Ashbourne Heights: Spacious tent pitches

General

  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area

If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne.

For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers.

More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie…

Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera.

Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside.

Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop…

Gold David Bellamy Conservation Award

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Customer: access to the swimming pool is not included in the rate and is charged £2.50 ($4.49) per adult and £1.50 ($2.69) per child per session.

Group bookings of four or more people under 25 are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

-Right near Dovedale and a 10 minute drive to Ashbourne if you need to pick up shopping
-Walking trails connecting to the site

    - Bit noisy first night however when I mentioned it the next day to reception they swiftly spoke with the party and had no problems after that. There is also a warden you can call if it persisted.

The lovely site, the incredibly friendly staff and the amazing facilities. This really is an extra special campsite for a luxury camping experience, akin to the great campsites in France. It is right on the Tissington Trail which was brilliant for us as cyclists. You could walk into Ashbourne and several local pubs. The park was clean and incredibly well taken care of with a zip wire and loads of great facilities. Great little shop and fab rec room. The loos, showers and washing up stations were spotless. I would definitely book again - it made me want to buy a holiday home there and I don't even live far away!!

    Disliked:

Music way after 10 on both nights. I heard other parents of young families complaining about this too. A large group of guys behind us played loud music till nearly midnight and their teen kids were loud till very late. It was actually hard for us to understand our family conversation at times, as it was so close and so loud. I thought that the camp wardens might come to ask them to turn it off but nobody came round to check rules were being followed. We couldn't actually see a cut off time for music in the camp rules and I think one should be published on a family site. There was also music and loud noise past 10.30 on night two, but fortunately not right behind our tent. This feature made it less suitable for young kids.

Direct access to cycle path, close to local town and lots of picturesque walks, welcoming staff, good play park for kids. Clean toilet block.

    Disliked:

The large part of the site between the Peak Field we stayed in and the main area with shop and play area etc. was filled with permanently pitched caravans and statics, which were mostly empty. This created a bit of a deserted feel to the site for us. The other half of the site felt more occupied and 'alive!'. Request the right area for what you want!

-Beautiful camping field with lovely views
-Great facilities that are always clean, hot shower & running water, multiple blocks so they’re never really busy
-Water points with cold water to fill up your bottles
-Swimming pool which was lovely when it was hot to cool down for a bit
-Little shop with necessities and ice lollies, also can freeze your ice packs next door which is useful
-Really friendly and nice staff who will help you feel welcome
-Bargain price, £24 for 4 nights!
-Close to Dovedale stepping stones, tissington trail and more. Very beautiful and recommended
    - We went to the Bowling Green Inn for food which is 8 min drive away and do amazing wood fired pizza.

    Disliked:

-The area where you pitch your tent is not fully described to people when they arrive and this leads to confusion and people pitching their tent in the wrong area and too close to yours. They say to pitch it where your number is but it was unclear if it’s in front, to the left, or to the right. This meant someone put their tent in front of ours very close and blocked our view of the fields :( but it’s okay.
-It is mostly a family park so if you’re a couple or older couple without children it may be abit too loud for you, as there are a lot of children.
The first 2 days there weren’t too many children and it was quite peaceful but then there were a lot of new arrivals and were kept up by our tent neighbours.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park.

You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak.

More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock.

Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
