Spacious tent pitches

General

  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area

If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne.

For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers.

More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie...

Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera.

Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside.

Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop...

Gold David Bellamy Conservation Award

Please note

Customer: access to the swimming pool is not included in the rate and is charged £2.50 per adult and £1.50 per child per session.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Group bookings of 4 or more people under 25 are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Parked up next to the bin. Not impressed when binmen emptied bins at 6.30am!! Also had to plug our electric in over the top of the bin area.

From the manager...

thank you for your review and we are so happy to read you enjoyed your time away despite all which was going on in the world! We are sorry to hear the bin men woke you up at 6.30am and this has been passed to our suppliers to reiterate a more practical time is needed so it does not disrupt stays. If you had of let us know these issues we would of happily relocated you to an alternative pitch.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the park in the future :)

From the manager...

We are glad to read that you liked the swimming pool and our recently improved play area. As you can appreciate due to the location within the Peak district some of the park does have a small element of unevenness. We do hope the weather also did not impact to much on your stay and hopefully we can welcome you back to Ashbourne Heights in much better weather next time :)

We are thrilled to read that you enjoyed your stay with us. We can only apologise regarding how waterlogged the park was. As you can appreciate we have had significant rainfall during the past weeks which has caused some disruption not only on park but in the local area.

We hope this has not put you off and hope to welcome you back to Ashbourne Heights when its a little bit sunnier :)

Expensive and poor facilities30/09/2019

Reviewer's country: United KingdomAnonymousMobile phone iconConfirmed

  • Electric grass touring caravan pitch
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

    Big park for children

    Disliked:

Very poor facilities for the price. Chemical toilet was full, Pooh floating around it in and a very long walk to the only other one on site. Only one shower and two toilets, which were very dirty, other shower block was a log walk away and also dirty. Barrier for security was pointless as you just buzzed and got let in. Swimming pool changing area is too small to actually use and only one dirty shower. Massive disappointment.

From the manager...

We are sorry to read that Ashbourne Heights was not to your liking. We would like to apologise about the Elsan point issues you had experienced. This was due to others using this point for other uses than its intended purposes which resulted in the point becoming blocked, which was quickly resolved by out grounds team. We are again surprised to read that you found the cleanliness levels not to your expectation and this will be reviewed by our housekeeping team. With regards to the Security barrier, this is in fact a very important aspect to the parks security, which guests feel it adds a safe feeling to their stay. As I am sure you aware, our park warden does ask the appropriate questions before allowing access into the park.

Very unlevel pitches and rather poor toilet/showers

From the manager...

We are thrilled to see you took full advantage of the play area while visiting us. We are sorry you found the pitches not to your liking and not level. As you can appreciate due to the location of the Park within the Peak District National Park, the land in which the park occupies does have some natural slopes which is the charm of staying within the Peaks. If you had raised your concerns about your pitch/shower facilities we also endeavour to address/help as much as possible.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park.

You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak.

More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock.

Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
