  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area
If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne. For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers. More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie… Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera. Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside. Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop…

Electric hardstanding touring pitch (no awning)

Liked: The location, far enough away to feel you are in the country, close enough to civilisation! The pool, in walking distance and great to relax in. Little shop onsite, has just what you need if you need to pick up some bits and pieces. Can pull up and things just work, no issues with hook ups or finding the amenities etc. Great long walk down on the Tissington Trail, the start being on the actual site too! Fresh water was 25 yards ish from our pitch, absolutely brilliant 🙂

Disliked: No dislikes, more observations. Shop and pool could be open a little later, but that’s just because of the kids wanting to swim later (and it’s largely the off season too so understandable the hours might be shorter etc).

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The free use of swimming bath.

Disliked: Shop needs more essential items and treats. On-site pizza/food wagon visiting of a weekend would be amazing.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Friendly reception staff and well stocked shop. Good position on site for camping and electric pitch good as close to the toilet/shower block and washing up area. Clearly marked pitches Great to have the option to book in got swimming. Laundry worked well - but the signage for using the app is on the wall to the right so a bit confusing for first time users. Close to so many fab things to do locally. Great pubs too for food. Toilet block had 2 large fan heaters on at all times which made it lovely and warm. Loads of toilets available. Great large park by reception but it was too wet for us to get much use out of it. Looked fab!

Disliked: Showers were like warm at best, which, when camping in October was a bit challenging. Swimming pool rules v strict for timings which made it a bit difficult when everyone had to leave as the changing rooms were really small. Cleaning of the washing up areas not great (maybe because out of season?) a pile of pasta in one of the sinks was there when we arrived Sunday evening and took until Wednesday morning to be removed. Electric points really quite spread out so bring a long cable. Pitches are a reasonable size - but we have a 7 man air tent which is quite large so car needed to be parked elsewhere. Not a dislike but something to be aware of.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch (no awning)

Liked: Very friendly staff, nice clean site, good sized family swimming pool and well equipped park for the kids. Showers were larger than average. Lots of nice walks nearby.

Disliked: They don’t accept cash in the on-site shop and there’s only one shower block and elsan point which seemed quite along way from our pitch.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park. You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
