  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area
If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne. For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers. More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie… Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera. Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside. Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop…

Powered grass tent site

Liked Excellent facilities. Shower and toilet block was spotless. Tent pitches with electric hook up in a fantastic position, flat with a great view. A very quiet and clean friendly site.

Disliked The shop was well stocked, but the bread selection was poor. Locally sourced bread would be far better.
It would be good if WiFi was available across all the site.
It would be nice if there was a cafe/bar on site.

Liked ★★★★★ An Amazing Two-Night Stay – Highly Recommended!

We’ve just returned from an incredible two-night stay at this campsite, and I genuinely couldn’t wait to sit down and share how wonderful the experience was. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff who were clearly passionate about the site and making sure guests had the best possible stay.

Arrival and Check-In:
The check-in process was quick, efficient, and personal. We were provided with a handy map of the campsite and given clear directions to our pitch. It was obvious from the start that the site is very well organised, but also has that relaxed, informal atmosphere that makes you feel like you can truly switch off.

The Pitch:
Our pitch was spacious, well-maintained, and beautifully positioned. We had ample room for our tent, car, and a little seating area to enjoy the outdoors. The ground was level and soft enough to make setting up the tent a breeze, but still solid enough to ensure good stability.

Facilities:
The campsite facilities were excellent. The toilets and showers were spotlessly clean throughout our stay, which really makes a huge difference. I noticed staff doing regular checks and cleaning frequently. There were also plenty of sinks for washing up, and well-labelled recycling and rubbish stations which encouraged everyone to keep the site tidy. The showers had great water pressure and plenty of hot water — a real luxury after a long day of walking and exploring.

Campsite Features:
The campsite itself is beautifully laid out and incredibly well cared for. There are lovely open green spaces, shaded areas, and even a small woodland spot perfect for little adventures or quiet moments with nature. It’s a peaceful place where you can truly appreciate the beauty around you — birdsong in the mornings, clear starry skies at night, and just the right level of quiet to feel away from it all without feeling isolated.

There were also fantastic family-friendly touches — a lovely play area for children and a small, safe stream nearby that provided endless fun for little ones paddling and exploring. For those travelling with kids, it’s the perfect combination of adventure and security.

Local Area and Activities:
One of the best parts of this campsite is its brilliant location. There are so many walks and cycling routes right from the doorstep. We took advantage of several nearby trails which were both scenic and manageable, and we even managed to explore a charming local village with a great little pub for lunch. The campsite staff were really helpful with local recommendations, maps, and tips for things to see and do in the area.
The site struck a perfect balance: enough amenities to keep families entertained, but also enough serenity for couples or solo travellers looking to unwind.

Atmosphere:
What stood out most throughout our stay was the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The other campers we met were warm, considerate, and seemed equally happy with their experience. The staff were visible but not intrusive — always around if you needed help or advice but never overbearing. There was a lovely sense of shared respect for the site, and it felt like everyone was quietly contributing to maintaining the campsite’s calm, tidy environment.

Value for Money:
The cost for our two-night stay was very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the facilities and the location. It’s clear that the owners put a lot of love and attention into keeping the site at its best, and it really shows.
This campsite was everything we hoped for and more. It offered us the perfect escape — peaceful, well-kept, and surrounded by nature, yet close enough to local points of interest to explore with ease. Whether you’re looking for a family camping holiday, a base for outdoor adventures, or simply a quiet spot to recharge, this place ticks all the boxes.

Liked The site is lovely and quiet and managed in a relaxed way.

A great location, with a couple of brilliant pubs only a 20 minute walk away and only a short bus journey or 75 minute walk along the Tissington Way into Ashbourne, an attractive town.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park. You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
