  • On-site clubhouse with restaurant, bar, games and entertainment
Devon or Cornwall? Cornwall or Devon? It is, of course, one of life’s dilemmas… but thankfully one that’s easily sorted with a stay at Chapmanswell Caravan Park, a Devon holiday park that’s close to the border with Cornwall and in a most handy spot for getting out to enjoy the spoils of both counties. This park five minutes drive from the village of St Giles on the Heath ticks all sorts of boxes for all sorts of holidays: it’s a family-friendly and dog-friendly place, handily close to the A30 (five miles away) for travels and days out, and with some splendid views over the Tamar Valley and Dartmoor. Even with all that on offer, there’s a highlight still to come – and that’s the site’s own clubhouse, The Anglers Rest, with a bar and grill that’s open all week, hosting live entertainment weekly in high season and fortnightly in the low season. The restaurant serves up reasonably priced food, including homemade fries and pies (opening times vary in and out of high season, with music continuing until 11pm in the summer). There’s also a pool table, dartboard, fruit machines and a dance floor to keep the good times rolling. Ice creams, sweets, alcohol and assorted essentials can be picked up at the site shop (they’ve even got doggy ice cream to get four-legged family members in on the holiday vibes…) Other facilities on site include a covered play area and a dog exercise area, along with a coin-operated launderette, a washing-up area and chemical disposal point. The bathroom facilities have baby changing facilities and central heating plus separate male, female and disabled shower areas. Reception is open seven days a week, and the owners live on site so you can always get hold of someone if you need anything.

What customers say

This is a friendly, family-run campsite with clean facilities, spacious pitches, and a welcoming atmosphere. The on-site pub and clubhouse are popular for their good food, reasonable prices, and entertainment. While the location is noted as rural with limited nearby shops, many guests appreciated the overall experience and the efforts of the staff to ensure a pleasant stay. Some minor issues were raised regarding shower noise and occasional Wi-Fi availability.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Family run business, staff very friendly and helpful.
All facilities clean and well kept.
Very rural, no shops or pubs nearby but they do have a little shop onsite if you need anything.
A clubhouse is on site and they do offer food and drink at affordable prices.

Disliked Could do with more shower facilities.
Only one shower available to use in the ladies as the other one was out of use. I’m sure this is only a temporary issue.
WiFi only available in the clubhouse not on your plot. This would be handy if you have a firestick so you can watch tv from your camper/caravan.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Yes the ladies shower was being fixed by the maintenance team. The diabled wet room is available for anyone to use and when we are busy we commission the outside shower block.

Excellent site with good facilities.Food homecooked to high standard.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked The pitch we were allocated was perfect, next to the park which both my boys loved & close to the club house too!
Such a friendly family who run this camp which made you feel so welcome!

Disliked The only dislike I can say about this park is the showers is close to the pub area so when showing before bed you have to go either through the pub itself or past everyone in the beer garden area.

Liked Staff was very polite and pleasant. The pitch was level and good for the size and tent. The bar and pool table was nicely decorated and bathrooms was clean. The travel to Devon and Cornwall close by beaches wasn't to far out.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The toilet and shower facilities were lovely, always clean and really warm. A fairly powerful shower and hot water.
Even though the kitchen wasn't officially open when we arrived after a 5.5hr drive the lady in the kitchen cooked us some dirty fries and sausage and chips, that was really appreciated. Food was a reasonable price too. The owner was very nice and accommodating to help us out.

Disliked The bar was VERY noisy and this continued until much later than advertised from the signs around the place. Lots of signage saying to be quiet after 10pm, bad language won't be tolerated, no kids in the play park after 9pm but none of this was enforced. I fully appreciate that the owners can't do much about people swearing on their way back to their tents etc but these seemed liked regulars.

Not being able to have a fire pit was also a downside and would have been nice, even if it was a communal one to sit around and enjoy.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Apologies for the noise. it is difficult to control customers language altough we do try to remind them that there are children in the club. We have asked Bar Staff to remind Customer to respect other Campers and to leave the Clubhouse quietly.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Check in at reception straight forward and clearly numbered pitches that were easy to locate.

Spacious flat pitch with more than enough room for our large drive away awning.

Toilet /shower blocks basic but cleaned regularly with hot showers and large cubicles.

Laundrette onsite which I found convenient.

No issues with noise in the evening so slept well.

Ideal location to explore the area.

Disliked Downside to toilet / shower block is that it is located at the rear of the clubhouse and also used by customers of the pub. A bit awkward walking past the customers outside drinking when you are heading for a shower. Also be prepared for your shower to be disturbed by screaming teenagers using the pub. Toilet paper run out on several occasions too so made sure to take our own just in case.

Clubhouse staff very friendly but overall didn't feel very welcoming due to a minority of customers which I can only presume are family or static caravan owners. Using the pool table was almost impossible and if you did get a change it was met with frostiness. A group of teenagers throwing cans and beer mats in the clubhouse one afternoon too which could be intimidating for some. After the second attempt, we didn't bother going again which was a shame.

Local attractions

The only issue with staying close to the Devon/Cornwall border is the possibility of being overwhelmed by options for days out… so perhaps it’s sensible to start somewhat local with a visit to Launceston Castle (10 minutes’ drive) or a day of meeting cute creatures at the Tamar Otter & Wildlife Centre (15 minutes)? Alternatively, of course, you could set forth straight away for the seaside – there’s so much fab coastline around here but you’ll likely find some of the highlights to be the beaches and surf schools of Bude (25 minutes) and Widemouth Bay (half an hour). If you’re more into strolling along cobbled lanes, the fishing villages of Boscastle (the one with the witches museum) and Port Isaac (the one where they filmed Doc Martin) are both within a 45-minute drive. Other coastal spots to check out include Tintagel Castle (40 minutes), a place of much Arthurian legend, and the maritime city of Plymouth (55 minutes), home to the UK’s largest aquarium and a stonking gin distillery.
