  • On-site clubhouse with restaurant, bar, games and entertainment
Devon or Cornwall? Cornwall or Devon? It is, of course, one of life’s dilemmas… but thankfully one that’s easily sorted with a stay at Chapmanswell Caravan Park, a Devon holiday park that’s close to the border with Cornwall and in a most handy spot for getting out to enjoy the spoils of both counties. This park five minutes drive from the village of St Giles on the Heath ticks all sorts of boxes for all sorts of holidays: it’s a family-friendly and dog-friendly place, handily close to the A30 (five miles away) for travels and days out, and with some splendid views over the Tamar Valley and Dartmoor. Even with all that on offer, there’s a highlight still to come – and that’s the site’s own clubhouse, The Anglers Rest, with a bar and grill that’s open all week, hosting live entertainment weekly in high season and fortnightly in the low season. The restaurant serves up reasonably priced food, including homemade fries and pies (opening times vary in and out of high season, with music continuing until 11pm in the summer). There’s also a pool table, dartboard, fruit machines and a dance floor to keep the good times rolling. Ice creams, sweets, alcohol and assorted essentials can be picked up at the site shop (they’ve even got doggy ice cream to get four-legged family members in on the holiday vibes…) Other facilities on site include a covered play area and a dog exercise area, along with a coin-operated launderette, a washing-up area and chemical disposal point. The bathroom facilities have baby changing facilities and central heating plus separate male, female and disabled shower areas. Reception is open seven days a week, and the owners live on site so you can always get hold of someone if you need anything.

Guests love the friendly vibe and owners! It’s a great value, family and dog-friendly site with clean facilities and hot showers. The clubhouse, food, and entertainment are hits. Some mention clubhouse noise, dated amenities, or minor water/toilet paper issues.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback.

We are genuinely sorry to hear that your arrival experience did not meet your expectations and that you decided not to stay with us.

On the day of your arrival, you arrived earlier than the allocated check in time, and due to the high occupancy levels, this caused some confusion with the allocated pitch, as the previous guest was still packing up to leave within the allotted time frame.

Whilst there was some confusion regarding your pitch, we were available to assist and would have welcomed the opportunity to address any concerns you may have had.

Unfortunately, no concerns regarding the condition of the park, your pitch, or the behaviour of other guests were raised with the Management team before your departure. Had these issues been brought to our attention, we would have done our utmost to find a suitable resolution.

Chapmanswell is a mixed park that accommodates, Touring, camping and seasonal owners, many of whom have been part our community for many years, with both touring and camping guests returning year after year to enjoy the park facilities.

We are sorry if you felt uncomfortable with other holiday guests looking at you during your visit, as creating a welcoming environment for all guests is extremely important to us.

We regret that you chose to leave before giving us the opportunity to resolve your concerns and experience the facilities and surroundings that many of our guests return to enjoy year after year.

We do wish you well with your future travels.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Really friendly, easy going site, we especially appreciated being able to choose our pitch to suit our needs.
The facilities were good, clean and had everything needed. Decent showers and the option to use the kettle, toaster, microwave and air fryer was a nice touch.
Location was fairly remote, but central enough to make getting out and about exploring easy.
The clubhouse has a nice, proper old school vibe, food and drink seemed pretty reasonable price wise, the pizza we had was perfect, almost wish we hadn't brought our own catering to have tried more.
The dogs appreciated having the field available for walks and it was nice to stop and chat with others walking their pups too.

Disliked There were unfortunately a few times during our stay when some older children/teens were screaming and shouting at each other late into the night being a bit disruptive. Naturally not a lot the site owners can do about that, but it was really the only thing to be less than ideal, other than perhaps the scorching weather making tent life a little uncomfortable at times!

Liked Lovely friendly site. Fab clubhouse with pool tables and reasonable priced food and drinks. Clean toilets and showers. Potwash room was clean with fridge, microwave, air fryer and toaster, ideal for those camping.

Disliked Not a fan of shower curtain. Could also do with a mop and bucket so you could give the floor a quick clean after use. You would need transport to be able to get out and about from Campsite as it was away from everything.

Liked Flat and level pitches, we was near a hedge row so had a lot of shelter from wind. The shower and toilets was one of the best we have been too! Showers was red hot and stayed hot. And had god pressure too! Shop on site and washing machines to. The pot wash station was good, well lite and plenty of space. Really good dark field for star watching.

Local attractions

The only issue with staying close to the Devon/Cornwall border is the possibility of being overwhelmed by options for days out… so perhaps it’s sensible to start somewhat local with a visit to Launceston Castle (10 minutes’ drive) or a day of meeting cute creatures at the Tamar Otter & Wildlife Centre (15 minutes)? Alternatively, of course, you could set forth straight away for the seaside – there’s so much fab coastline around here but you’ll likely find some of the highlights to be the beaches and surf schools of Bude (25 minutes) and Widemouth Bay (half an hour). If you’re more into strolling along cobbled lanes, the fishing villages of Boscastle (the one with the witches museum) and Port Isaac (the one where they filmed Doc Martin) are both within a 45-minute drive. Other coastal spots to check out include Tintagel Castle (40 minutes), a place of much Arthurian legend, and the maritime city of Plymouth (55 minutes), home to the UK’s largest aquarium and a stonking gin distillery.
