table, air hockey and arcade games. And plenty of space in the adjoining grounds for a bit of football or rounders if you're the type to feel a tad competitive after a pint…

If you also like to see proper food in pubs, you should be happy here with the Sunday lunches, mixed grills, trad pub grub, bar snacks, veggie choices, piles of homemade desserts, and proper chips handcut from locally-sourced spuds, from a menu dished up every day of the week from 9am to 9pm. And as the Rose and Crown is one of the last independent breweries in the region, you'll be fairly certain of getting a decent pint too.

The pub was taken over in the summer of 2015 by Carol and Doug, who want their inn and camping guests to have as enjoyable a stay as possible: they've added a garden bar with a second pool table, and also look after a large patio to the rear of the pub, a landscaped pond and an extensive car park.

Saw a couple of bad reviews on here but i always ignore them, the Victor Meldrew camping club will never be pleased. The owner of this site is a grafter doing his utmost to please everyone. The local Chinese delivered to the site

    Disliked:

Site was really muddy, there was piles of hardcore that could of been used to make it better but it wasn't used
Watered down soap in the dispensers
Site was really remote, no shops within walking distance
Shower and toilet blocks could do with renovation, expecially the gents!!!!!!

From the manager...

we advertise as a rural pub, we have a shop on site, (which you can not miss!!) and tescos is only 2 miles away, the piles of hardcore were there because work was on going to the roads, but due to the bad rain the machine could not be used. other sites closed over the Easter break because of the rain, we decided to stay open, and let people decide them self,

    Clean toilets with toilet paper.
Friendly pub with real beer and pub grub at reasonable price - not Cordon Bleu but OK and plenty of it.
    Quiet and rural.
    Large pitches and EHU.
Stayed 1 night to try out new motorhome and was a good choice.
Pub LED lighting - a bit bizarre in a traditional pub but impressive and we liked it.
Pub Sound system - great if they were playing our kind of music.

    Disliked:

A bit rough and ready with mounds of soil and a building site feel. Possibly in the process of upgrading.
No hardstanding, grass pitches only so a little worried about excessive rain and muddy field.
Very loud TV noise (motorbike racing in our case) in the main bit of pub, not great when eating a meal although other half commented on the high spec of the sound system.
LED lighting could be off putting for some and may detract from traditional pub feel.

From the manager...

Thank you for commenting on your stay, we do like to hear all comments so we can address any problems we have, we are in the process of more roads around the site and parking next to statics, hence soil dug out etc, which we hope will stop a lot of mud in wetter weather, at the time of your visit we had a stand in cook, (me and my partner was off site, no excuse I know, but has you can see from previous comments normal cook gets good reports,) I can only apologize for volume of music and sound, I shall address staff, to moniter the sound, has I do appreciate different customers like to hear different music, (I myself would not like to hear all the loud modern stuff when trying to have a meal and a drink)

Stayed Easter weekend, I HAD checked the weather knew full well it would be wet and muddy, glad Dougie didnt cancel camping as alot of other sites did. Yes it was muddy and some people had to be pulled off site,( we pulled about 5 people off, with our landrover) staff was on hand if asked to help pull off if needed, you could see the likelyhood of this before you pitched up.
On arrival you could tell it was a relaxed campsite, we could pick our own pitch, was advised where during wet weather was best to park. Found all staff to be friendly and helpful.
We ate in the pub twice, on the 2nd time we asked if we could have 1 kids meal and an extra plate for 2 kids to share as the meals are HUGE, owners was fine with this, meals was great value for money food and drinks was not over priced at all, we did venture of site and had a day at local garden centre Baytree, campsite is not far from main towns of Holbeach and Spalding which both have plenty to see and do for days off campsite.

    Disliked:

    Nothing

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments, and understood we can not control the weather, hopefully you will visit us again, and see we have now put hardstand down in front of the toilets and shower block to stop so much mud in wet weather

No heating in the toilet and shower block.
Electrics were a bit temperamental but I believe that was caused by the rain.

The toilets were mucky and falling to peices. Out of 3 of the taps only 1 worked. The pitches were shocking and they had made no effort whatsoever to try and make the ground better as it was throwing it down all weekend.
You aren't assigned a pitch your just left to pitch up where you please. Dogs were allowed to roam which resulted in dog poo being all over and with having 4 young children was quite hard as they kept standing in it.
I can honestly say we will never return to this site.

Directions

From the A17 at Fleet Hargate, turn at the signpost Hovenden House and after 1/4 miles turn left, signposted Holbeach Hurn. After approximately 3/4 mile on the right through the village is the Rose and Crown Pub. A few yards further on and the site entrance is on your right.

When your satnav states you are at your destination, proceed straight ahead where you will see the Rose and Crown Pub (bright yellow) on your right, then proceed for another 30 yards where you will see the site entrance again on the right.

Please don't drive down Low Road as this is only a small lane which tourers and motorhomes find it hard to come down.

Local attractions

You'll find a fair bit to do within a reasonable drive of the Rose and Crown, like Wisbech and its Elgoods Brewery, gardens and maze 20 minutes away, and royal days out at Sandringham within 19 miles. Both Hunstanton and Skegness are within about 45 minutes' drive.

Closer to home are two golf courses and Spalding's Springfields Outlet Shopping & Festival Gardens, which also has a tourist point detailing local attractions.

Spend a day around the Wash too for birdwatching at Frieston, Gibraltar Point and RSPB Snettingsham and a look at the RAF bombing range where visitors are welcome to watch the aircraft.

Historians have the National Trust's Peckover House or the Octavia Hill Birth Place Museum, both in Wisbech, to wander around, and if you have kids along on your hol, they'll probably fancy wanders around Fun Farm, Alley Katz Bowling or the Butterfly Wildlife Park.

  • Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens (9.6 miles)
