  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area
If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne. For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers. More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie… Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera. Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside. Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop…

Liked: Fantastic site, lovely park in front of our pitch which the children loved. Added bonus of a pool on site which was warm and clean. Facilities were great and the booking in was quick and straightforward. Was a last minute booking and a great site to access Dovedale.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Friendly welcome on arrival and staff always helpful. Play area was great and proximity to the Tissington Trail for the kids to cycle along was perfect.
Pool was great and easy to book in at reception. Shop was well stocked and even had soya milk.
Shower/toilets were very clean and well located for the touring pitches.

Disliked: WiFi doesn’t reach out to touring pitches but this is stated on the website/booking so I knew to expect it however phone signal also isn’t great so something to be aware of if needing to entertain children who’ve woken up at 6am and you need them to be quiet for at least another hour!

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely, clean, well maintained site. Dog friendly. Huge pitches as well. Swimming pool was great. Staff were really friendly, we'd arrived at the last pool session but they managed to let us in which was excellent! The children's play park was a good size and well maintained. The motor home and camping pitches were close to the toilets, play park and pool/ washing up area which was really convenient.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Pleasant Welcome, site was very tidy and well kept. Nice area and walks close by.

Disliked: Toilets and showers not particularly clean and heating not turned on but clearly available. All the taps (push timed taps) in toilets and washing up room very irritating. Looked like a great site for families with children but as we had been placed right against the children's play area, many people seem to think it was fine to walk very close to our van, so privacy was compromised.

Camping pod

Liked: The glamping pod was cosy and well thought out. There was a little heater that was more than adequate to heat the space and coat hooks on the wall, although there isn't much storage space for clothes, etc. I shared the double bed with my teenage daughter, and we used the top bunk for storage.

There are plenty of plug sockets, which was useful, as I took my slow cooker, steamer and pizza oven, and you can plug chargers into them.

We had our own toilet and shower at the back of the pod, which was really convenient, and there's a communal shower block too, if you wanted a shower in the evenings (our light timed out far too quickly and you had to dance whilst brushing your teeth to stop the light going out).

We liked the pool, it was easy to book and the water was warm.

Disliked: Although the beds were made up when we arrived, which was lovely, the mattresses are waterproof, and the bottom sheets kept sliding off, we could have done with fitted sheets.

The washing up sink outside of our toilet / shower block was convenient but not lit, so you couldn't really use it when it was dark and the hot water stopped working on day 2.

Having your own toilet / shower at the back of the pod is great, but the light is on a timer and it's set too short, it kept going off and we had to wiggle whilst brushing our teeth to keep it coming back on. I would not have wanted to shower in there in the evening's.

The kids' park could do with some attention.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park. You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
