  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area
If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne. For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers. More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie… Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera. Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside. Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop…

Camping pod (ensuite)

Liked The location was great, lovely site set out nicely, with enough space and the children loved the park!

Disliked The pool was closed on the Sunday but we had not been advised of this, on none of the adverts or information packs were we told that the pool would be closed so it was really disappointing as we had planned to go to the pool on sunday morning. By the time we attended reception on Saturday to book we had missed our chance to go! It was the reason we booked the site for my son's birthday as this had been what he'd asked for.

When we booked we also advised that we would be attending with our two children aged 8 and 5 and yet were given a camping pod which had a broken bunk bed leaving the top bunk unsafe for a child to use!

This left our children having to share a bed which is really not ideal given their age and size difference.

We also could not open one of the doors to the cabin meaning that we were having to squeeze through one half of a French door.

Powered grass caravan site

Liked Ashbourne Heights is well located for exploring the Peak District by car, bike or on foot and offers direct access to the Tissington Trail cycle path into Ashbourne. There are many walking opportunities from the site with Dovedale about a 3 mile walk away. The site is well looked after with onsite swimming pool, children's play area, shop and launderette. The toilet block is clean and well appointed with heating for cooler months. The pitches were very quiet with only 3 units onsite in June.

Disliked My only complaint will be the temperature of the water in the showers which was just luke warm at best running to cold, then back to luke warm. The temperature was the same in the ladies toilet block and the outdoor washing up area. We did mention it to the receptionist who said she'd mention it to maintenance but the water temperature was the same the following day. Some hangers or hooks around the wash basins would be good too, nowhere to hang your towel or wash kit when shaving.

Camping pod (ensuite)

Liked The Pods: Decent and well-equipped with a double bed, bunk bed, small heater, charging points, bins, and two foldable chairs.

Facilities: We stayed in a pod with a private, keyed shower and toilet located just behind it. It was clean but very small (a smaller sink would have freed up more space). Note that other pods with indoor plumbing are available.

The Site: Clean and spacious with an on-site shop and a swimming pool (booking required). More solar lighting along the path to the toilets would be a good safety measure, particularly for the pods at the back. Our toilet block was around 3 metres from the pod, and the path could be quite dark at night.

The Area: Beautiful, vast Peak District landscapes. Walking the nearby Tissington Trail is highly recommended and was one of the highlights of our stay.
Staff: Warm, friendly, and welcoming throughout our visit.

Despite a few issues with cleanliness, bed comfort, and the lack of a mini fridge, we loved the area, enjoyed the pool, and appreciated the friendly staff. We'd happily return for the location alone. Tissington Trail gets an A*!

Disliked However, cleaning needs improvement as there was noticeable dust under the beds and on the ceilings. We even used a portable car hoover and found quite a lot of dust. A mini fridge would also have been a welcome addition. The beds were uncomfortable, although we had been forewarned by previous reviews and brought memory foam toppers, which helped.

Bell tent (four person)

Liked Well maintained campsite and the location of the Bell tents was lovely. The Bell tents themselves were spacious well laid out. The staff were also great.

Disliked Portaloos - though I understand why
Beds - Really uncomfortable and the reason why it wasn't a10. The metal base was like a tea tray with the mattress not being deep enough to compensate.

Glamping camping pod

Liked Everything, second time staying here. First time in a camping pod second time upgraded to the Glamping. Both are good, if we were without kids I’d probably choose the camping pod, with kids it’s just easier to have that kitchen area in the Glamping. Staff very friendly, very good service. Glamping pod was lovely and spacious. Swimming pool area is nice and clean, if I’m being really picky pool is a little deep for younger children minimum is 1.2m but I was well prepared with all safety measures, floats, armbands, vests etc so all good, we enjoyed the swimming so would go in again. Play park is well maintained, shop is well stocked with essentials. Will book again for sure!

Powered concrete slab caravan site (no awning)

Liked Lovely energy to the park, playground in the centre of the pitch up was great to let thr kids be free.
Swimming pool was a great addition.
The butty van had tasty food. Staff were very friendly and welcoming.
All in all lovely site.

Disliked The showers were cold, button press showers always a little let down. I undertand why but when paying extra for a campsite expect little hotter showers.
Shop needed more items in, handy for milk in the morning tho must admit.
Family shower and space would be a great addition. As my 1 year old did not take to the cold shower in the gents facilities.
No baby changing was avaliable on site which could of helped.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park. You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
