Chapmanswell Caravan Park: Clubhouse and covered play area

General

  • Dog- and family-friendly park on the Devon/Cornwall border
  • A 25-minute drive to Bude and 40 minutes to Tintagel Castle
  • On-site clubhouse with restaurant, bar, games and entertainment

Devon or Cornwall? Cornwall or Devon? It is, of course, one of life’s dilemmas… but thankfully one that’s easily sorted with a stay at Chapmanswell Caravan Park, a Devon holiday park that’s close to the border with Cornwall and in a most handy spot for getting out to enjoy the spoils of both counties.

This park five minutes drive from the village of St Giles on the Heath ticks all sorts of boxes for all sorts of holidays: it’s a family-friendly and dog-friendly place, handily close to the A30 (five miles away) for travels and days out, and with some splendid views over the Tamar Valley and Dartmoor.

Even with all that on offer, there’s a highlight still to come – and that’s the site’s own clubhouse, The Anglers Rest, with a bar and grill that’s open all week and weekly live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays during peak season (generally from 7pm to 10.30pm). The kitchen serves up top-notch food and there’s also a pool table, dartboard, fruit machines and a dance floor to keep the good times rolling. Ice creams, sweets, alcohol and assorted essentials can be picked up at the site shop (they’ve even got doggy ice cream to get four-legged family members in on the holiday vibes…)

Other facilities on site include a covered play area and a dog exercise area, along with a coin-operated launderette, a washing-up area and chemical disposal point. The bathroom facilities have baby changing facilities and central heating plus separate male, female and disabled shower areas. Reception is open seven days a week, and the owners live on site so you can always get hold of someone if you need anything.

    Good size pitches.
Management was very helpful and friendly.
Location was convenient for Bude (although it was more like 30/35 minutes drive, than 25 minutes advertised).
Food from the bar was good quality and reasonably priced.
Handy having the shop on site, although it shut very early.

    Disliked:

There isn’t anywhere near enough facilities for the amount of tent pitches. There were 3 female showers, 3 male showers and 1 disabled shower. It meant that several times there was a queue for a shower, which wasn’t ideal.
Although the park was nice, the management didn’t enforce the under age 9 rule (as per the sign outside) so in the evening it was full of teenagers unsupervised who wouldn’t allow the younger children on it.
It states that quiet time was 10pm onwards but this also wasn’t enforced, so several nights you could hear screaming and shouting well past 11pm.

    Really nice site. Lovely staff.
    Clean for a camping site.

    Disliked:

Electric seemed a little doggy covered in a black bag and all run off each other.
Electric pitches very small and close together, which we didn’t mind but it’s good to know.
Great site for older children, 7 years up. Because of the noise of the entrainment. And people drinking.
Food a little expensive for what come out. Looked like a microwave carbonara for £10,95
Kids meals £6 - great size
Adult meal £10.95 - rip off, same size as a kids meal and the only difference was grated cheese, not cheap sliced cheese. And a very small pot of coleslaw.

I would stay away, but when our two year old is older. It’s didn’t go quiet until 12/1am

Local attractions

The only issue with staying close to the Devon/Cornwall border is the possibility of being overwhelmed by options for days out… so perhaps it’s sensible to start somewhat local with a visit to Launceston Castle (10 minutes’ drive) or a day of meeting cute creatures at the Tamar Otter & Wildlife Centre (15 minutes)?

Alternatively, of course, you could set forth straight away for the seaside – there’s so much fab coastline around here but you’ll likely find some of the highlights to be the beaches and surf schools of Bude (25 minutes) and Widemouth Bay (half an hour). If you’re more into strolling along cobbled lanes, the fishing villages of Boscastle (the one with the witches museum) and Port Isaac (the one where they filmed Doc Martin) are both within a 45-minute drive.

Other coastal spots to check out include Tintagel Castle (40 minutes), a place of much Arthurian legend, and the maritime city of Plymouth (55 minutes), home to the UK’s largest aquarium and a stonking gin distillery.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (28.9 kilometres)
  • Tintagel Castle (30.6 kilometres)
  • Castle Drogo (36.8 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Lawrence House (8.7 kilometres)
  • Lydford Gorge (17.7 kilometres)
