General

  • Pub and food site near Spalding and 20 minutes from Wisbech
  • Lounge with open fire and pool tables
  • Beer garden, play area, marquee and lots of outside space

Hurrah, another Pitchup.com pub campsite! And what a decent pub it is too.

The Rose and Crown pub, restaurant and caravan park in Lincolnshire's Holbeach Hurn near Spalding has all sorts of proper touches you'll likely like to see in an inn, like a warmly welcoming atmosphere for all manner of customers, a main lounge with an open fire, beer garden, outside play area, large marquee and a games room with TV, a pool table, air hockey and arcade games. And plenty of space in the adjoining grounds for a bit of football or rounders if you're the type to feel a tad competitive after a pint…

If you also like to see proper food in pubs, you should be happy here with the mixed grills, trad pub grub, bar snacks, veggie choices, piles of homemade desserts, and proper chips handcut from locally-sourced spuds, from a menu dished up every day of the week from 9am to 9pm. And as the Rose and Crown is one of the last independent breweries in the region, you'll be fairly certain of getting a decent pint too.

The pub was taken over in the summer of 2015 by Carol and Doug, who want their inn and camping guests to have as enjoyable a stay as possible: they've added a garden bar with a second pool table, and also look after a large patio to the rear of the pub, a landscaped pond and an extensive car park.

Wifi can be picked up in the pub but at times it can be poor as the site is rural.

    Facilities

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments, unfortunately we had families on who did not respect the facilities would be used by other campers, the cleaner checks several times through the day, I just wish people would treat the toilets and showers as they do at home, the bulk of people do clean after themselves but it only takes a few not to (ie toilet paper dropped on floor, just pick it up and flush it, close shower doors so as not to flood the entire floor) if your shower, shampoo etc as run out put it in the bin,

The amount of space for the kids to play and explore where they were still in eyesight was great, it meant they could have fun while we relaxed.
Lovely staff and a nice pub

    Disliked:

Only slight criticism which didnt affect our stay at all was on of the paths had lots of rubble some of which were bits of porcelain etc but this had been put down to help drainage.

From the manager...

thank you for the comments, yes unfortunately we had laid rumble (last few weeks we have had a lot of rain, and thought we needed to sort the mud problem out quickly and small stones will be laid on top, we concentrated on the well used area 1st,) ie entrance to shower block, roads into fields. hope this as not put you off returning and if you return will see further improvements

Thank you, vegetarians and vegans are rare to us but we are very happy you was happy with what we offered to you, maybe you could send some advise as on what you would like to eat to give us more of a idea as what most vegetarians prefer,

Apart from the Stabbing on site which is not the campsite fault although I believe this could have been prevented with rules and staff doing the rounds to ensure all was ok and rules were being followed, the male toilets were blocked and over flowing all over the floor which the owners were aware off but left it until the next day to clear without even warning sign on the door. Only two male toilets, 3 female and 3 freezing showers for a campsite of this size is very poor. The pub needs a serious update although the little time that was spend in there all customers and staff appeared friendly but when your arm gets stuck to the table the cleanliness appears not to be at its best. There is drinking water we were told not to drink it as it was stagnant and unpleasant so be prepared with bottled water. It appeared to be a free for all on the site with no room. No marked out pitches which would have made such a difference. Electric hook up was a bit of a mission with wires trailing everywhere. The site itself needs clearing as abandoned caravans, timber and rubble spoil what could be quite nice. The disabled toilet is very misleading as anyone with a wheelchair would be unable to access this as to get to it you had to go through two standard doors and two steps... This could be a nice site so its very disappointing.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments. We are presuming that you are referring to the gents toilets which have still to be refurbished. Due to the bad weather in the first quarter of this year we made the decision to concentrate on hard standings/roads, however our next priority will be the gents toilets. We are sorry that you were not able to operate the showers but will look into your comments. Site rules are in place, rightly or wrongly we believe that people who come camping appreciate and understand rules of camping which cover all camp sites. We take on board your comment of informing campers who to contact in case of a serious breach. we have 3 drinking water points and the 1 near disposal waste is not drinking water. we are on bottled gas and septic tanks and putting wet wipes down toilets does not help

We stayed for 4 nights and it was a nice relaxing atmosphere. The staff are very friendly, the showers are clean, as are the toilets.

    Disliked:

It’s not really a dislike, but the on site WiFi didn’t really work and phone signal isn’t very good, which can be expected as the site is surrounded by fields and not much else.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments, hopefully we will be having fibre optic into the village soon,
for wifi (the whole village has poor internet) espescially when kids finish school!

Toilets constantly blocked, not cleaned properly and very run down. So don't believe the being updating comments as they were being done on last year's reviews also. Showers while reasonably modern were plumbed backwards so you had to go past the anti scald stop to go colder not hotter be warned. Pitches not designated and electric on 8 way boards so setting out was a free for all cables everywhere and little separation on plots.
No site rules mean people loud till early hours, during our stay till 4am until someone got stabbed for asking for people to be quiet. Which resulted in a quite interesting day with the police on site.
All in all I would say this site needs a good couple of weeks of being completely shut to get its act together sort the toilets out and set out proper plots.
Everyone being signed in should be given rules and a number to contact in case of any serious breaches.
It could easily be a diamond in the rough but currently its nearer the rough.

Dirty Toilets & showers, cramped and overcrowded pitches, terrain is uneven and mixed surfaces. Pub needs seriously updating. Stabbing on site whilst we were there. Didn’t seem to have any groundsmen keeping an eye on music levels - stabbing could of been prevented

From the manager...

people were asked to set up and park next to their units, but some just left cars anywhere, and we do ask for tent sizes but some turn up with much larger ones, and we find when partys of 3 or more pitches arrive, they set up closer to each other making it look more cramped, the family involved in the incident where asked to leave and will not be allowed back to the site (as was the rest of the groups in that party, even though they was not involved)

Directions

From the A17 at Fleet Hargate, turn at the signpost Hovenden House and after 1/4 miles turn left, signposted Holbeach Hurn. After approximately 3/4 mile on the right through the village is the Rose and Crown Pub. A few yards further on and the site entrance is on your right.

When your satnav states you are at your destination, proceed straight ahead where you will see the Rose and Crown Pub (bright yellow) on your right, then proceed for another 30 yards where you will see the site entrance again on the right.

Please don't drive down Low Road as this is only a small lane which tourers and motorhomes find it hard to come down.

Local attractions

You'll find a fair bit to do within a reasonable drive of the Rose and Crown, like Wisbech and its Elgoods Brewery, gardens and maze 20 minutes away, and royal days out at Sandringham within 19 miles. Both Hunstanton and Skegness are within about 45 minutes' drive.

Closer to home are two golf courses and Spalding's Springfields Outlet Shopping & Festival Gardens, which also has a tourist point detailing local attractions.

Spend a day around the Wash too for birdwatching at Frieston, Gibraltar Point and RSPB Snettingsham and a look at the RAF bombing range where visitors are welcome to watch the aircraft.

Historians have the National Trust's Peckover House or the Octavia Hill Birth Place Museum, both in Wisbech, to wander around, and if you have kids along on your hol, they'll probably fancy wanders around Fun Farm, Alley Katz Bowling or the Butterfly Wildlife Park.
