  • On-site clubhouse with restaurant, bar, games and entertainment
Devon or Cornwall? Cornwall or Devon? It is, of course, one of life’s dilemmas… but thankfully one that’s easily sorted with a stay at Chapmanswell Caravan Park, a Devon holiday park that’s close to the border with Cornwall and in a most handy spot for getting out to enjoy the spoils of both counties. This park five minutes drive from the village of St Giles on the Heath ticks all sorts of boxes for all sorts of holidays: it’s a family-friendly and dog-friendly place, handily close to the A30 (five miles away) for travels and days out, and with some splendid views over the Tamar Valley and Dartmoor. Even with all that on offer, there’s a highlight still to come – and that’s the site’s own clubhouse, The Anglers Rest, with a bar and grill that’s open all week, hosting live entertainment weekly in high season and fortnightly in the low season. The restaurant serves up reasonably priced food, including homemade fries and pies (opening times vary in and out of high season, with music continuing until 11pm in the summer). There’s also a pool table, dartboard, fruit machines and a dance floor to keep the good times rolling. Ice creams, sweets, alcohol and assorted essentials can be picked up at the site shop (they’ve even got doggy ice cream to get four-legged family members in on the holiday vibes…) Other facilities on site include a covered play area and a dog exercise area, along with a coin-operated launderette, a washing-up area and chemical disposal point. The bathroom facilities have baby changing facilities and central heating plus separate male, female and disabled shower areas. Reception is open seven days a week, and the owners live on site so you can always get hold of someone if you need anything.

What customers say

A top family-run spot with generous sites & tidy amenities. The club house serves up good grub & entertainment, and the staff get rave reviews for being so helpful. Mostly peaceful, though some folks have heard the odd late-night din. Wi-Fi's a bit dodgy, and some bits look a tad old.

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked Pitch was good and level, daytime lovely and peaceful site. If you want the ability to drink through to the early hours then it was a superb site

Disliked Pitch was close to bar, evenings the local area came in for drinking and got extremely noisy, first night until 3 am. Had to get through large amount of drinking people to get to showers and toilets, some wouldn't move.

Liked Pitch was level and spacious

Owners and staff were super friendly and helpful with recommendations of the area.
Lady behind the bar and her daughter in the shop were also extremely friendly.

Disliked Toilets and showers need updating, and the pot wash area felt a bit grubby.

Club house is very locals only vibe, parties going on until 1-2am all weekend despite rules saying no noise after 10pm so we left a day early due to not sleeping very well unfortunately.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. We’re pleased you found your pitch spacious and level, and particularly pleased to hear your lovely comments about our owners and staff being friendly and helpful.
We’re sorry that some aspects of your stay weren’t to your liking. We do take comments regarding our facilities and cleanliness seriously and will review the points you have raised.
We would, however, like to clarify the comment regarding “parties going on until 1–2am all weekend.” During your stay, one of our holiday caravan owners was celebrating his 60th birthday. This was a special occasion which we explained to guests at the time, and the celebration was open and welcoming to everyone on the park. It was not a private “locals only” event, nor is late-night partying a normal occurrence every weekend.
The Anglers Rest is our on-site clubhouse and is open to holidaymakers, caravan owners and local visitors alike. The bar closes at 12.00am.
In addition, our pot wash facilities are cleaned once a day. We do ask that all users clean up after themselves following use, as the facilities are provided as a shared privilege for all guests to enjoy.
We work hard to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
Thank you again for your feedback and we wish you and your family all the best.

Liked Nice spacious site; dog friendly; clean and modern facilities; very welcoming family-run business. And the Angler’s Arms is a lot of fun with very good food and selection of drinks. Great place to stay. Really enjoyed ourselves here.

Disliked Nothing.

Liked The only thing I liked was the entrance in and out

Disliked Club house have discos every Friday & Sat Night with the music blaring until very late
Then when it's kicking out time you have to put up with sound of drunks continuing there partying till early hours !
The owners do not seem bothered and are only bothered about how much electricity you are using if Camping

Dog Shit in Camping field as everyone is walking there dogs in there and not picking it up even husband of owner
And yet it's not a dog walking area
Little kids haven't play here not very nice for them !!

Toilet and Showers are too far away for campers to get to as they are located at the back of the Clubhouse! Not very safe in the middle of the night and you have a mile walk just to want a wee

Disliked Food was extremely greasy

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback.

We are pleased to hear that you found our toilet and shower facilities very clean, as our team works hard to maintain a high standard throughout the park.

We are sorry to hear that you found your food greasy and that it wasn't to your taste. We always welcome constructive feedback and will pass on your comments to the relevant team.

With regards to entertainment for children, Chapmanswell is a family-friendly touring and camping park, rather than a large holiday resort, and we do not advertise an extensive children's entertainment programme. We do however, provide facilities for children to enjoy, along with plenty of outdoor space.

We appreciate that our park will not suit everyone, particularly guests looking for the larger Holiday park vibe, with children's entertainment and extensive play facilities.
We always try to represent Chapmanswell accurately so that guests can choose the type of holiday that best suits their family.

Thankyou again for your comments, and we wish you well with your future travels.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Very clean showers and toilets. I asked for a pitch near to amenities and staff were very helpful.

Disliked The clubhouse still had music thumping out at 11.30pm on a Sunday night.
A resident dog barked incessantly until early hours sometimes, but I was close to the area.
Shower had hot water one day, not the next. The third day was lukewarm.
Pot wash, no hot water.
Shop wasn’t open at the hours advertised.
I didn’t have time to waste chasing it up as I was only there a few days and managed.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked As Sub contractors working up and down the country finding a campsite near to where we are working is always handy. Paula and her team were very friendly and welcoming. As self employed guys the cost of digs comes straight out of our pockets so keeping costs minimal is important so being summer we chose to pitch up a couple of tents for 4nights. The facilities were brilliant, hot showers and toilets accessible 24hours a day, a great clubhouse which opened at around 3pm every day (summertime) which gave us a place to have a nice few beers and food at good pub prices and some respite from the heat of the day! (Avg 32degrees this week) a few of the guys we met live on the site and everyone is so friendly and welcoming, even stuck the footie on the TV for me a couple of nights so I didn't miss the games lol.
Being able to charge our phones, connect to WiFi and use our work laptop in the clubhouse is a definite bonus aswell as having pool tables and fruit machines. There is a launderette and shop on site and facilities for sending and receiving parcels, and there is also a room with a microwave, air fryer, kettle, sink and fridge/freezer you can also use aswell. If we are down Launceston way again we will definitely be staying again.
Thanks for making us feel welcome.

Local attractions

The only issue with staying close to the Devon/Cornwall border is the possibility of being overwhelmed by options for days out… so perhaps it’s sensible to start somewhat local with a visit to Launceston Castle (10 minutes’ drive) or a day of meeting cute creatures at the Tamar Otter & Wildlife Centre (15 minutes)? Alternatively, of course, you could set forth straight away for the seaside – there’s so much fab coastline around here but you’ll likely find some of the highlights to be the beaches and surf schools of Bude (25 minutes) and Widemouth Bay (half an hour). If you’re more into strolling along cobbled lanes, the fishing villages of Boscastle (the one with the witches museum) and Port Isaac (the one where they filmed Doc Martin) are both within a 45-minute drive. Other coastal spots to check out include Tintagel Castle (40 minutes), a place of much Arthurian legend, and the maritime city of Plymouth (55 minutes), home to the UK’s largest aquarium and a stonking gin distillery.
